My party -- Me (DW Cunning-based Rogue), Alistair (Tank), Morrigan (ranged DPS), and Leliana (archer) -- have just arrived at the Party Camp for the first time.  We're all at Level 7.  Alistair has Shield Wall, Shield Cover, Shield Pummel, and Shield Bash and will not gain Threaten until Level 8 and Taunt until Level 10.  Morrigan does not yet have Cone of Cold.  Leliana recently joined and has better Archer than DW abilities, so I've been using her as Ranged DPS.

I want Alistair to run forward and battle the nearest mob for several turns in order to grab aggro.  I have the game set to Auto-Pause at the beginning of combat.  While the game is paused, I press H to hold the party in place.  I then take control of Alistair and right-click on the enemy I want him to attack.  Then I take control of my main (Rogue) so that, as soon as I have unpaused the game, I can move him into the best DPS situation (either backstabbing or Dirty Fighting/Backstabbing).

My PROBLEM is that even though Morrigan and Leliana hold their position, they begin attacking the enemy at range as soon as I unpause the game.  This means that their attacks hit the enemy before Alistair's attacks do, and as a result they draw aggro and the enemies run right by Alistair as he is running toward them.

The only SOLUTION that I can think of is, while the game is paused, to set Morrigan's  Combat Tactics to 1. "Enemy: Any --> Frost Weapons,"  2. Enemy: Any --> WAIT" and Leliana's CT to 1. "Enemy: Any --> Song of Valor,"  2. "Enemy: Any --> WAIT"  and save each of these as Custom 1. (I've never used "Wait," so I don't know whether it will work.)

Then when Alistair has run up to the mob and has battered it/them for a few turns (with my Rogue helping), enough time to draw and hopefully hold aggro, I can...

1. ... pause the game again and switch Morrigan's and Leliana's Combat Tactics to what I have set up for them to usually use, which is Leliana using Rapid Fire and Morrigan switching between Winter Frost and Lightning, both aiming at the mob that Alistair is fighting.  And

2... then press H again to free everybody up to move as their CTactics instruct them.  And

3... then UNpause the game.

If you have ideas about how to handle this more efficiently, please let me know.

I plan to replace Leliana with Wynne asap and then keep this as my regular party (Rogue, Alistair, Morrigan, and Wynne).  We have just finished Lothering and are about to do the Broken Circle quest next.

Try giving Morrigan and Leliana melee weapons (probably an iron dagger for Morrigan) and setting those as their alternate weapon sets. From the pause menu you should be able to switch quickly and easily between the two weapon sets on your characters, so you can simply equip their melee weapons at the start of combat and switch over to their main weapons when you want them to start attacking.

Aggro will get way easier to manage once Alistair picks up Taunt, and I'd recommend going for that before Threaten. Use it in the middle of a mob and it won't matter who started attacking first.

Your thinking about this way too much.

This is not something like a MMO, you dont need a tank at all.

Ive played the game perfectly fine on Nightmare mode with all rogues or mages, or even dps warriors.

@WJC3688 -- Thanks for the advice! I'll try it out.

@ Last Darkness -- Intriguing comment. I've been playing MMOs ever since they came out and thus have ingrained in my mind the combat strategy used in that type of game. Am not quite sure how else to play. Will have to learn as I go along. Anyway, thanks for your comments, which I always enjoy because I can see that they are based on what appears to be a great deal of experience in playing DAO.

I don't think you want to set your tactics to "wait" -- as I understand it, you cycle through the tactics in order, over and over as the combat progresses. It might cause M & L to randomly pause during battle.

I play on easy combat levels (as I'm more into the roleplay aspects), but I think Last Darkness is not off base re: overthinking. The mobs may run past Alistair at first, but once he starts dealing out the damage, especially a bit later when he's got Threaten, he should be able to draw enough of the aggro.

Thanks, I dont mean to come off as offensive when i say things though lol
Im just very blunt.

Theres the holy trinity Tank/Healer/DPS that people get locked into and I blame MMOs.
As ive said you can do perfectly fine without a Tank in this game, you can also do good with one as well as the entire birth of the Tank Archetype is to simplify the combat and focus of a encounter. I have other problems with its growing misconceptions(I hate how people think Tank=Hard to kill instead of massive party support and Malice managment)

In Dragon Age theres a number of ways to tank and they are not all needed but it does help.
You can tank perfectly fine with any of the warriors even the archer. its all about threat managment.
You can also tank with a Arcane Warrior and a Shapeshifter mage and to a lesser degree a combat rogue.

Your simply over thinking it a bit, to Tank all you need to do is deal damage and manage your taunts on your Warrior though. In Dragon Age its actualy more effective to focus more on DPS to tank then taunts.
Warriors have a sustainable talent called "Threaten" which doubles the malice they get from dealing damage.
Combined with say the Reavers AOE Damage Aura and other AOE talents you should have no problems casualy holding the attention of groups of enemies.

Some Examples for Tanking Gear Focus
Two-Hand Warrior = Focus on Dodge and Spell Immunity from gear.
Duel-Wield Warrior = Go Duel Daggers and pump Dex and watch for Spell Immune Gear.
Weapon and Shield = DPS build, go for Dodge/Spell Immune Gear as Desired.
Archer = Dex build go for Spell Immune gear.

Shapeshifter = Either Focus 100% on magic or Str/magic.  100% on magic is good for SS/AW specs.
Arcane Warrior = Plenty of In depth guides on this already.

But like I said they are not needed, Rogue can chain stun or combat stealth. Mages can heal and other options.
4 Warriors with 1 maxing Herbalism to make healing items worked well as well.(all dps specs)
Matter of Fact
3 mages + Shale in Stone Aura/Rock barrage forms worked GREAT
3 Rogues as rangers with pets and a pure shapeshifter morrigan worked great. (3 little and 1 big spider in party is creepy)

my problem is my "melee" guys "gas out" from lack of stamina; both from abilities and heavy ass armor.

cant wait to get the group regenerate (stamina gain) spell. i have the individual spell. hard to cast offensive and defensive spells all at once w/o lyrium potions though.

i do have some blood magic abilites that help regain mana, thank goodness.
they cost life though. ;p

there are abilities and modes like threaten and taunt that might help draw some of the aggro your casters will attract.

You could have your Warrior use a knockdown talent when you mage gets attacked in melee.

Jadejim, you can use gear that gives you bounus to willpower and/or stamina,or stamina regen.

You can set their tactics to defensive or passive instead of default. That might help.

As for party composition, there have been some good discussions of alternative parties here.

Watch the aggro on your dps (especially your dps warriors) and build a threat set if it's getting to be an issue, a mix of tank and damage dealing gear always seems to help. Pausing every few seconds helps too (As an old school BG player I tend to pause between every action)

I find its best to have your tank be your highest dps at times lol
