Same. I go talk to him at every opportunity just to hear THAT VOICE. My stomach was full of nervous butterflies the first time I had to fight him. I really liked his character and didn't want to kill him. In a subsequent playthrough, I let him have Izzy so I didn't have to.
You too? Glad I wasn't the only one...
I paused the game and exclaimed "you've got to be kidding me!!!?" I did, seriously. I thought there's no way my char could solo him, his health bar is bigger than my whole party's combined.
Apart from that I was disappointed that such a good character is given such a lame ending - solo him or give him Isabela only to have her run off...seriously? Makes him look a dill imho.
Oh, totally. I rolled my eyes when Varric's narration into Act 3 explained how Isabela escaped. I love the chick, but please. Give the Arishok and his men some credit here! It was just too silly.

The Arishok is really an interesting character. My warrior Hawke was totally willing to subit to the Qun. For science! :innocent:

My very own Saarebas, unchained
Maybe at first he follows me because he wants to be led like Ketojan did, and as we travel together he begins to find me Basalit-an (non-qunari worthy of honor) in a companion quest the Qunari appear to take him back, but he wishes to stay with me, leave the Qun and we fight the Qunari.

I found fighting him VERY dissapointing for 2 reasons
1: Rogues can tear him to pieces, just assasinate, run away, twin fang, run away. Mages just gotta stun attack, run, stun, attack, run. Awesome opponent and super strong if you tried a blow for blow battle but if you played smart, not too hard!
2: Why oh why couldnt you fight him like the trailer showed? A battle on a tower during a storm with the fate of the city hanging in the balance, can't get much more epid then that!!! Wouldnt have been too hard to arrange either, maybe the Arishok pushed the Vicounts guards to the top of the keeps highhest tower and kill him as the champion storms onto the towertop! As a mage, the final kill clip as shown in the trailer would have been awesome! I always wanted to be able to do that as a mage (red eyes, awesome spell ect...) Or even some type of rogue or warrior flashy kill! Wish they hadnt put the fight in the damn throne room :/

I think his betrayal is more compelling in some ways than Loghain's simply because the player got a much better feel for what motivates it. We know Loghain feared Orlais but most of our knowledge of Orlais comes from people talking about history. Hawke actually got to experience the worst parts of Krikwall that drove The Arishok to attack in disgust.

It's basically the same except that Trailer!Hawke in front of the keep instead of in the throne room.

That dialogue between Sten and Morrigan was funny.
I suppose the Qunari chest paint is their armor, or they are so awesome that they don't need armor.
Too bad there isn't an option for a Hawke vs Arishok shirtless duel, fight club style, and if Hawke wins, they get the body paint as a reward.

I did too, but I think the developers dug themselves in a hole when they created him. If they considered Arishok as a companion, would his dialogue and everyone's opinion of him change the minute his status of an honorable warrior/dictator to just "Hawke's companion"?
Probably...but alas...we must dream of what damage he could do to Meredith once she went absolutely batty or how he'd most likely rip Merrill's throat without even blinking the minute he discovered her to be consorting with a demon.

For me Act 3 was like an add-on and like other poster, I can quite happily abandon it now I have explored all the options. If you look at the number of main plot quest in Act 3 as opposed to the other two acts, you'll see what I mean. Mostly it was about tying up lose ends with your companions, like one prolonged epilogue. The opportunity to get to know either of your final adversaries is limited and even restricted to whose side you take.
The armour is totally believeable - it is protecting from slashes and down cuts that would disable his ability to fight. Most sword/axes use a slashing action - only foils, short swords and daggers are for thrusting and generally it should be possible for a good warrior to parry these away, particularly if the arms are protected by armour or shield. Although he dual wields, he does not fight like a rogue and it is clear that he is also used to combat that follows an honour code, not sneaking around, using decoys and back stabbing. This is why the rogue shadow/assassin is very effective against him because really it is an underhanded and cowardly way to fight - I didn't care so long as I won - but his culture just has no comprehension of this. He also would have little understanding of how to counter a really strong mage because they never give their mages the opportunity to show their full range of abilities or research new ways of fighting - the force mage is said to have been perfected by the mages of Kirkwall. The use of war paint has long been used by warrior cultures as a form of protection - think native Americans and the ancient celtic warriors. It is also used to symbolise status.
My only real argument with the writers is that they never adequately explain how they came to lose their most precious relic in the first place - it would surely be in the heart of their nation under strict guard. That and Isabella's ability to escape so quickly after being given to them is really illogical and lazy writing. Again, just another of those parts of DA2 that one has to simply ignore or go crazy with disbelief.

I thought she did not steal it directly from the Qunari but rather from a group that was traveling to deliver it to them...
*looks up wiki* - "It turns out that Isabela stole the tome from the Orlesians, who were giving it back to the Qunari."
so - why did the Orlesians have it?
(maybe we will get to find out in the new DLC?)
