I've mainly seen BioWare marketing refer to him as iconic not canon.hitorihanzo wrote...
@Dronewhatever: incorrect. The canon Shepard is a white male modeled after Mark Vanderloo. That's not an opinion, that's a fact.
Would you be interested in a full Cinematic FemShep Trailer too?

This is true. He is the marketing face and icon of the franchise, he is not, however, in any way linked to the canon experienced by the player.

Funny, in all expanded universe material, written by BioWare employees, Shepard is referred to as male. Every, single time.
They said it themselves that they felt it would be best to pick a face to associate with the franchise.
I think maleShep fits best, but there truly isn't a canon shep.

She has no place in my Mass Effect. Default male has been the designated marketing Shep since the beginning. He is my Shep and the public's Shep. I don't understand why they think all of a sudden for the third game that I will want femShep to be thrown on my Collector's edition. She wasn't on the previous ones, so why do I need to look at her now?
He's not my Shep. Why only focus on the ones playing maleShep? I mainly play as femShep and I'm thrilled they're finally shining some light on her to.
He's not my Shep either even though my Shep's a dude.
This is my Shep.
Frankly though I want ingame trailer. I want to see more of the game. Not some CGI.

Anyway, on topic, I would love a full, cinematic femshep trailer. Yes please! BioWare make it happen.

Question: why do you need to feel acknowledged? Honest question. I don't understand it on a psychological level, the need to be acknowledged by a group of people you don't know.
Who doesn't want to be acknowledged as a paying customer and a fan? Surely you enjoy having your preferences catered to?
Most games are tailored to and feature male characters. If the segment of players that enjoy having the choice of a female protagonist get recognition, then perhaps more games will begin to include the option of a female character. I've been forced to play male characters for many years. How many times have male gamers been forced to play as female? Not many.
The femshep trailer is essentially for us fans, many of whom are women. Who would BioWare be hurting to give us this cookie? Nobody. All the advertising still belongs to Sheploo.

Why do you need to see the 'face of the franchise' as only a male?

Yes, for the love of space monkeys, please give us the femshep trailer already. It would be a nice nod to the droves of femshep players who have barely been acknowledged until recently. Female gamers do exist, dammit.

Look at the female marines. They do not look like femshep 2.0 at all.

Feel even luckier they actually put time into it to make it good.
With all this luck we better not question it

I thought you would be. But she was absent, so it bothers me that they are breaking my images by adding some parallel universe version of my Shep on my game cover.
The public see's default male. The players see whichever they choose in game. I prefer that they stick to their marketing idea of having a face for the trilogy and have him stay as THE face. I don't want parallel universe femshep that never existed on my covers before, or in my playthroughs for that matter, suddenly in the final act being on my copy.
So what if she was absent on the other covers. If everyone thougt like you do, there'd be a million different covers, one for each players Shep, and that's unrealistic. And them "breaking your images" just because they're adding femShep to the marketing is just stupid. I'm sure you've been aware of the choise of a female Shepard for a long time now (like most of us others) and seeing her on the cover shouldn't change anything, unless you just want something to whine about that is.

@jlb524: Stupid question based off of an entirely emotional standpoint. I don't need to have the face of the franchise be male. IMO, one of the best protagonists of all time was Ellen Ripley from Aliens. The fact remains that the face of the franchise IS male. You shouldn't be catered too simply because you're female and have bought a video game.
Dude you can obviously speak freely, but seriously you should just stop while you're ahead. It's clear you can't see or understand the female perspective on this subject (because you aren't female) and you never will from your words so just stop. Your mind is closed, not one person has said anything about being "catered" because of their gender, yet your ignorant ass says stupid stuff like that.
I can't take you seriously.
