The Cryengine3 is open source for no commercial project now. There is a dev kit to download on their official page.

Huh?  Wow.  I wonder if its a bare bones edition to entice young programmers to start using it.

I added url code to your link for easy clickies.

I won't have time to go look myself today, but wouldn't mind hearing more details here.  Wonder if it can be adapted for fantasy genre.

Didn't want to be the first to jump on this. Very interesting and will be checking it out.

Wow again! Its the full toolset. Can be used for any non commercial project.  What a smart idea. I hope it takes off.

CryENGINE 3 Independent Developers Platform
We
want you to make games with CryENGINE 3 that people will want to play.
We hope that your work will lead to a product you can commercialise. If
this is the case, before you can sell your work or your game, you must
seek a development license for CryENGINE 3.

The screenshots look very impressive. Also, if it is as complex as the NWN2 toolset, then CryEngine is a really good name for it. I seem to remember shedding more than a few tears in my early days of modding...

Cry engine is an engine far better than anithing Bioware used.

It's one of the best engine of the moment. Aion, Arch age, Crysis are made with it.

The hero engine used for SWTOR next to it is a small thing.

The cry engine is one of the best engine you can find at the moment, I doubt it will be easy to do things with it, but it's the current engine that can deliver the best result. I find it superior to the Unreal engine ( MAss effect 123, Lineage 2, the Unreal tournament serie) for exemple.

That does look really sweet! Also looks like a step up from the NWN2 toolset as that one was to the NWN1 toolset.

I see that the source code is available (for license purchase it seems). Depending on costs, this might be a good thing for Plan 9 to look into there DNO.

For the purposes of Plan 9, I would suggest not using a non-open source engine. It goes against the idea of plan 9.

I sorta agree.  No need to ditch Plan 9.  Can still have community using Crytek engine while Plan 9 progresses in parallel.  Will be intesting to see what comes out of the Crytek engine.

Was the purpose of Plan9 to sell it? If not, then why wouldn't this engine be a good fit?

I don't know enough about com-poo-ters to make much of and educated guess, but these may be some possible reasons:

-upgrading the engine without permision
-adding features and rulesets
-continuously nurtured (for lack of better word) by the community and never reliant on bottom line, stocks, bankruptcy, or recessions.
-day night cycle (I'm not sure Crysis has it).  Probably does but I don't recall seeing it in the sequel

I love the look of Crysis, enjoyed Warhead and the first game (second sort of bored me but was visually nice). But personally for a fantasy game, I would prefer the FarCry2 (maybe FarCry3 engine). Beautiful sunsets, Day Night Cycle, fantastic grass lands.  Well done wildlife.   And those grass lands and trees will burn when hit by a fireball...er, napalm. I also like that it has minimal loading. Crysis has plenty of load screens.  Finally, it's easier on computer hardware which is good for social gaming.  So if Plan 9 was to go ahead, I would love to see it based off of FarCry type engine as a jumping off point for how to implement a new engine rather than Crytek

Perhaps I didn't read enough about the Crytek engine, but I was under the impression that it was a graphics type engine that allowed you to build and populate a world, not an entire game engine. The game play mechanics would still need to be added in to my understanding.

One purpose of Plan 9 was to give the modder access to everything. At least that's my understanding. Since this engine is not open source it wouldn't seem to do that, as powerful as it is.

My understanding too. Which would not make this an alternative. I looked at a few of the modding projects and it looks like they require pro-grade teams.

It is a powerful engine - I have mucked around with it - following some tutorials - but nothing is prefabed - and some of the games that are supposed to be free are not there for downloading anymore to grab any crumbs to work with. More work on every aspect - and the pro-grade requirement seems like a good way to describe the depth of involvement needed to get any results at all.
