and that kiss before the final battle - isn't that how all the romances should go?

Yes. Not fair a certain mage character doesn't. Broke my Hawke's heart. :crying:

mine too, I wanted to kiss him so badly, tell him everything was OK and I'd stand by him forever

One little kiss. Was that too much of a crumb to throw to those that romanced Anders? That last bit made me want to b***hslap Justice more than ever. <_<

Yes.

Seriously though, I was bummed out when I got to the end with my Andersmance and he basically was more happy about getting the Circle to rebel and knowing that mages in the future would be able to love without Templars in the way, than having Hawke's love and support. I was starting to feel like the only reason he got into a relationship with Hawke was so that she would help push his agenda, like he used her instead of loved her. :crying:

And of course, Rivalmancing and siding with the Templars may net you a kiss, but Anders is totally broken and is probably going to get executed.

I don't think Bioware knows what "happy ending" means. :P

Happy endings are passé apparently. I think bittersweet is as far as they are willing to go now. ;)

if they read through these they'll know their customers are fans of the tortured soul

Wasn't the end of Origins happy? Alistair either marries you, or takes you as common law wife as opposed to arranged marriage with Queen ****

Neither one of those options was available if your Warden wasn't human.  Waa!

I'm actually itching to finally play Origins with a human Warden, just so I can sample this happy ending thing.  My first playthrough was dwarf, second was elf (who romanced Zev, precisely because of the non-happy endings available with Alistair).

Back on topic.  I hate when Fenris starts up with his 3-years worth of relationship issues.  But you know, maybe he was expecting our Hawkes to pull an Alistair on him--elf-racism is a big thing in Thedas!  [Boy howdy, when you play an elf Warden, they never let you forget it, either.  Dwarves get a lot more respect.  When a dwarf warden sasses back, people are like "ooo, what's it like to live underground?  Are you afraid of the sky?", but when an elf warden sasses back, they're all "uppity elf, fetch me a mint julep!".

I actually hadn't considered that angle as concerns Fenris' reaction before!  I think perhaps the reason it came to mind (besides this thread) is that I did have my umpteenth Hawke finally have a relationship with Merril, and they did talk about it.  Fenris could have been too afraid to bring it up, or too certain that Hawke would pull an Alistair ("now that I'm a Hightowner, I couldn't possibly be in an open relationship with an elf--what would people think?  I need them to respect me").  Fenris was afraid of being used for his smoldering hot moody (s)elfhood.

I became Alistair's official bit on the side as an elf ... he's not racist the blasted system is.

I'm currently playing through Origins not to have a happy ending, a male mage .. the happy ending will be a Christmas present for me

I love the two brooding options in DA2, you either go for the downtrodden mage or the downtrodden slave.
both so hot ! And am so glad Fenris came through in the end.

I guess that the first time, as a dwarf, I hadn't "hardened" him, so he was all--"children!  I will need to have some and it would not be fair to them!" or something.  Ah, unspoiled playthroughs--what a bummer!  And the second time, as an elf, I dumped A. in favor of Z.  As paypack I guess.  Ah, metagaming--how vindictive!

[Sidenote: in my elf playthrough, when I told A. to do the dang dark ritual, he was all "nuh-uh", and I was surprised.]

I know A. isn't racist.  I tend to hyperbolize.  It's fun!

I did like when, as a dwarf, he said "I was worried that you thought I was too tall", or something.

Back to Fenris: I like him so much, I haven't been able to rival him yet, with any Hawke, LI or not.  He's the only one who feels like they actually have a real--and revealing--conversation with you.  He paces, he sits down, he leans in, he leans back, he takes a swig, he gestures, he's conspiratory, he laughs at your jokes.  Anders was my first LI on my first DA ][ playthrough, so I love/hate him, but I nevertheless feel that his convos with him primarily have a facial gamut exactly two: amazement and disgust, except for after "want a sandwich?" (which is the same face as after "kittens and virgins") and "if you hadn't been here . . . " (in Dissent).  [Though I think my favorite moment of his is the "Trash, trash, keep, trash" scene intro.]  His disgusted face really is excellent.  It's crazy how many times he's wearing it even while interacting with his LI.  It's really creepy, actually.  Fenris, though, with his puppy dog eyes, and his tough guy face which morphs so incredibly to tender hurt, openness, regret, acceptance--phew!

1. Happy Endings are borring as **** ;p Anders gets no happy ending, because he wasn't built to have one. Friend-Anders is Janders - the cause of mages. Rival-Anders is Broken Anders, the Abomination. No Happy Endings! If you want a happy ending, Stick with Fenris :P

2.The reason Friend-Anders doesn't kiss Hawke is because he's emotionally no longer Anders at that point. If you've friended him, you chose the path he wanted to walk willingly. Its not that he doesn't love Hawke, its that he's on a high for having the thing he's been working at for the last 7 years actually come to pass -- proof that the system doesn't work, that change is needed, and that he was right. A friendmance Hawke who sides with the circle, and lets him live, is saying exactly that, at least in his mind. On top of which he's had a smooth transition from Anders-And-Justice into Janders, thanks to Hawke's support. Thus, by this point in the game, a Full-Friended Andersmance is a Janders-mance. And Justice has never been big on open displays of affection.

a Rivaled Anders kisses Hawke if they side with the templars, but its a goodbye kiss, because he can-not-forgive himself for chosing to work with Hawke in the end. Its the ultimate betrayal to his cause. He loves Hawke enough to try and do right by her(or him) but does not plan on living after its all said and done. Suiside is heavily-handely hinted.

And.. that's your daily dose of Anders!

Ohhh, I know, I'm not knocking the Andersmance. That was just my initial reaction when I finished my first Anders Friendmance, now that I've played DA2 about 20 times, I get it.

And I don't always need a happy ending. :P I just don't want a "total downer" ending.

Agreed. I'm not asking for rainbows and riding off into the sunset either, just something less than completely hellish. I think Bioware manages a pretty deft blend of the two. ;)

Dunno about that. If you've friendmanced Anders and sail off together with Isabela, there's a chance you'll have a happy ending at some point, but you're going to have to grab it in between missions. Of course, if you both believe in what you're doing, that's happiness, of a sort.

Alistair is very shy, he wants this romance to be The One and you have to ask him again later on .. he's very open, if you're nice to him he'll fall head over heels and then the sweet nights begin.

I'm back in Origins now, free from the angst of slave trading and blowing up the chantry, but I am playing as an elf mage with an anti-chantry slant.
Will never be able to take on Fenris's anti-mage beef, but will chop the heads off any slavers I meet. still thinking of that kiss before battle
