Alternatively, is it 'patriotic' to the degree of actually being a humanitarian, or are they selfish too because they're looking out for 'humanity'?

Is not the same, but I understand your point. If you want the prosperity of your species at the cost of someone, if you don't care about what other species think of it, you are selfish.

Self-interest is what keeps species alive. Without it, the only possibility is extinction.

Im not going to change the dictionary, but now you know that when I say race I mean ethnicity.

In context of ME, the dividing line between species still remains far more imutable than the cultural dividing lines between human nations. Human nations can assimilate and breed into each other if their cultures become compatible. It is impossible to fully assimilate into another species, regardless of cultural similarities.

Uhmmm... yes interesting, but... you understand what I wrote? There is no need to assimilate, different cultures can live together. In mutual peace and cooperation,

I can give an example of self-interest making a species extinct, does that count?

Also he wont be able to give you an example, because species look out for themselves, that's kind of how it works.

Example?

USSR, Communist China, Cuba, Tibet, North Korea.

Now, these are not true examples of an absense of self interest, because I cannot think of any that lasted long enough to be noticed, but they are examples of the rusults of a culture that suppresses self-interest as evil.

The USSR killed more of their own people than any other in history that I am aware of, excluding Communist China, which is going to have severe demographic problems because of the 1-child policy.

Cuba and North Korea have practically no economy, military, or political clout.

Tibet fell to China and has been brutally oppressed since. At least part of their fall to the Chinese is due to their buhdist philosophy of non-aggression, resulting in no feasable military.

The fact that no species evolves sucessfully to have altruistic instincts also speaks volumes for the value of self-interest in terms of survival. Absolutely every species on earth is self interested, without exception.

Yes, you don't go running through a bunch of tigers. But something is looking after you for safety, which could be not running through the buch of tigers. The other is looking after you for safety and using others to run through the buch of tigers.

Hehe I keep repeating it.

Goverments aren`t examples, they are institutions not species. A few people who just looks after them is selfish and the irony is that those goverments where that.

Governments represent nations. The species in ME are nations. I see no difference.

Nation-states are the closest analogue we have to inter-species relationships. They control designated territory and have distinct cultures. The fact that ME nations are also completely different species lends weight to my point that self-interest is necessary for survival, because assimilation through breeding is not possible.

Renegade much? So in the middle of a intergalactic invasion in an impossible war you want to sacrifice the founders of intergalactic diplomacy, so humans can corner the market on eezo? This is a true dummy move, you have to figure your going to need the resources either during or after the war is over, and if you let Thessia be destroyed then nobody reaps the benefits.

Self interest is ok, I told you that xD As long you don't prejudice somebody or you intervene with the liberty of others is ok. When that self interest turns to being selfish is when the problem appears, such as allowing a whole species to go extinct just because it doesn`t involves your "interest" or your species "interests"

Well, I didn't work out very well for Carthage!
.
But I agree. My goal is to weaken most of the galaxy before the war is over so humanity can easily take over afterward.
