No weapon-type restrictions? Check
...
Revenant+Claymore+Widow on one single character with biotic charge? You decide.

If opening up weapon options means more players choose classes other than soldier, than I imagine Bioware can live with certain weapon types being much more popular than others.
Very true. specially with as many on BSN seem to think that something having protections means there is nothing they can do but shoot it anyway so they need to play a soldier...

Well, the way protections and ammo powers work does tend to favor the soldier. That said, I suppose that many players who are drawn to a game with shooter-style combat simply want to be able to use all the weapons.
Making them available to everyone is an easy way to add flexibility and perhaps increase the popularity of the other classes with virtually no additional investment of resources. So, it makes sense.
As a developer, you are spending all this time designing a bunch of different classes and meanwhile 80% (or whatever) of players are using only one class. That's not very efficient, so Bioware has got to be hoping to improve this.

May I ask which mods you have installed in aforementioned Claymore to make it so awesome?
A barrel mod (increased damage) and a new mod that I probably shouldn't talk about just yet... but it's not really what you might think of as standard, and it works very well against groups of enemies.
It's a hard choice though, since there's also a really nice melee upgrade you can get...
Is the "new mod" a grenade launcher? Come on, you can tell me.

That's because shotguns don't mesh well with the typical Soldier playstyle. Shotguns, apart from the Claymore, don't perform well under the effects of Adrenaline Rush. I would argue that the Mattock + Widow combination is the most efficient for the Soldier. For other classes, though, shotguns are probably a better choice, depending on your playstyle.
Vanguards need shotguns for obvious reasons, at least if they want to capitalize on Charge.
Infiltrators are deadly at all ranges. The GPS works very well in their hands in close combat.
Sentinels are most effective in close combat with their Tech Armor blasting all over, so shotguns are a solid choice.
Engineers and Adepts can hit enemies faster with their powers in close combat without having to worry about long flight times.

I have always said that a thanix cannon that uses krogans as ammo is the only way to beat the reapers.
All we need is Anti-Reapers. Then they annihilate with the Reapers and we get a nice lightshow.
But back on track now:
I don't think a grenade-launcher mod is available, ... how would you fire it when you don't have an alternate-firing button to start with?

Ex. For my money the Locust is better than the Avenger (more accurate and better stopping power) and the Vindicator (sucks at cqc), but when you throw in the Mattock... it totally kills the need for an smg or a pistol.
Weapon choices however open the possibility of an offensive infiltrator, that gets behind enemy lines instead of sniping. The engineer seems like a class particularly good for sniper rifles, but an accurate shotgun can do the job too. No point that i can see in adding sniper rifles to the adept, vanguard or the sentinel.

Shotguns work great for certain playstyles, the assault rifle kicks ass for everyone, the sniper rifle has a solid role. But pistols are kind of crappy sniper rifles and the SMG is like a crappy assault rifle.

I think the real question is are they going to give us a game balance reason to use the SMG and pistol?

The Locust has a higher base damage than any of the assault rifles except Vindicator, Revenant and the Mattock, and you can't get both the Revenant and the Locust, and maybe not all players are fans of the Mattock, and the Vindicator lacks the lasting ammo capcity.
The Predator pistol can also do more total damage than the Mantis, so it might be a nice alternative to sniper rifles for some.
I do think there should be more options in the different weapon classes, though.

pistols are all going to hit harder, and since you can put lasers on all of them (so I've heard) you basically can make any pistol the hax sniper rifle the Phalanx is.
Can't wait for my N7 pistol
