Also, I agree, I love his design.

He does look pretty cool, though! I'll give him that!

I find his philosophy to be profoundly evil as it crushes individuality. Yet he's right on one thing: much of the city is ruled by greed and selfishness. In real life, very few people seem to have purpose, but he has that in spades.
He also makes some pretty epic speeches.

I find it kind of funny that he keeps his shoulders well protected while being completely bare chested save from paint and two strips of leather. Maybe the Qunari have some sort of strange anatomy where all of their vital organs are squished into their deltoids.

Maybe the paint is magic?

Very much so. I often stop a couple of quests into Act 3 without any regrets - but I can't not finish Act 2.

Arishok is cool when you compare him to Meredith and Orsino, but he left a sour taste in my mouth. especially when his reason of being in Kirkwall was dumb. But I blame BW for it.
Why do you think it's dumb?

Well those high shoulder guards would make it hard for someone to take his head off from the sides or behind, attacks to the chest, he would obviously see coming. After his rant at the end of Blackpowder, I wanted to be his friend and subscribe to his newsletter lol.
And I wouldn't say his reason for being in Kirkwall was dumb, its a clear sign of the Qunari culture. While most would say screw it and just go home, a Qunari would never shirk off thier responsibilities, no matter how big or small. Not to mention, that book was very important to them, it would be like someone stealing the Declaration of Independence, there is no way, that would just be allowed to happen. Hell Lincoln's coffin was put in a cage and incased in concrete to keep people from stealing for a dead man. Things of cultural importance, people will go to great lenghts to protect them.

Same. I go talk to him at every opportunity just to hear THAT VOICE. My stomach was full of nervous butterflies the first time I had to fight him. I really liked his character and didn't want to kill him. In a subsequent playthrough, I let him have Izzy so I didn't have to.Avilia wrote...

I hate to say it about Bioware because I know they can do SO much better, but it's plain lazy writing to just have your antagonists turn out to be 'evil 'cos they're bat**** crazy' but they did it a LOT in DA2. The friction with the Arishok arose because he just had different values and motives. THAT'S where well-written plot tension comes from.
Here's hoping for a few more Arishoks, Flemeths and Loghains in DA3. Hell, even a few Castillions are better than the slavering, pantomime I WILL RULE THE WORLD!! BWAHAHAHA villains.

Part of it has to be he's one of the few antagonists who isn't/doesn't become absolutely dog-licking bonkers.

I couldn't agree more. I like a villian with a point of view it makes for much more interesting interactions.
(lol dog-licking bonkers - *stores that away to be stolen and used at an appropriate time*)

I'm shocked. Shocked!

One day I'd love to find out what he's thinking there.

ME?! Na! Wouldn't do that!
Maybe Sten stole some of Barkspawns Kaddis and send it back home, where it became the number one must have for the stylish Kossith warrior!

I paused the game and exclaimed "you've got to be kidding me!!!?" I did, seriously. I thought there's no way my char could solo him, his health bar is bigger than my whole party's combined.
Apart from that I was disappointed that such a good character is given such a lame ending - solo him or give him Isabela only to have her run off...seriously? Makes him look a dill imho.

Well... you could always reject his offer for a duel and go for an all out bar brawl battle royal with cheese against him and his cronies with your group.
