I can picture it now approaching the king of orzammar "We need your aid in defeating the chantry and their evil horde of templars"

"In exchange for your aid against an enemy that was contemplating invading your land, which might further increase due to their dire need of lyrium, we would open up our markets to your products specifically lyrium and provide you with financial support and manpower to fight the darkspawn underground."

The king (unless it's the idiot Harrowmont), would at the very least consider it.

Ask Julius Caesar.

Wait........

I mean, according to such shrewd and cold logic, that man must have been a greater idiot than Hawke for failing to see his own murder coming despite clear signs/warnings (One in writing that was found on his body...unread) and then there is his choice to refuse bodyguards.... ;)

Julius Caesar was loved by the real power in the Rome. The army and the people. By that time, the Senators were not as important. And Caesar did not bring peace, quite the opposite. Augustus did.

And yes Caesar was a fool when it came to his death. Too naive and reckless. His track record however, is certainly much more impressive than the void nothing of Hawke, that even in his act of foolishness, he would not be in the same level.

The civil war ended before he died and broke out again after the Caesar faction split once the conspirators were defeated. Greed, pure and simple. As for Augustus bringing peace....he wouldn't have been able to do it without Caesar's name attached to his. (Thus gaining the loyalty of the army despite being a mediocre general) Great man, Augustus, but you know my stance on those two. (Admire them both...but there is a reason why a cynic like Mommsen called Caesar "the greatest of them all": And it is not romantic hero worship either)

Whether he WAS a fool re: his death is debated to this day (The theory that he planned his own demise as meticulously as his campaigns is winning more ground recently.).

Anyway....I could see The Warden and Hawke working together. Well, mine, anyway. Which would be LOADS of fun, given that they are polar opposites. (My Warden you already know, KOP. My Hawke...well, you may not want to meet her.)

Haha why would he accept that it's not his war he is no danger from the darkspawn or even the mages and guess what he can keep on selling to both sides and make double the profit.

4:1 that it's a big bad evil that will attack Thedas and force everyone to reconcile and be pals again. You know, the scenario that we saw a couple dozen trillion times.

Or they just have the 'magic come back' and everyone suddenly becomes a mage--including the dwarves and kossith.

That's how history works, for the most part.

Except they were not big bad evils, but presented as such by skilled propaganda.

Let's hope Bioware takes that route, though I question their ability to create reasonable antagonists at the moment.

DA3:  Invasion of the Vorpal Lyrium Bunnies!

I want to buy this now. Dammit, Ian!!:P

Granted, I am with KOP re: doubting Bioware's ability to writing multi-faceted antagonists. (They haven't since Irenicus and Master LI) Even Loghain was rather cliché in the end. Both Meredith and Orsino had potential which was screwed in the last half of a too rushed Act III. (Had they gone for 4 acts and no Harvestino & the overdone idol influence....the idol influence might even have worked to a degree, had it been more gradual & sutble) But Legacy revived my hope somewhat and therefore I'll wait till the next major release.

The Templars don't have any money...but they might be desperate enough to try to take the lyrium by force.  Mages have something to offer, but they don't absolutely need the lyrium the way that Templars do.  Given that, I'd say a King Bhelen probably will (eventually) come in on the side of the mages.

It didn't really end, he postponed the civil war, which if you want to be precise, was starting since Sulla. Augustus more or less permanently settled it (sort of). It's not about who is greater, that's not the point (Caesar would not have been able to do much without Pompey, or Marius. Or even the Gracchus brothers). I share the other pov that Augustus is the greater leader.
And his death is not the point either. Point is, Hawke is no Caesar. And no where near any one who could be considered a leader.

Why would Arcturus ever work with Hawke? Use him as a tool, sure, that's the extent of the relationship I see between them. :D
And I would be lying if I said I am interested in learning of anyone's Hawke, frankly.

He is in constant danger from the darkspawn and he evidently wants to expand.
And of course he is in no danger of mages, that's the point. Templars are more dangerous to him, especially since the idiotic Chantry can consider an Exalted march on him.

Thats funny because i thought only the dwarves can handle the ore and actually make it useful for them.

So yeah the templars are going to try and muscle in on the dwarves trade while still fighting a war on the surface. No they wont ever be that desperate maybe a few renegades but its nothing more then theives something the dwarves would be able to handle. The templars would just find another way to get their fix.

The darkspawn are not a danger to them after a blight when most of the darkspawn retreat deeper into the deep roads.

Actually, the dwarves are safe from darkspawn only when it's a blight. When it's nto a blight, they infest all the deep roads. Unless, you spared the Architect.

Even though i'm sure that it's going to happen, i'm praying that it doesn't. The Old God storyline in WoW was the final nail in the coffin for me, and it seem like DA is leading put to a 3BE (Big Bad Behind Everything) as well. I wonder how many people are going to turn insane for no reason at all, and when we have to kill them for epic lootz.... Image IPB

That's why I Image IPB Littlefinger. He didn't need godlike powers or magic to throw an entire region into war. He did it all with a shrewd mind, connections, and the keen ability to screw people over.

Only dwarves can handle the RAW ore as I recall.  As for the Templars, you're right.  Any sane and sensible Knight Commander will realize that trying to root out the worlds most battlehardened warriors in their own mountain on their own terms is nothing short of suicide.

I don't think Templars far into withdrawal cravings will be quite that sane, unfortunately, and even if they were, the King of Orzzamar can't assume they will be.

Basically the mages are not a threat to Orzammar, potentially extremely useful, and can offer real services in exchange for lyrium that they can make good use of but don't absolutely need.  That's a much better prosposition than penniless addicted Templars who would do anything for their next fix.....

Even if the Templars did attack, Orzammar has an entire assortment of golems. Even if you destroyed the Anvil, the Shaperate still had a handful of golems left.

Golems like to make heads go squish.

You are right if the mages took contol of lyrium trade that would effectively end the templars very fast. But why would the dwarves close off trade to another side? Lets not forget the Carta is based out of Ozrammar and is in the buisness of smuggling Lyrium (everyone and their mother smuggles the stuff to the surface) and i doubt the merchants guild would want to close off trades to one side completely they are that corrupt and greedy.

Which will likely come from a big magical force behind everything.

I want low fantasy dammit. :bandit:
