If there a generally good person and worth more to society than me, than I'd like to think I'd make the sacrifice. I'd also like to think the rest of humanity is smart enough to put others before themselves.

I actually agree.

If this other person is a researcher at MIT working on a cure for cancer, I'd kill myself.

But I still don't think this is an applicable parallel for our situation.

The Hegemony isn't worth bo-diddly. Did you play Arrival? Most batarians went bye-bye, they are in no position to fight us even if you ignored the fact that given our new role as the galaxy's saviours we would have the support of the asari, turians, solarians and just about every Citadel species. They wouldn't stand a chance.

300,000 died in Arrival. Less than a million, and they were a colony. The Hegemony couldn't fight an Alliance at full strength, but they could fight 15-20 million, which 2-3% are actually in the military. And about Council support? That didn't stop quick slave raids before. Just bring bigger ships to hold on until the civvies are aboard, and hold them hostage until you are out of system.

That analogy doesn't work on so many levels.
Of course I'd want to save myself but thats not what we're talking about.  The analogy only works if your outside the room and the guy from Saw makes you chose.  Press the red button and Dog poison kills off every dog alive.  Or press the blue button killing every cat alive.  Its not self perservation to kill off an entire species just to save the one you like more.

I thought the fact that the Hegemony didn't come after Shep (to our knowledge) just showed that they don't give a **** about their colonies.

It was a Hegemony colonial system, right?

Ok here's my 2 cents.

Species preservation is meaningless, because it is just about life and death sickle. If every human on earth decided not to have kids, that would be ok, it would be a choice of the living. What really matters is ones life here and now.

So I wouldn't care about the life of those who do not yet live, but rather care about those that live NOW, so my choice would be based on the numbers of lives that I could save, and species would not play a role in my decision.

No one species is any "better" than any other, this thread's purpose is little different than the one about which order we'd prefer to save each species in. It's unfortunate that the social commentary devolves so quickly into "you must hate humans if you're pro-alien" or "You must hate aliens if you're pro-human". We're talking about the survival of entire civilisations here, there's no room for moral ambiguity. The best you can do is judge each species merits based on their past actions.. the Council species have all done more for the galactic community than the non-Council species, that's why they are on the Council.

Humans and asari are both on the Council now, they are equals in terms of galactic influence. If you had to choose one or the other, shouldn't you pick the one you know is fully capable of rebuilding after the Reaper War and working with the other remaining species over the one who is more interested in using the Reaper War as a chance to dominate the others? The asari specialise in diplomacy and biotics, they are more interested in compassion and working with the other species (and biologically, they need the others as well so it is in their best interest to not do anything to endanger their relationship with the others).

Humans.. humans are harder to figure out, even though we are human, we are not living in the 22nd century during a Reaper War.. you can hardly compare today's real human beings to the Mass Effect variety because the perspectives and situations are completely different. The asari live for thousands of years, they can mate with anyone and they promote peace over violence whenever possible whereas humans are more intersted in protecting their own interests first and will maybe think about helping others later. It's a real toss up to decide which is more deserving of salvation, humans are certainly more adaptable and would be more useful post-war to rebuild but the asari are well-loved already whereas the others are only beginning to understand (let alone trust) humankind.

But to choose the asari does not mean someone hates their own kind at all. I'm not sure why these arguments always turn into black and white extremes, the situation is simply not that clear-cut.

Children born of an asari essentially aren't even yours. They have nearly nothing to do with you. Their "relation" to you is more coincidence than anything. Especially with asari... haha.

Betray one's own race.. live as essentially a waste of genetic material.. raise "children" that you can never be sure are yours... and die like a dog.  Your "children" will forget you soon and very soon for your partner's next suitor. They'll essentially have never known you, whether you were a saint or a demon. What are the positives of saving asari again?
