It hasn't been ruled out, however I highly doubt it.
Why?

VGcharts, it sold poorly across the board.nerdage wrote...
It did? I know it wasn't received spectacularly well compared to the main game but do you have a source for it not actually being profitable?

It's good to know that more DLCs are coming, but what about a full-fledged expansion with solid 20 hours of gameplay?
Thanks
Expansion packs are now just a nice memory from times past. It's the DLC that ensures a constant flow of cash with much less expenses. And it also likely provides the ongoing funds for the core team to keep working on the Dragon Age project as a whole, devs releasing patches etc. . It's how the business works today.

So why not just release a BIG dlc pack with much content as if it's an expansion?

"Discussion" of an expansion so far has mainly been David Gaider talking about the difficulties that face boxed retail expansions.
My rule is generally: Don't expect an expansion. But hope for an expansion. Want an expansion. Ask for an expansion.
And then who knows? You may just get an expansion. And if you don't, then they've just been working on DA3 all this time.
If the world were just, then David could just write, and game would happen. But the world is unjust. So we have to take what we can get.

Why the emphesis on boxed? Who said anything about fans wanting boxed these days? The only reason I see for not doing an expansion is that 2-3 hour worth of DLCs are less risky cost-wise to produce in case they're less popular.

DLC has a max size on consoles.

It feels like a letdown to wait months or longer for a dlc, and then have it finished in an hour or two when the main game can take anywhere from 40-80 hours. A 2-3 hour long dlc doesn't feel like it adds much when there are quests in the main game that can take as long to complete.
Awakening would have done better if it didn't cost twice as much as it should have and was released full of bugs. Overall, I liked it, and hopefully DA2 gets an expansion too.

Bethesda still do expansions, well the oblvion and Fallout DLC was pretty large, more like expanions.

If they did an Expansion, I would hope we'd get more options like in Awakenings, to have a meannigful impact on the city of Kirkwall, either as the new Viscount or some other way. And of course an LI or two, that would be nice. Quite frankly, you don't even really 'need' an Expansion per se to accomplish all that, a nice, sizable DLC would likely do that nicely. So whichever way they want to go would be fine with me.

I would like to have an expansion for DA2, especially because the characters won't be carried over to DA3, and I want to find out what happens to Hawke and party.
