OK, I have to admit it, I am a sucker for Allistair and am having a hard time imagining a new playthrough without him now when I plan to do a second one. But I want to try to romance Zevran or even Leliana all to the end for once. However much I try I still end up with romancing allistair...
So my question is this: Is their a line, or choice of reply fairly early on that kind of cuts of the romancing opportunities with Allistair but still keeps him in a good mood. Kind of keeping him as a cross between a BFF and a big brother? Just like when you talk to Leliana very early on about liking women.
Allistair as a big brother

I think there's a line when you give him the necklace where if you're flipant he'll not flirt with you. Luckily the gifts can rectify just about anything though so you can not talk to him and give him all his gifts and you should still have an extremely high approval rating.
It's very hard not to flirt with Alistair but Zevran is totally worth it. I still prefer Alistair but Zev is great too and well worth the effort of trying to resist Alistair.

I don't understand really - I'm romancing Zevran and I didn't tell Alistair he was handsome, and he's on CARE. Was it the "line" thing I talked to him about that made him interested?

The "Just try that line on me" branch? There is a Romance trigger in one of dialogue options in that convo. Pretty much anything even remotely flirty will set Alistair off - to not romance him, you have to keep things strictly friendly and business-like.

The notes on characters bars for your relationship should not be used as a referance. You can have characters like Sten and Ohgren on Love to your Warden.
Just dont flirt with him and if he asks for more let him down. To me the dialog lines are obvious and easy to avoid but then again there was that guy who raged about being gay with a elf that he never flirted with ever, or so he claims.

Thanks for the replies.
I guess I'll just have to let Alistair down gently and not flirt with him again.

Of course, if you want to avoid having to let Al down easy, you could always play through with a male character -- both Leliana and Zev will romance a male and Alistair won't. So you'll get to say whatever you like to him without worry, and be good friends and all that. I quite enjoyed the Zev romance, actually.
(Cough. You're friends unless you let Logain live, like I did. No friendship after that, no sir.)

I have seen Leliana's character bar go blank once when I flirted with her in one of the first or second conversations, before she was at Warm.
