How what why?!

After keeping myself pure Fenris and my female mage finally consumated their love woohoo, then he got all ARGHHHHHHHH about memories coming back and not sure if he could handle them.
Act III and I find it's all over :crying: but when I had a chance to fall into Anders arms (sigh) in the Justice quest, I didn't because I didn't know, he told Aveline when we were on the coast.

What can I do to keep him next time?

If you choose the option "So you're ending it" after the Fenris/Hawke romance scene, it ends the relationship for good, even though it doesn't have a broken heart symbol attached to it. I chose this option in my very first PT and scratched my head in Act 3 because I never got any followup quests after "Alone".

I don't know. I pick that option everytime and it doesn't end it. "So your just going to leave?" and he leaves. But act 3 you can get back together just fine.

Don't initiate another romance and should be able to get with fenris in act 3.

Sometimes I sleep with isabela which prevents fenris romance, despite not taking isabelas romance anywhere.

Yes, sleeping with anyone will stop his romance in its tracks.

Maybe it was fixed in a recent patch. All I know is I'm not the only one who has had this happen, as the Dragon Age Wiki even has a note about it on Fenris' page:

Note: There appears to be a bug with the dialogue wheel during the conversation. When Fenris leaves and the final dialogue wheel appears for Hawke, the option 'So you're ending it.' appears to have the effect of ending the romance, even though it doesn't have a 'Reject' icon. Fenris will still wear a red ribbon and companions may still make comments suggesting a continued romance, but the corresponding scenes and dialogues in Act 3 will not occur.

Yes I've heard of this. Maybe it was a console bug? I never got this and never patched until recently when I had too for legacy. Who knows?

I know a few times long ago people thought they could back with Fenris after sleeping and dumping other Li's but it doesn't work that way.

1. Avoid sleeping with other people. Anders and Merrill will instanty and forever-lee turn off Fenris' romance. He isn't down with the Abomnination/Blood Mage sloppy seconds, yo. Isabela on occasion can -also- break the relationship, but its buggy and doesn't always happen. If you want to sleep with both, do Isabela's bit FIRST (as in, don't even talk to Fenris or do any of his quests in act 2 till you've finished with Bela), and then go do Fenris' stuff.

2. Make sure you do his questioning beliefs in act 2 BEFORE his act 2 quests. Technically you don't need to, but I find it keeps him from bugging out. This means making sure you have him at 50% friendship or rivalry before you do "A Bitter Pill". If you need an extra nudge, make sure you pick up his act 2 gift in the alienage at night. It's not terribly difficult to do. I can push his rivalry up past 50% before the end of Act 1 simply by being pro-mage and defending mage!hawke/sibling/anders/merrill. Similarly you can also be pro-mage and get his friendship up by being anti-slavery and meta-gaming by not bringing him along on anything that might give him excess rivalry (pro-mage stufffffff)

3. When he leaves at the end of the fade-to-black in act 2, don't hit the "So you're ending it" option, and don't hit the heartbreak option. Both of these will break off your relationship.

Good luck and happy Fenris luvvins!

hmmm got an up to date patch on PC, I have reject all others from the very beginning, told Isabella no thanks, done all his quests, avoided taking him on pro mage quests etc if I talk to him his automated response is that he'll follow me anywhere, said in a very meaningful way

oh well - thanks guys

I'll romance him again but maybe not as a mage, my perverse nature wanted that to work
I love (and married) deep dark broody tortured souls, my heart's tugged every time I look at Anders :crying: but I need to add another to my list

If you told Isabela no thanks, then she came to your house. Go back to a save before you flirted with her. THIS is what's breaking the relationship. Isabela is buggy and Fenris is touchy ;p Just go back, pick the -its not a flirt- option (The diplomatic answer for friendship, she'll tell you you're makig her insides squishy when you tell her she's your friend ;p) and that'll avoid breaking the Fenris romance.

Yeah Isabela can screw up the romance if it is initiated after Fenris' romance is already up. If you want to do the Isabela, Anders, Fenris trinity you HAVE to do it in a specific order or it will break the romance with Fenris.

Isabela is first... you can have fun sexy times and break it off. This must be done BEFORE initiating the romance with Fenris in Act 2 via his QB and Hadrianna quest. At least that is what I have found. If you do anything with Isabela afterwards it seems to F' up everything. You can flirt with Anders afterwards but you have to kick him out and not sleep with him to keep Fenris.

That being said I have seen a couple of other people post about the "WTF my romance is done broke in Act 3!" and even the final QB for Fenris is broken for a couple of people I've seen. I'm doing another playthrough and have NEVER had a problem romancing Fenris (both rival and friend). I have chosen the "so your ending it" one multiple times without it going wonky so I'm wondering if there is some new bug. I haven't romanced him since before Legacy so maybe there is something new *shrug*

I'm investigating it either way, but lately I keep seeing more Fenris related "it's broken!" posts. Hmmm....

I currently have the same bug.  I'm getting all the in-love ambient dialog, but he's not acting like he's in love with my Hawke.  And I'm on the 360.  And I never got his Act 3 questioning beliefs, though I'm about to get the sword, so that might still change.

He was my "The ONE" on 6 different playthroughs. I know... I likely have a problem. So that's why I'm not understanding how it is getting messed up.

I play on PC and have him maxed one way or the other by at longest middle of act 2. As stated though I'm going to try this playthrough and see what happens. I'll do the "so your ending it" thing... if that breaks it then I'll know. If the QB quest doesn't pop for whatever reason then I'll also know that there is a bug because I won't do anything really different than my other romances.

If there is something going on we need to compile data to let the devs know about it.

my THE ONE is Anders, but intend to romance everyone I can (except Aveline, don't want to screw her and Donnic up) and that means an awful lot of playing the one game this year!

You can't really romance Aveline anyways... just flirt with her. It goes over her head and it breaks her marriage with Donnic, yeah. My boyfriend did it one PT not knowing she wasn't a romance option, and then he is like.. "Well that sucks. I'm a freakin' homewrecker." I lol'ed.

LOL well I certainly won't do that, there's enough angst in the game outwith that

The best advice I can give you deary, is make sure, sure, sure not to save over other saves. When you save, make it a new save every time. This way, if something doesn't go your way, or something muddles up the works, you can go back to a previous save.

The catch 22 with Fenris is that he's insecure, so if you sleep with anyone else after you sleep with him, he'll ignore you forever. On top of which if Isabela comes to your house, after you've slept with him, even if you turn her away, he'll knooowww and it wont continue your relationship.

In fact the only one who can show up at your house, and you can tell them no thanks, is Anders. He'll specifically ask you if you're done with Fenris.. while insulting him -_-, and all you have to do is tell him you still love Fenris. This will keep Fen, and send Anders packing ;p

One of these days I'll write it all down in a blog, and when someone asks, I'll just link it :innocent:

Arquen and I should consipire :bandit:

Heiden I think that is a wonderful idea.. we should TOTALLY conspire to write a guide, LMAO.

Unfortunately I never write anything down so my "guide" is in my head. I'm already to far into this playthrough to remember all the rivalry/friend points that I made and what nots. Plus I was deviating from my system a little on this one because i'm going with sarcastic/aggressive hawke and totally trolling Fenris even though I'm friending him, muahaha. I loves it!
