OK, so I'm trying to start a new game of Dragon Age: Origins, and it won't let me. It keeps telling me my "character limit has been reached" and I need to either delete a character or switch hard drives in order to create a new one. So, two things:
1. What sort of bull**** is this? I have played through Origins, Awakening, Golems of Amgarrak, and Witch Hunt twice (once as a mage, once as a human noble) and the Darkspawn Chronicles and Leliana's Song once. That's my limit, is it? I can play through a particular Warden's storyline twice and then I have to delete one of them? I have over 200 GB of free space on my Xbox hard drive here! Why do I have to delete a character in order to create a new one if I have the memory for both?
2. Let's say I want to delete one of these characters that I lovingly crafted over the course of several days of gameplay. How do I do it? I can find no button to push or option to select on my Dragon Age: Origins menu that would allow me to delete a saved game here.

1. The limit is coded. The situation is similar for PS3 owners and they have less options than us 360 owners. There is a get around if you have a spare HD as you can move your saves to an external drive. It's what I do but I originally had a paltry 20GB drive and upgraded. In short, it has nothing to do with the amount of space on your HDD.
2. You delete saves by going into the memory settings of your 360.

The limit is ten characters and 32 saves per character. It is not a Bioware thing, most (if not all) console games have similar limits.

If I delete a character who won a particular achievement (for example, "A Secret Stitched Together" for The Golems of Amgarrak), do I still get to keep the reward item I got for that achievement?

Yes. Achievements are associated with your Gamertag and not the actual save games. For example I obtained many achievements with my first Warden, but due to the same restriction you faced I had to delete him (I hadn't upgraded my HDD then), but the achievements I obtained with him are still recognized.
