Opinions on this? I find it extremly annoying to be honest. I use Anders as a healer and overall booster. So he has his healing spells, Elemental weaponry and Arcane shield, all to make sure he does alot to help out. I just gavew him a couple of creation spells too. His mana is now about 10% of the max. Why does a sustained spell take a pourcentage of your mana? It doesnt make sense, logically! In theory, if it takes more mana, it aught to be more powerful so if the % idea were to work, the more mana you have the stronger your spell would be. I prefer that it takes a certain amount of mana that may increase as you level up or as you add upgrades to those spells. Anders should b able to have a bunch of sustained abilities AND be able to use his heal or revive spells! I doesnt make sense to me! Any comments? is there a mod to make this work?```
Sustained: 20% of mana

I feel he does plenty. I keep him in my party purely for gameplay reasons, not because I like him (and I suspect there's quite a few people doing the same).
Just, don't have all the auras on one guy. They don't generally stack anyway so better spread them out between your mages. Some aren't even that useful. Arcane shield is definitely not worth the 20% mana if you're short on it....
Anyway, as always, check Arelex's and SuicideBaby's signatures for guides about character/companion building and tactics. And mr_afk's making a beginner thread in the gameplay section, you can check that out, too.

I have been using him for most of my playthroughs as a back up, i keep him in the back and if Hawke dies, i use his revive. He is also great in the deeproads and Legacy ( i just found out the sibling could become a warden) but i just find the idea that the spells cost a pourcent rediculous!
I need any boost i can get on hard (soon gonna try nightmare ;p) So i do over fill him with auras but i need them generally. My mage hawke would b in a terrible place without the arcane shield and the elemental weapons helps everyone. I dont want to waste those points giving them to hawke as he is a pure and VERY efficient dmg dealer.

That 5% cannot be so important
.
Anyway, you can try checking the nexus for some mods that change toggle reserves:

its mental focus, it takes attention to sustain those abilities. It's balanced.
click the tactics link in my signature to learn how and when to turn off tactics that are not 100% necessary.

Ahh thats true! ;p; and 5% can b a big difference when its all thats stopping you from casting Revive! Its not that i dont believe it to be balanced, as it does seem to be but you would think that as you leveled up and became more "in tune" with your abilities, you would b able to sustain more spells!

you are able to cast more spells while sustaining certain abilities. if you spec'd your abilities to do so.

I mean if you have say 90% sustained. Unless you have VERY high will or nothing but mana increasing items, you cant really cast much

but you have 90% worth of active abilities and extra stats, its a trade off. Find a balance, and you can have the best of both worlds. Btw, there are very few sustained abilities actually worth picking up. You're over killing it and expecting more than what you paid for.

I would prefer set stamina amounts like DAO rather than percentages. At least then it makes blood magic have a use for willpower, which we are required to invest into.

You are not required to invest in will after the latestpatch halved the will requirements for mage gear. You can simply pre-buff. The only build that could really make use of will now are berserkers that party w/ aveline/fenris w/ rally. Otherwise, it'll be a waste of attribute points that you could spend on dex especially if you play in a party. If you solo, then it would be worthwhile to invest a few points in will. Death syphon (activate it when some enemies are dead), lyrium pots, + mana bonuses from gear and maybe rally will cover any mana concerns a mage has really.
To the TC, the only sustains really worth investing in for non-blood mages is heroic aura, elemental weapons and death syphon. Skip everything else and only sustain death syphon mid-battle.
