I had forgotten that the game says the Templars left the Chantry to hunt the mages. Why would the Templars leave the Chantry? I thought the Chantry wanted to hunt mages, too.
Maybe the Chantry was not radical enough for them. Maybe it was undecisive due to internal divisions?
Dynamics that of course should have been explored in the game, but maybe the novel will explore them.

Follow on Twitter,
The chantry isn't able to call an Exalted March anymore without everyone else (including the Templars) falling over in gales of laughter.

Lol, i don't think their marches hold up to that much anymore as well. But still when you have a bunch of religious fear going around they could still rally up a pretty fierce army and support.

Phaonica, I've suspected for a while that lyrium may not be necessary at all for Templars to learn their skills (or at most, it helps, but not absolutely necessary) and that the Chantry obviously made them believe otherwise and basically turned them into drug addicts to control them (Alistair talks about this in DAO). Templars might have learned about this and that might have fueled their rebellion. Also, there's a DA novel coming out this year which explains how it happened, I think it's called Dragon Age Asunder.

I went back to the cutscene where this was mentioned.
Varric: So how is hearing all of this going to help? You've already lost all the Circles. In fact, haven't the Templars rebelled as well? I thought you decided to abandon the Chantry to hunt the mages.
Cassandra: Not all of us desire war, Varric.
I wonder if that means that Cassandra is defending herself from an implied accusation, that she is not like the other Templars who desire war. Or that Templars like her broke away from the Chantry because the Chantry wanted too much war.

I suppose that's possible. If Templars could use those abilities without lyrium, would that mean that Templars are themselves mages?

It's very ambiguous. My initialy understanding was that Templars abandonned the Chantry because they want war. Now I don't really know.
It is unfortunate that all this intelligent discussion is not based on as much of an intelligent build up of the conflict.

Looks like its splintered not all mages want to fight the chantry as well and are instead helping them. While some templars are helping the mages.

The Templars probably split up, some wanted to hunt the mages, some wanted to find a peaceful solution to the conflict---->The Seekers?
And what do they come up with?

You know wouldn't it be interesting if the imperial chantry decided to help the mages? Would sure make everything alot more interesting.
Other than providing them with a safe haven, some financial support and training, I do not see the Imperium going into a war in the South, while leaving itself exposed to the Qunari in the North.

Because being loved by one side and hated by the other prevents war how exactly?

Agreed on all counts.
And I'm praying for some smarter, more cunning leaders on both sides than what DA2 had, that's for sure.
Yes, I want Bhelens and Anoras
Well more, Bhelens.
I suspect we may get Morrigan's son, if not Morrigan herself. >.<
Symbol of old god magic and all. I don't see that ending well.

That was the rationale for my canon when he went in the mirror. To raise his son to be what Thedas needs.
But I doubt it will happen.

When one side wipes out the other and sows the fields with salt. Worked for the Romans.

Maybe they have finally gotten past the point of any peaceful end. If anyone could put an end to the rebels it would be the warden or hawke

Well Hawke is an efficient mass killing machine, I'll give him / her that.
I guess next stop for the Seekers is to get the salt.

But why? Sure, I'd sooner trust the Warden than Hawke, but even the former can do little about this.
Thedas needs a leader, not a superhero. Grow up Cassandra.

Because he's a grey warden and he should not even be considering taking a politcal stance on anything? So it only makes sense that Hawke would take the helm.

Except he / she can and do.
And considering Hawke's record, the only thing he / she should take the helm of is a boat that leads to exactly where Maric disapeared.
