I had heard that Origin will not be required for disc purchases of ME3, but I'm not sure if that is true or a rumor...

No, rumor. Anything dealing with ME3 requiring Origin the devs themselves don't even know the answer.

Don't need another frickin' useless program on my computer. Won't buy the game if it requires Origins.

Oh, that's right! Battlefield 3 requires it so it looks like I'll have to get Origins anyway :( fml and fu ea

I'm glad to see Origin is creating so much hate, it's the only way publishers could possibly get it through their heads how insulting (not to mention transparent) their greed is becoming.

The more I learn about Origin, the more I think it doesn't really have anything to do with piracy. There's gotta be more to it than just trying to exert an inappropriate amount of post sale control on their products. Haven't figured out what else their up to though.

It's really just about control. A company like EA doesn't like handing over control of certain aspects of their products (such as distrubution) to other companies. Especially not if that company is one of their direct competitors (like Valve).
It's an understandable position really. And while the sensible person in me rages against the idiocy and user-unfriendliness of dividing up the digital market amongst several platforms, the capitatlist in me thinks it's okay for Valve to get some competition.

i just wish it was an actual attempt at being credible competition. Say what you want about Steam and Valve, but at least Steam works well and is user friendly. It was obvious that Microsoft wasn't even trying when they introduced Games for Windows, but at least they had the excuse having a (dumb) reason not to care at the time.
But now EA comes along and while they have every reason to care and to do their best to make Origin work, they seem to do everything in their power to make to make Origin as unappealing as possible. Heck, even the name was poorly chosen. Incompetence like that just irks me.

I understand this entirely, I've said this myself.

What I don't understand is the dramatic transition from "I refuse to use this program, and will even pass up on great games." to "I have no choice but to install this program."

You aren't forced to install Origin and forced to play BF3. You have a choice to resist and then suffer not being able to do something you like, showing you have a spine to stand against something you disapprove of. I can tell you that I really want to play BF3 and ME3 on my PC but I will not fold on my refusal to install Origin.

^I think thats the reason these EA is being so flagrant about what their doing. They know how addicted people are to video games these days, and know that no matter what they do many people won't notice or care.

Sad really that so many people (not in this thread obviously) don't realize that their rights are more important than video games. I guess some people just don't care until it bites them in the ass, and publishers like EA are counting on this self imposed ignorance.

Eh, I'm really interested in ME3 - enough so to pre-order it, which I almost never do - except for the uncertainty on the DRM.

When it comes down to it, much as I am interested in it, its just a game, and I have other things in my life. I'll wait until the offensive DRM isn't required. In 6 months or a year after release, it either won't be required anymore, or someone will have a crack that bypasses it - and I'll either buy the game then (and use the crack if necessary to avoid the DRM), or I'll have moved on and decided to not get the game at all.

Either way, Bioware/EA loses money compared to what they could have gotten from me without the offensive DRM - either the difference between pre-release retail and the discount price for when I actually buy it - or the entire amount if I decide to walk away.

Lots of other folks will probably do the same. Some will buy the game regardless, others will pirate it regardless (someone will always make a crack). The question then becomes whether EA thinks they lose more money by having the offensive DRM or not.

Well, I lost most respect for EA in the late 90's, and they've never done anything since that would get it back. Wing Commander was one of my all time favorite series that they bought and abandoned (the fact that they call this service "Origin" doesn't help), and I was heartbroken when they killed Command and Conquer...twice.

I too am looking forward to ME3, but I've long since abandoned all EA's other franchises. I'm frustrated and conflicted with my love of Bioware coupled with my disdain for EA. Such a pain that they put their customers through this kind of stuff.

Technically it probably will require the EA download manager, a bioware/EA account, constant online, if you mod the game you lose access to it and all games you've bought on their service etc. In practice though, it won't, as a crack/alternate installer without the EADM installer will be available day of release if not before with the way the internet works nowadays.

Origin has nothing to do with piracy nor distribution. EA knows very well that it's likely going to have the opposite effect. That's not the point. Origin is designed to increase profit. EA knows there will be enough people who either don't care or are ignorant and install Origin. They will be spied upon and the info will be sold to other parties.

Basically it comes down to this: Origin will lower sales, but the extra profit through selling all sort of info about those who do install Origin will be more than enough to compensate.

Not to politicize things, but this really reminds me of a "fact check" by Politifacts (I think) that I saw a while back. Essentially they were checking the whole "social security is a ponzi scheme" comment. Turns out their argument boiled down to "while it's operates EXACTLY the same way, because government is a legitimate organization, it isn't a ponzi scheme."

