I hadn't had a problem with my Mass Effect 2 game before I tried to install several DLCs including Kasumi, Zaeed, Shadowbroker, Cerberus Weapons, Normandy Crash Site, and Arc Caster.  I had tried removing all of these as well as some of these DLCs multiple times, but to no sucess.  What happens is that the game reaches the screen where it says 'Hit any key to continue' and, after I do so, it crashes to my desktop saying an error has occured.
I had read some material online that this was normally associated with out-of-date video hardware, but I doublechecked all my things and they seem to be up to date.

My system is:
Windows Vista 32 bit
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
3.5 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS

As I said, I hadn't had a problem before I tried installing the DLCs and even when I removed them, the game stil won't run.  I even tried reinstalling the game.  Please help?

The only thing that comes to mind is a badly corrupted save can do this (as can corrupted drivers and corrupted Direct3D files). Move all of the saves you held onto somewhere else for now and see if it will start with none of them in the saves folder. If it will, move one at a time back and retry until it fails again, and you'll know that the bad one is the very last you tried.

(I have jumped ahead, of course. If replacing drivers is easier for you, of course you may wish to try that first, and the same for Dx9.0c as well.)

Thank you, you seemed to have found the problem. Of course, now for starting all over again, but at least it works now.

The very first rule of PC gaming was "Save early, Save often". It's still valid.

There are a great many corollaries to it. including "Don't trust a Quicksave / Autosave if at all possible".

I really miss having Bogs on hand to enliven the forum.  He would have had an additional corollary for my comment here, but he seems to have ruffled some easily tickled feathers somewhere.

Did Bogs get tired of dealing with all the same questions again and again, or did he say something to get himself banned??

NOT Bogsy!!!  Say it ain't so.  Can I get a PM too?  I was about to go off in search for him in the dankest darkest dungeon I could find.  Definitely a lot quieter around here (and less smelly) without him.

OK. Done.
