Anybody have any ideas what I'm doing wrong and also please tell me the game will get better?
Thanks.

Also, do you have the companions set to hold position--ie. did you toggle the hand symbol? If he has a melee weapon equipped, and isn't in range of his selected target, he won't be able to move to attack in hold position mode. Even if he has a ranged weapon equipped, he won't be able to attack if his view is obstructed. The tactics don't tend to work very well if the characters can't move freely. There are times when hold position is useful, but be prepared to be constantly pausing and giving characters orders if you choose to play that way.
As far as whether its more open world or doorways, it's a mixture of both. I think the game gets much better, primarily because the biggest strength of the game is the companion character interaction which you haven't seen that much of yet.

I'm new to the game and I'm only on the bit where I've got to light the tower during a battle involving the king. During the numerous fights in doorways (please tell me most of the game will be open world fighting) I'm attacking, the circle mage is attacking, even my pet is attacking, but Alister just stands there like a gimp even if he's being hit. I've fiddled with the tactics to make him attack a melee or ranged that is attacking me but he still just stands there. I thought the AI of squad members was supposed to be really good in this game but I have to say I am very dissapointed in this game so far.

There are all sorts of reasons why this can happen. Here are a few possibilities:
He is stunned or otherwise immobilized by an enemy.
He lacks sufficient stamina to do any of his set tactics.
The enemy he is set to attack has been killed and he needs to discover a new target.
He cannot plot a path to get where he wants to go.
etc., etc.
Doorways are notoriously bad for traffic jams. The simplest solution may be to open the door, select the entire party and move everyone backward (away from the door), wait for the enemy to come out and give chase, and then release the party to attack. If one character is not attacking, select that character and manually give the command to attack.
I have had a lot of fun playing with the tactics menu, so my opinion is that the game does get better. I prefer to use the custom tactics and I adjust tactics to match the talents and stamina level of each character. It took me a while to figure out how to do that, I will admit. When I have a spare tactics slot to use, I almost always set it this way:
On left side of menu: Enemy: Nearest Visible
On right side of menu: Attack
It is a simple command that seems to work quite well most of the time to get everyone fighting all the time.

"what do you need?"
"what do you want?" my dead dog has more personality than that. then when he does have something to say, its usually something crass. not the phenotypical templar idiom IMO.
seriously though, might need to change up your tactics, at least to default.
he's tough enough to take some damage from friendly fire. lol.
