No, it's not semantics.  Genocide has only applied to humans because humans are the only sapient species most people recognize today.  Nothing about the words "ethnic group," "nationality," or "religion" are human exclusive.  If we were to find another sapient species, killing them for being that species would be genocide.

I don't care one bit about Cerberus. You can do what you want with Cerberus, but there will always be humans who remember that their blood is red. Talented, resourceful, determined humans who do not secretly dream that they were born with a different set of organs, but will do their uttermost to ensure the security and prosperity of their own people, including you.

This is the same as telling, I want the prosperity of my own people, the caucacian, or the african or the asian race. Is selfish. You need to prospere as a whole not as a divided entity.

Of course, there are also those who don't want dominance, but rather simply equality.  Hence why I'm opposed to  destroying any race or their homeworld.

I would, however, like to replace the Council with an assembly where every race is represented more equally.

Alternatively, is it 'patriotic' to the degree of actually being a humanitarian, or are they selfish too because they're looking out for 'humanity'?

In context of ME, the dividing line between species still remains far more imutable than the cultural dividing lines between human nations. Human nations can assimilate and breed into each other if their cultures become compatible. It is impossible to fully assimilate into another species, regardless of cultural similarities.

But that is what happened. When my Sheploo was bumping nasties with Tali she was screaming out "Thank TIM!" as she climaxed.
