i had some hands on with ME3's mattock at gamescom. personaly... i think the Mattock was a much better gun in ME2. hopefully you can mod it so its like ME2.
in ME2 the mattock could fire as fast as you could pull the trigger. in ME3 there is a limit. in ME2 i could easily manage 5 shots per second (roughly estimated) in ME3 i barely managed 3.

seems better to me (the less shots per second thing), make the gun feel more like a semi-auto rifle where every shot counts instead of something that might as well be full auto, kinda what the point of the gun was when they made it

Thank god, now the actual full auto rifles might see the light of day! Honestly the Mattock made the ME2 soldier increadibly boring and its drawback of "low ammo" was not much of a drawback. It was fun for a few minutes, but was not much like its description of a slow accurate rifle.

yeah I do like the mattock but unlike the other weapons of the firepower pack, it failed to accomplish what it was supposed to do as part of that DLC, you know be a valid, fun alternative of playstyle compared to other weapons not something that rendered other in-game options (like the vindicator) completely obsolete and objectively inferior.

I think I will roll with assault rifles, sniper, n shotguns for most of my playthroughs...especially since I'll be playing classes that can carry more than 2 weapons at a time( vanguard, infiltrator, n soldier).

Because I like providing my own cover(ing fire) with an automatic weapon, be it assault rifle or SMG, before I hit X to pull out my shotgun and Y to give someone a colonoscopy, Vanguard style.

It's all a matter of personal preference.
Then again I'm not a shotgun person. Those zombies scare the hell out of me that I can't really think to retaliate. -_-;;

BioWare needs to change the shotgun mechanics and make SMG's behave like something other than the poor man's Assault Rifle for them to be chosen.

You might want to start with making shotguns have an effective range of more than ten feet, for starters. You know, like in real life.

Also the pistols in ME2 were only useful if you were out of ammo with your main weapon. In ME1, they could be levelled up to have no recoil, very high accuracy, and ludicrous fire rate, making them hand held assault rifles.

I'm an avowed Infiltrator fanboy thanks to the second game.

Were it not for the Widow sniper rifle, I would have picked up the Assault rifle. You can have the submachine gun (as much as it was useful, it wasn't as reliable as a machine gun), Assault Rifle+Sniper Rifle, or hell, Battle Rifle+Sniper Rifle is an excellent combo. Mind you, most of the time I was running around with the pistol busting caps in mercs with a dazzling combo of tech and biotic powers from myself and teammates, which was very efficient since the pistol was incredibly reliable.

For the sniper naysayers, there is nothing more gratifying than picking off your targets from afar, one by one with headshots. Just awesome.

I might use the pistols more, since they all can have laser sights.

I'm still inclined to think that rushing into someone's face, blasting them in the gut with a shotgun, followed by beating their skull out of their head, and then beating them to death with said skull is much more gratifying than sittign back and OSOKing fools with a Sniper rifle.

But that's just me. Either way, the guy's dead, it's just  a matter of personal preference. And style.

The fact that any class can wield any weapon just seems silly to me. What would be the point in using anything other than an Assaut Rifle and a Sniper?

Because having SR isn't the end all/be all. My loadout consists of the Geth Shot, Locust/Mattock and the Carnifex. Why would I want to have my Vanguard stand back and go 'plink plink' with a SR when I've got a shogun?

I always used handgun in every ME title so far the most. Sniper came second and assault rifle I never used.

Accuracy over spray and pray any day.

I'm one of those who always wanted to be a vanguard with an assault rifle, but never really got to be 'good' at it becuase of the game restrictions. ME1 allowed us to make an AR vanguard in a 'new game plus' if you had played a soldier before, but the vanguard's skills were very much designed to boost shotgun damage, so I never played a vanguard in ME1. In ME2 I continued as my soldier from ME1, but as soon as I realized that I could get assault-rifle training at the Collectoor ship I decided to re-import and redo my Shep into a vanguard for my second play-through. Again, I missed out on the unique Revenant and Claymore by doing this, but at least I could have my 'conceptually perfect' Shepard now.

Finally in ME3 I can now have my assault rifle vanguard without any penalties or restrictions, and I couldn't be happier about it. The skills and powers of each class are still unique enought to create varying play-styles, and at least now Commander Shepard, seasoned vetaran marine officer, knows how to use an assault rifle no matter what class he is. Feels right to me and kind of makes more sense in my opinion.

Actually it took a while but I actually got the Assault rifle achievement on my Adept playthrough because I had all the weapons and didn't really put points into pistols to speak of anyway.  So you don't have to play a soldier in ME1 to unlock the achievement.  It's just easier to do on a soldier.

Ah, got you. Too lazy to look up what the actual requirements were for that achievements, but I think I remember it being a certain amounts of kills with the assault rifle? Which then yeah, would make it a whole lot easier with a Soldier than any other class. But yeah, it's certainly do-able with any class.

Yes. it was just a certain number of kills. Granted it took me most of the game because I had Wrex with me and more than any other character he's always been one to steal my kills when the enemy has that last little slice of health and I need to cool down my weapon a little. But it is doable. I might have gotten it faster without Wrex in the party though.

I play Adept, so I had to use assault rifles for suppressive fire while my powers recharged. I am going to be dangerous with a shotgun though, especially if I can find a way to mod it to remove shields. Followup with pistols or AR to drain armor and watch them fly with my biotics! Woo!
