So yeah, turns out there is hardly any real advertising at all. I'm about 10 hours in and don't recall seeing any. All over the streets there are billboards and signs advertising fake products and companies, nothing real.

Call me crazy, but I think it's better than the original.

Who cares? Having real products in the game makes it feel more realistic, especially if it's in the near future or in current times. Of course having coke bill boards in a game like ME would look a bit out of place. (though not it's not entirely unlikely that coke will be around in 2186)

Regardless of what sort of advertising is present in the game, is the game any good?

Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time, and I'm currently of the opinion that DXHR is ****ing phenomenal. I love everything about it, but especially the art direction. The renaissance theme used for all the characters involved with human augmentation is brilliant. And the sepia-wash tone not only reinforces that, but reminds me of the old amber colored phosphor computer monitors...

I'm still early on in the game, and it could come apart later, I don't know, but it just feels right. The people that did this understand what Deus Ex was and is. It's Deus Ex's own renaissance, and I love it.

It's gotten 10s, 9s, and 8s across the board. Only three sites that I know of have given it an 8.

I've also been listening to alot of reviews on youtube (profesional and non-profesional) and the game sounds phenomenal.

Be ready for at least four different play throughs. The sheer number of options available is impressive. And all the augmentations actually seem useful.

So is this game everything it was hyped up to be? because it looks quite astonishing from the little bits I've seen. The only thing that holds me back is Square Enix being it's publisher, a company who's games I do NOT enjoy. But this game might be the one I can allow.

If you ignore boss battles, which had very crappy design, it is Deus Ex, only better.

I've never played Deus Ex before, but if I go off what reviewers and bloggers have said it's a very good game series, and from what I understand this is a prequel to the first Deus Ex, so I should have some understanding of the world. I'll probably end up buying it tomorrow then.

I've put 20 hours into the game in the last couple of days. It is incredible and completely does justice to the Deus Ex name. The in-game advertising is all fictional products from the future. There are no ads for modern day movies or brands. The closest true advertisement that I've seen was a billboard for Final Fantasy XXVII.

And I appreciate that, now I know Final Fantasy games will continue to be uninteresting to me far past my death.

I have no problem with advertising in games as long as it fits. THe only thing I find weird is the online updates. It has several problems. The far cry 2 story above is one example but I'd also say if DX cannot get a connection or whatever, than I guess the ads default back to the eidos billboards. I'd find it distracting and un-immersing if dozens of Eidos boards are lining the city.
IMO if they want to advertise in their games, that's fine but they should really make a decision of what fits, put it in and leave it at that. E.g. the prominent placement of Airways (chewing gums) in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Have to admit, they shoved that one in your face pretty hard but at least it wasn't changed every 30 minutes. IMO if they want to do it, they have to take great care to do it in a seamless and unobtrusive way.
