Shepard accepted appointment as a Spectre, and thus agreed to uphold the safety of the galaxy.

Needs of the many outweight the needs of the few.

Under the premise that what is good for the Galaxy is also good for humans.

And the needs of your species outweigh the needs of your ego. There are very few people who spout off this kind of rhetoric that who would actually put another person's needs ahead of their own. Those that do typically die in poverty.

What's with all these Thessia threads? Did I miss something?

Some people have been feeling genocidal lately this time they want to decimate the asari.

To be fair, the thread was about the Reapers that woudl decimate the asari.

I'd rather decimate the reapers

Would you not rather totally eradicate the Reapers?

I'm all for military plans involving blowing up the Reapers however I generally feel that the systematic destruction of only 10% of an enemy force whose sole intent is to wipe out all life in the galaxy is probably not going to promote the survival of mankind and all other life forms.

Ok yeah eradicate is a better word but I think you know my intent.

The needs of one species outweigh the needs of no other.

I'm sure that sounded epic in your head...

Except it's not you.

It's Commander Shepard.

A person who has sworn oaths to the Alliance, oaths which have never been revoked or nullified by any other agency.

So if Commander Shepard lets the Alliance die for the sake of the greater galaxy... then yes, Commander Shepard (Systems Alliance: you know, where the 'commander' comes from) is the greatest betrayer in the history of mankind and possibly the galaxy.

The Council reinstated Shepards Spectre status, but we are no longer part of the Alliance in ME2 (Anderson wants to reinstate Shepard back into the Alliance at the beginning of Mass Effect 3).

How about showing some interest in your own survival, then?

Genocide is unnecessary here.

My survival is only necessary insofar as it benefits the galaxy. I'm willing to both kill and die to save it.

How so? You gambled with hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of lives, just to save one life.

So why the asari favoritism? If all you care about is lives, which is the case with your desire to always save the asari before anyone else, then you shouldn't care about diversity. Thus you should have quickly eliminated the rachni queen.

Be consistent, Xilizhra.

The choice was between one life or zero. Between the plea of one living being and centuries-old historical records based on circumstances that said being did in part explain, I saw no reason for killing.

That is not the sign of a person with a healthy level of self-value.

So it would be healthier to survive at the cost of the galaxy? If I fail, I'll die anyway.

No, the choice was between one life or possibly countless lives.

Xilizhra, if you are going to be a Spectre you need to start considering potential consequences. You need look beyond what is right in front of you and try to see how your choices might impact the future.

Xilizhra wrote...

You saw no reason to kill her? Oh, well no wonder you made such a dumb choice then. Let me help you out with that.

The reasons to kill the queen are as follows:

The rachni, even naked, are highly lethal creatures capable of surviving hostile environments. All by themselves without the benefit of technology they managed to break out of containment (on two separate occassions) and overwhelm armed security staff.

The rachni breed like rats. Worse, actually. In months they can have hundreds if not thousands of offspring. A single rachni queen could easily overrun a colony like Noveria or hide out in the galaxy and birth an army in only a a few years.

During the Rachni Wars a technological rachni population nearly managed to overwhelm the entire galaxy. They refused to negotiate, keeping their queens locked away on hostile worlds, deep below the ground. They were aggressive and utterly relentless.

Lastly, you have no reason to trust the queen. You can't trust the queen because she is acting under durress. She is at your mercy and she wants to live. Given the circumstances she will tell you whatever you want to hear if it means getting free. So you have no guarantee anything she says is the truth.

The indoctrination argument doesn't hold up because if the rachni were ever a Reaper proxy race then Sovereign would have known where the Mu relay was.

We are not talking about failure to save the galaxy, we are talking about acceptable costs for success. And, yes, wanting to save the galaxy in order to save yourself is a far healtier attitude, but it in itself does not make you a mentally healthy person. The willingness to sacrifice ones own for the other is simply an indicator of low self-value, while that low self-value is the actuall problem, likely with a source in one's past.

I am tempted to say I would pick the asari over humanity as well but that would be more to troll the human dominance crowd.  In reality if faced with that decision I would have to weight all the different variables.  It would not be an easy choice.

You would save a race of strippers over those of your own flesh and blood? ^_^

I feel like I have to say this, even if you sacrifice earth, humanity is not be destroyed, humanity will live on in the humans across the galaxy, on the colonies and the citadel, humanity lives in the people not the planet.

edit: I know most of you have been joking around and having fun with this but I just felt like that had to be said.
