First off, I am glad they don't explode in DA2 it gets kind of old in the mage's tower in DAO.
That said, I wish to discuss abominations and their appearances, most abominations are fugly but rather standard, then there was Uldred abomination who was a pride demon with Uldred's face and there is everyone's favorite abominations, Wynne and Anders.
The Reason Wynne and Anders look normal is because the spirits didn't force their way in, is that also why Uldred looked like a pride demon with his face?

You will recall that Connor too looked himself having allowed a demon in willingly. This raises another point. Anders claimed that he and Justice could not be separated without killing him. However, with Connor it was possible provided we entered the Fade to do it. I wondered if killing Anders when we were in the Fade, and Justice was in control, would have separated them without killing Anders? The Keeper claims that to separate a demon from its host would leave an indebilible scar on their mind but Connor apparently suffered no ill effects and went on to become a talented mage.
It was also noticeable that when the Pride Demon left the Keeper at the end, you see the glow as it does so but when Anders dies, there was nothing. It would be helpful to know why there are these differences. I would hate it to be just inconsistent storytelling.

I was under the impression that the Pride Demon was possessing Connor from the fade instead of possessing him in his body, and instead of killing the demon when you murder Connor you just cut its connection to the world.
As for Anders, he has said repeatedly that he can't tell where Anders ends and Vengeance begins, which is another reason I say he is a tragic character, but that is another discussion for another time. The Pride Demon could leave the Keeper because she was his prison and actively rejected him while keeping him within her, Anders meanwhile had accepted Justice entirely.

I think it depends on the demon's power. Less powerful abominations become tumor-covered horrors. More powerful abominations can flip back and forth between their human form and their demon form, which closely resembles how they appear in the Fade.

There's a lot of answers about abominations in this old thread:
