The problem as I see it, however, is that a large number of Japanese games simply don't do a whole lot to improve upon their standard formulas. Some might not see that as a bad thing, perhaps - and yet, in many newer JRPGs I try to play, I still get plagued by a dozen random battles while simply trying to walk to the next area, sucking the immersion right out of the game (in addition to irritating me to no end). I'm also still forced to grind and grind... and grind, just so I can have a fighting chance against that boss on the next screen.
There are also games like Resident Evil (which I still love, despite what I'm getting ready to say about them) - that series has stagnated for years now. Tank-like controls and fixed camera positions don't lend themselves to smooth gameplay. Only when Resident Evil 4 came out did they finally start to improve upon the formula - and even then, there were still some irritating, archaic gameplay elements lingering on (some of which they still did little to improve upon in RE5, I might add).
There are a number of other major game franchises and genres besides those that stagnate. I already mentioned Zelda in passing - very little has been done to enhance the Zelda experience since Ocarina of Time (which just got a disappointing remake). Pokemon,
That's not to say some Western games don't do the same thing. A number of Western developers fail to do anything significantly innovative or interesting with their franchises. A new Call of Duty game gets released at frequent intervals - and yet, I can barely tell one release apart from the other. They're like Madden games in that regard - once you've bought one, you may as well have bought them all. In fact, that's true of just about every Western FPS title that gets released these days.
Of course, all of that means little to me in the end. I still play all of the games I just listed (except for Call of Duty and Madden). I only wish that the developers would step outside of convention a bit and do something to spice up the storylines and gameplay in these games.
