Read that. Yahtzee makes some pretty good points and I must admit comapared to Catherine, the romances in most Bioware games seem a bit shallow and almost tacked on. It's less of a building relationship and more of a keep sweet talking them with compliments and saying how great they are until they drop their pants, after which it is never mentioned again. At least in Dragon Age Origins, your companions would comment on it.

Conversely, I loved the portrayall of Shepard & Liara's urelationship regardless of romance in Lair Of The Shadow Broker. You really feel that theyare trying hard to ignore the 2 year gap and become close once again or restart their relationship. Jack's romanceshould also be given mad props in comparison to the stereotypical Miranda and fangirl Tali. On the female Shep side, Thane's romance also has decent buildup but too abrubt

Catherine, the entire experience revolves around the relationship, I'm sure there are dating sims that put Catherine to shame. The romances are subplots, that are suppose to be out the way, there if you want it, but not shoved down your throat, so of course they wouldn't see as much attention as what you see in something like Catherine.

If anything, Yahtzee gives BioWare props (for DA2).

And since he didn't mention Mass Effect explicitly, I would imagine if you asked him directly, he would put ME closer to DA2 than to Mario/Dom.

You can't expect something like Catherine, because the relationship in Catherine is the entire basis for the game, whereas Mass Effect has other stuff going on, like a galactic extinction level event. There's only so much time to develop a relationship between gunfights and explosions. Mass Effect does an admirable job in making the relationships seem realistic and natural (Liara and Jack especially so, as you mention), and not just tacked on as some sort of pervy bonus.

This.

Mass Effect is a space-opera, not a dating-sim. Romance is secondary and, most importantly, optional. Thus, it is treated differently.

One funny thing Yahtzee pointed out in his ME2 review was the "Bioware effect".

Hello Commander Shepard

*wave arm*

How are you today?

*make odd motion*

Bioware needs to work on their physical motions and blocking sometimes.

In some of the games mentioned, Gears of War and God of War (jesus, a lot of GXXX of Wars there) there are a few massive differences between the relationships in them and the relationships in Mass Effect.

In God of War, the relationship is part of the backstory that holds Kratos together. In Gears it is the same kind of thing with Dom, only with a slightly different outcome.
In those games, the romance happens regardless of what you, as a player, do. It is good to notice at this point that in those games you are playing as a preset character. Every Kratos that someone has played as is still the same Kratos. The same goes for whoever the walking refrigerator you play as is in Gears.
And that is the main difference.
In Mass Effect, all the romances are completely optional. And YOU are the main character. Shepard's motivation for his actions is not preset as it is for the characters mentioned in GodoW and GearsoW. What BioWare have done with the player character in Mass Effect is make a game where YOU the PLAYER are the main protagonist (at least, they have done this in a feasible way as it is impossible to program in all the different options that each of us as individuals might want to take). Shepard's motivations are simply a reflection of your own. In Gears and GoW, the only real motivation that the player adds in is in the gameplay, not the story or conversations. So the motivation for romances in Mass Effect are each unique to the player.
So lets say that your LI of choice (if you even had one) was kidnapped or killed in ME3. How Shepard reacts to such a thing depends on how you would act, not how some prewritten character would act.
