Alright, this has been tingling me for a while but I really need to say it:
Does anyone else feel something's odd with the ME3 trailers??
What do we learn from the trailers?
- ME3 will open on Earth, during Shepard's trial.
- The Reapers invade Earth during that trial.
- Shepard will be fighting Cerberus agents at some point.
- The Normandy has been claimed and enhanced by the Alliance and is now under the authority of the new Council Spectre.
- Ash/Kaidan is humanity's new Council Spectre.
Now what's odd with that?
First of all, Arrival was a DLC, not everyone bought the DLCs. An optional "quest" merged into the main story-line?
Secondly, why would Cerberus attack Shepard while he's trying to save Humanity from the Reapers?
Finally, a guddamn © massive Reaper fleet invades Earth.
Regarding Arrival, I assume there will be some kind of introduction summarizing the DLC like "After dealing with the Collectors, Shepard destroyed an entire batarian system under the threat of an imminent Reaper invasion, an event that could lead to a war between the already hostile batarians and the Alliance", yet it sounds like a huge shortcut and to me, although a scene with Hackett and Shepard explaining themselves in the court might be more elegant, providing more details for those who didn't get the DLC, but still a huge shortcut. But basically, this event is somewhat forced into the storyline.
Now the Reaper invasion. I have a really hard time figuring how such a massive fleet could reach Earth with such stealth that nobody thought about getting Shepard out of the ongoing trial with such an imminent threat that he's the only one knowing enough to deal with. It's a bit like:
"- oh look on the radar, a massive unknown fleet is heading our way, do you think we should report it? looks like Reapers (nota: no matter the ending of ME2, data regarding the Reapers was collected, as shown on the datapad on the final scene).
- Ah yes, 'Reapers' we've discarded that, must be a bunch of Geth, send a patrol to wipe them out and return to your station, I've got better things to do than dealing with fictious sapient machines. *returns to his minesweeper game*
Some time later...
- Uh, I think the Geth landed on Earth and have begun anihilating everything, the patrol stopped responding when they reached the fleet.
- Damn, how did those silly Geth manage to do that?"
Well, it might be a little bit far-fetched, but it seems the Reapers have some more entry doors to the Milky Way than the Citadel and the "Alpha" relay. But alright, let's go for that, though, how is it that with Collectors under their control, able to visit all mapped systems, thus able to classify wich system isn't practical for an invasion and wich is, that they didn't fall back to that plan when the Citadel option failed but instead wasted time harvesting humans with the collectors and reaching for the "Alpha" relay? I mean, if my major plan failed such as the Citadel, I would immediately fall back to a sure way to invade the galaxy. Most Allied fleets were joining the battle of the Citadel, leaving less forces available to defend the other systems and yet suffering heavy damages from a single Reaper and a few Geth dropships. An invasion at that time would have provided a huge surprise allowing victory somewhat effortlessly, and would have provided all the time in the world to harvest all needed species, no? OK there's a need for some story to build 3 games, but it still sounds rather odd for synthetico-organic sapient machines like the Reapers, to be so easily detected three times before using a efficient stealth way of invading. Not to mention that Shepard got killed within a few weeks after the battle of the Citadel and two years passed before he got back on track. Quite a lot of time to switch plans.
Anyway, let's say the Reapers needed two years to be able to use this "Alpha" relay and let's say, two more years to reach another relay that allowed them to get close enough from Earth to launch a surprise attack.
So here we are, Shepard is in audience during his trial or in custody between sessions when chaos begins, with Reapers err.. Geth pouring from the sky and all defenses overwhelmed. Somehow, Anderson manages to release him and provides him a gun to make their way out and find a place where the Normandy can haul them out of here. Oddly enough, the Reapers didn't bother sending just a handful of theirs to chase the Normandy, but well, it's not like the Normandy had any major impact on their invasion plan, isn't it... wait... it did... *facepalms*.
Anyway, now that Joker hauled Shepard and Anderson asses' of Earth, and thankfully the Reapers didn't bother hunting the Normandy, they have the urgent mission to save Earth, and the galaxy, from a terrible ass-whooping. BUT... to unite the galaxy, they have to rally all species, so our Shepard Commander is off to plead his/her cause to all major species, encountering some resistance when:
- meeting batarians, because even if they're about to be anihilated by the Reapers just like any other species, they just can't allow themselves to unite with the man who destroyed one of their colony;
- encountering Cerberus, because despite his leit-motiv of ensuring Humanity's advancement and survival, TIM didn't swallow the fact that the Alliance got their hands on his toy (aka Normandy SR-2 with onboard EDI), and he's sure he can handle the Reaper threat on his own;
It is possible that I lack some informations, I only played ME1 and ME2 with all DLC, no other extra book or game, but the storyline looks quite dodgy to me and, this is my feeling about what ME3 will look like, it appears Shepard will have to locate TIM and get rid of the Cerberus hassle, gather allies to launch a massive counter-attack on the Reapers before he somewhat finds one sure way of anihilating them all in a single last-minute strike he won't return.
Some speculations on what can happen next...
The whole galaxy will celebrate the Hero who died to save them all.
The batarans will drop the threat of war with Humanity when the Alliance informs them that Shepard sacrificed himself to save the galaxy, the criminal who destroyed one of their colonies is dead, good riddance.
All species will lick their wounds, collecting and studying the reapers in their systems meanwhile.
The turians will slowly convince the Reapers never existed and it was just evolved Geth.
Council species will agree upon the only way to get rid of any possible endoctrination from dead Reapers, by hauling all derelict Reapers into brown dwarves or such, but each thought it too much of an opportunity to study such an advanced technology that they kept some. Eventually, studies of the Reapers will lead to all species in the galaxy to become Reapers (endoctrination, reproducing of technology and so on) who will return to dark space and wait for life to find its way back on the various systems before they return to repeat the cycle after fixing the Citadel relay. Paragon ending.
-or-
Council species will agree upon the only way to get rid of any possible endoctrination from dead Reapers, by hauling all derelict Reapers into brown dwarves or such, but each thought it too much of an opportunity to study such an advanced technology that they kept some. Societies will evolve greatly, benefiting from the Reaper technology, until the krogans, secretly breeding incredible amounts of pure krogans, led war against the salarians, then continued with all other species because it was just too awesome to blow things up accross the whole galaxy. Renegade ending.
