Are they sequential? Or completely different stories?

I'd recommend getting both. Together, they make up a single story, including the ToB expansion as the final part.

They are sequential. You can import your character from the first game into the second, though there is a predefined cannon.

The first part is more difficult to get into, nowadays. But if you use mods (BGT / BG Tutu + BG1 NPC Project (+ bugfixing)), you should be alright.

Seconded.  These are high quality mods that legitimatly add to the experiance.

I prefer it unmodded, because Tutu can make it unbalanced a bit.
On modern PCs you have to apply some technical tweaks though to get it running.

A preference is a preference, but I don't think BGT/Tutu really makes it very unbalanced. Sure a couple of the BG2 classes have a somewhat easier time of it, but it's not really a big deal. BGT also really adds to the whole 'trilogy' feel. If you want to play the same character from BG1 to BG:ToB you also miss out on some class choices if you don't go with BGT/Tutu.

[side-note: there's the famous class choice you DO get with vanilla, but not on the BG2 engine -Tutu or BG Trilogy]: dualing classing to a specialist wizard: if you want your PC to be a Fighter dualed to Conjuror, for instance, start in vanilla]

It's a side-note because dual-classing ain't the way to go for a new player.

Best recommendation in my opinion is start a BG1 campaign vanilla style, to get an appreciation for what the original is like. Once you get tired of the game unpausing in your inventory and feeling around with the mouse for containers - as there's no TAB-highlighting - you can get a touch at playing a modded game and play Tutu+Beregost Fix+BG1 NPC1-project or BGTrilogy+NPC1-project.

Play BG1, then BG2, then BGT or TuTu (playing BG1 with the BG2 engine). Then maybe GemRB will be done, and you can play them all over again with the IWD2 rules or whatever. ;-)

I second Son of Imoen. I'm currently doing another play through unmodded. I'm not sure what the NPC "bug fixes" are (unless this is referring to Jaheira's romance, which is a bit wonky), but the game has always worked fine to me.

You may have a little trouble running it on a modern PC. I think I had to download a patch from the Gibberlings 3 site, along with the officials, and I still have some graphical problems with the edge of my fog of war, wyverns rendering weird, and eagles flying backwards. However, these are all really minor things in the context of the game.

So, in short, get both, and run through vanilla before messing with anything, if only to have the genuine experience. I highly recommend it.