That's exactly what we have here. If you or I made a program that did HALF of what Origin does and got caught giving stolen personal information to third party vendors, we'd be charged with a crime. However, because EA is a "legitimate" organization who is able to get 99% of their users to agree to waive their rights, it's perfectly legal.

Since most people don't see the EULA until they purchase the product, I wonder if I could return it and claim that I'm not willing to violate my personal rights and freedoms in order to use EA's product. If I could successfully return the game using that justification, I'd be sorely tempted to repeatedly purchase games, open and then return them. EA and other publishers need to be taught a lesson. It is NOT OK to abuse or otherwise take advantage of your customers. You do NOT have the right to steal my personal information whether I tacitly agree to the theft or not.

Well we still have the opportunity to vote with our wallets. I will not buy any game with Origin. Simple as that. And if ME3 has it (and it will have it, otherwise they would tell us already, but they do not as they would lose a tremendous amounts of preorders) I will simply not buy it. And I will pretend that Mass Effect has only the first part as I really hate the stupid "story" in ME2.

Yes, THAT will show them!

This isn't about "showing them." I'm not torch-and-pitchforking EA. This is about me protecting my personal privacy and NOT wrecking my hardware due to the ridiculous lag BF3's beta caused, especially if it's any indication how my computer will perform with other Origin games. I'm not overclocking just because I need to run three seperate programs to run a game. I have enough overheating issues as is. I don't have a heavy duty gaming system. I'm a college student. I have a slightly overpowered laptop, that's it.

Also, thanks for the confirmation about Origin and disc releases. Looks like I'll be using gibbed to convert my PC saves to 360 format...

I wonder what percentage of sales comes from people here? I always thought forum-goers were a small population compared to the rest (in terms of sales).

Almost certainly, forumites are a small population compared to the total of people interested in the game - but the research on it says that for every 1 person who complains, 26 do not but will take the same action.  Those posting about it right now are the "1" - but the numbers here are just among the people who know about Origin and are on the forums.  As the game gets closer to release, and once it is released, the effects of Origin will become more widely known - and the number of people who choose to avoid the game because of it will increase accordingly.

Further, those posting here are unlikely to say they will pirate the game but not purchase it - while there are people who will be motivated to do so rather than deal with Origin.

Yes, I guess it's absolutely safe to assume that only a minority of players go to the forums (for this purpose). I also believe that the vast majority of the players just doesn't know about the perfidious elements of Origin or don't care about their privacy, mostly because most of them almost certainly won't have looked into the matter.

People need to be made aware of it! Talking about it here - their front yard - is a way of openly (for everyone to see) letting them know about our concerns and why we dislike such invasive software and that for a great number of us, knowing about the issue, it will be leading to a thumbs up or down when it gets to making the decision whether we are willing to spend our money on products requiring Origin or not.

But unless a huge outcry by thousands takes place on their forums not much is going to happen I believe. But is this the best place to complain about it?! Well, it's definitely not the wrong place, but other forums/sites, which don't belong to EA may be the better places. Sites which the average player visits. Site like game magazine sites, game review sites. Why? As I am convinced that those sites will be a much better multiplier in terms of reaching larger numbers of players.

To really achieve something, I guess we have to act like a stubborn child with a tin drum. :)

That's true. When your just one of the masses the only real power of influence you have is to spread awareness.

Yes, it is true. But this place is also an important one because we have the opportunity to say: Bioware, we don't like Origin. And this is the reason for it:

"One thing we commonly see is when fans don't like something we do, they put in the comments, 'Oh those EA guys, they're making BioWare do...' And I always chuckle because we are EA, we're BioWare - we're both, and we still have huge autonomy in terms of what we do," Greg Zeschuk told us.

BioWare: EA doesn't tell us what to do

Most of the users here are active in other forums too and so the informations are spreading wide around the world. Even on Amazon exists a discussion about Origin.

The problem with game magazines is that they are depending on publishers or developers. If they lose their input the magazine will go bankrupt. So far I'm very disappointed from game magazines. How long do we discuss this topic? 4-5 weeks. How big is the support from gamer magazines? Is not that much. It's a short article with minimal content. In the print version you can see a little red framed box: "You need Origin to play this game. Because of this you cannot sell the game." Aha, I don't want to sell this game! I only want to play this game. Nothing more.

Another reason not to use Origin:

I wouldn't want a publisher to have control over my property like that. And EA seems to have the intention of abusing their power.
