Will Origin be required to play ME3, now that Multiplayer has been confirmed?

There may yet be light at the end of the tunnel:

According to an anonymous report BF3Blog received from inside Valve, the developer/publisher is currently in late-stage talks with EA in bringing Battlefield 3 to the Steam digital distribution service. The rumor says that Battlefield 3 would be available on Steam just in time for the game’s release on October 25.

According to the report, EA and Valve are very close to reaching an agreement regarding sales of DLC content, which is the main reason Battlefield 3 is not on Steam: Valve requires that all DLC is sold through Steam, while EA would prefer to sell via its own channels. This was the cause of another EA title, Crysis 2, for being pulled from Steam earlier this year.

Many PC gamers have lobbied both EA and Valve to put Battlefield 3 on Steam for a while now. It looks like it’ll finally happen soon.

We’ve reached out to EA and Valve for a comment on this story.

I really hope this will be true, because if it is, I can't see no reason why things should be different with ME3.

Even if the games were sold on Steam the question would still remain: Will Origin be required to play ME3?

I don't care where or how it's sold. If I have to install Origin to play it I will not purchase the game on PC or buy a new copy to play on a console.

Yes, I guess it's absolutely safe to assume that only a minority of players go to the forums (for this purpose). I also believe that the vast majority of the players just doesn't know about the perfidious elements of Origin or don't care about their privacy, mostly because most of them almost certainly won't have looked into the matter.

People need to be made aware of it! Talking about it here - their front yard - is a way of openly (for everyone to see) letting them know about our concerns and why we dislike such invasive software and that for a great number of us, knowing about the issue, it will be leading to a thumbs up or down when it gets to making the decision whether we are willing to spend our money on products requiring Origin or not.

But unless a huge outcry by thousands takes place on their forums not much is going to happen I believe. But is this the best place to complain about it?! Well, it's definitely not the wrong place, but other forums/sites, which don't belong to EA may be the better places. Sites which the average player visits. Site like game magazine sites, game review sites. Why? As I am convinced that those sites will be a much better multiplier in terms of reaching larger numbers of players.

To really achieve something, I guess we have to act like a stubborn child with a tin drum. :)

Anyone remember spore and the lawsuits? EA got that because installing spore also put securom on your disk without notifying the user. EA learned their lesson. They make you install origin yourself.

By the way their efforts to protect their money ironically made spore the (reportedly) most pirated game of 2008...

Ohh and by the way, i will buy the game because i want to support the developers who give me a good time. I liked the previous two games,  it seems the game will be good and BioWare have so far showed me they deserve my money and deliver good games (have some doubts about swtor).  I likely still won't install origin though. As the EULA says: "IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION."
I don't. But i still want to buy the game because i still want to support the devs because they deliver (even though i know EA bought BioWare, sales likely do have a direct impact on the team keeping their jobs and the funding of their future projects) . So what do i do?

Probably going to buy the boxed edition, install, block with firewall, install crack , play without any hassles associated with drm. This works quite well for me since 2007 (gothic 3, though not related to ea, that was the game where i really got fed up with the crap publishers try to force down our throats, cracking the game resulted in a good 10-5 fps gain ... ) .

Thats a good question about origin and steam, because I remember people having issues trying to run gta4 on steam (I still wonder why companies still put securom/tages/cider etc on steam games <_< )

Unlikely. Origin seems more to be oriented towards MP titles.

Given that Bioware just locked a duplicate topic for this, and have yet to respond to this one, the answer is likely one of two things:

1) They don't know yet whether Origin will be required because no final decision has been made.

2) They know, and it will be required, but they don't want to lose sales by saying so.

I'm hoping for #1.

The problem with game magazines is that they are depending on publishers or developers. If they lose their input the magazine will go bankrupt. So far I'm very disappointed from game magazines. How long do we discuss this topic? 4-5 weeks. How big is the support from gamer magazines? Is not that much.

I agree. Games magazines (off- or online) depend on games-publishers, therefore they are NOT as critical as they should be -- or not critical at all. And many writers seem to be "quite young" and without any specific qualification...

Here's an exception from above rule: www.rockpapershotgun.com/. They regularly report about DRM issues and don't hide that they don't like the way paying customers are treated by many DRM-systems.
Of course they focus solely on PC-gaming. And so they are small compared to the likes of IGN or GAMESPOT.

I'm definitely against Origin being required for retail copies. I already have to run Steam for a few retail games I've bought, so I really don't want to clutter up my computer with Origin software.

Sounds to me like it will be required, retail or not. You may not have to log in but you will need to install it.

support.ea.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5291/~/origin-frequently-asked-questions

Beginning in September of 2011, most new PC games from EA will benefit from the enhanced features provided by Origin integrated into the games. PC players will be required to log-in to Origin to play new EA games so you are getting the best possible experience with the full set of online features to connect and play with friends, get help when you need it and keep the game updated with the latest content. Whether you purchase the game on Origin.com, from another site for digital downloads, or at retail for physical discs, new games will require you to have the Origin to play. If you didn't buy your game on Origin, Origin will be included in the installer for the game.

When playing games offline, Origin log-in will not be required to play. For older EA catalog games, Origin is not required to play - though we recommend you use the Origin application for fast, seamless downloads, auto-patching and additional social features.

Edited - For some reason put "single player" instead of "retail"

That doesn't sound too good. I just hope there's no complications with downloading DLC if you use an offline installer and possibly a crack to play ME3. I will not *ever* install Origin on my pc.

Ehh. I think I already have Origin. I'll need to update it though, it's still called "EA Download Manager."

Didn't we all need an EA account to sign up for BSN? And haven't all EA accounts been updated to Origin accounts? If so, we're all halfway there anyway.

If you worried about the potential for privacy invasion from Origin's ToS, then after you've downloaded it go into your computer's settings and make sure that Origin isn't allowed to bypass any firewalls or access any data without permission. I'm pretty confident you can do that with most programmes on a PC.

Its been locked and diverted to this thread. Not entirely sure why - the information seemed deserving of its own thread to ensure it gets around.

Yes, I know. I'm actually telling Priestly through indirect means to link people to existing threads when he closes other threads like a good moderator.

Well now, in the spirit of senseless "Data-mining", until I find out once and for all, about this Origin(reflux)<---GOOGLE IT!!.......there will NOT be any E/A detritus installed on my machine.
Which means no ME3, or any other Bioware title, if'n that's how they want to play.
Goodnight.

I hope they leave the game clean. I got around to ordering a "CE" copy through Best Buy, Still trying to make time to read Redemption.
