Will Origin be required to play ME3, now that Multiplayer has been confirmed?

Mass Effect 3 is going to be one of EA's biggest hits, I believe that it will definitely require Origin to Install and play. It wouldn't make sense otherwise, EA needs some big games to support their spyware DRM. I had ME3 collectors editiion pre-ordered for PC. I just called and changed it to Xbox. This is a bad day for PC gaming.

This is an EA response about whether Mass Effect 3 will require Origins.  It was posted on the steam forums so I am just passing the info on :-

EA wrote ........  "Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Customer Support.

I am sorry to inform you that my colleague's information was inaccurate for your specific query.

Mass Effect 3 will require Origin to run in the background for the verification of your purchase and tracking of in-game achievements. Updates and patches will be applied automatically through Origin. Origin is currently in a beta state. Our development team is working around the clock to improve the application's performance and we have full confidence that Origin will both enhance and enrich your gaming  experience upon the launch of Mass Effect 3.

Please contact us again if you have any further questions."

http://forums.steamp...60&postcount=73

If this is the case and EA already KNOW that ME 3 will require Origin then why haven't Bioware come out and told us ........ oh wait I forgot they have a habit of deceiving their fanbase.  As much as I love the ME franchise (despite the idiocy of MP) in my books Origin is a deal breaker, I can ignore multiplayer but I can't ignore a piece of spyware like Origin on my PC.

If true, worst news ever for ME3.

I'm tempted to ask them if that is when you purchase it from origin or if that means if you buy it from retail you'll need origin. Also if they know if it'll be on Steam which they wouldn't know but would be hilarious to ask them if it would be on their competitors service.

Will it just be running, or will it be always-online?

Both TOR & BF3 got their Origin confirmations (in case of TOR that it won't be required and in case of BF3 that it will) around 4-5 months prior the release. Well, that's how much it's left till ME3. And if what was posted on Steam boards is true, then EA already knows whether ME3 will require Origin or not (though there seems to be a confusion among different employees). I sincerely ask BioWare to finally, officially tell us whether it will be required or not. Definitive answer. This is not much to ask for. I, and many other people need this answer to know whether to pre-order the game or not.

This is from the Origin FAQ :-

Q: Is Origin required to play my game, even if I didn't buy it on Origin?

A: Beginning in September of 2011, most new PC  games from EA will benefit from the enhanced features provided by Origin integrated into the games. PC players will be required to log-in to  Origin to play new EA games so you are getting the best possible  experience with the full set of online features to connect and play with friends, get help when you need it and keep the game updated with the latest content. Whether you purchase the game on Origin.com, from another site for digital downloads, or at retail for physical discs, new games will require you to have the Origin to play. If you didn't buy your game on Origin, Origin will be included in the installer for the game.

When playing games offline, Origin log-in will not  be required to play. For older EA catalog games, Origin is not required to play - though we recommend you use the Origin application for fast, seamless downloads,  uto-patching and additional social features.

Source : http://support.ea.co...asked-questions

So basically regardless of where you buy the game (Digital or Retail) if a game requires Origin it will require Origin.  The only "glimmer" of hope is the last part that does say "when playing games offline, Origin log-in will not be required to play".  However what ever way you cut it, if you want Mass Effect 3 on your PC then you are going to have to install Origin.

What a load of bullsh!t! I don't want to play Mass Effect on xbox anymore why else would I re-buy them for my PC? Well if it requires Origin then I guess I just won't buy EA games anymore until their services eats sh!t and dies. NEVER will I install that hunk of crap on my PC so they can make more money off me. I say suck my dick to that.

I understand. I'm usually campaigning against disc-locked "DLC", which people blindly purchase without realizing they're falling for a pretty unethical scheme.

I still haven't actually installed Origin, but most people who hate it aren't very articulate with their thoughts. They just say "I hate Origin", with optional ****'s spliced in, and sound about as intelligent as people who say "I hate ______" for anything and everything else.

Well at least we have a legit reason. Not sure I understand your meaning of disc locked DLC.

Gah i just learned about this. And im utterly disappointing this Origin junk is required to play.

Gotta be honest, i might just purchase ME3 but find another method of installing/running it. Rather sucks it has come down to this with EA titles. I do not want my privacy invaded by having any sort of data mined like this software do, it would be like having a security camera constantly watching me in my own home. Noway im allowing this.

p.s And as someone stated on the EA forums "I develop software - stuff I have the copyrights to. If Origin reads that, wont EA be committing a violation of MY copyright?".

A very good question if u ask me.

Items being sold as downloadable content already being fully playable on your disc, but inaccessable unless you pay extra. It's fairly common practice now.

Almost the entirety of Gears 3's first DLC pack is already on my disc and usable if I use a hack to bypass the limitations, but I need to pay $10 to access it. Stuff like that.

Someone did a poll recently regarding origin and something like 85% of people who voted didn't want Origin and 5% didn't know, so that leaves 10% who didn't care. It seem to me EA really doesn't care what their fans and consumers want. What ever happened to the customer is always right? oh yes thats right they'll be using a crack to circumvent Origin on the game they bought. How many people will do this? If I had to guess I'd say about 85%   People pay hard cash for games NOT spy-ware regardless of how its marketed.

Wow he actually answered me! :o Well, it DOES give me some hope (or perhaps it's just me in denial mode) since it may mean Origin will be required for digitial copies but not in physical copies (as it is with TOR).

Origin or not, SWTOR will not come through the doors of this house in any software form. I want KOTOR finished or make do with books & such. Key issue is MMORPG, which remains an oxymoron in itself to me no matter how many articles I read & trailers I see. RPG requires more of a story than this new crud. MP added to ME3?!!! Man, it better not soak too much disc content, but if Origin makes this all moot, it could make nice wall deco at least. Also, this DLC thread has me mulling a bit.
