This has never happned to me before.

It's my fourth playthrough of the game, and I am nearing the end. Tali's Loyalty mission. Flotilla, treason, etc.

Except I can't get through the first cutscene. Because the game crashes every single time. At the very same point.

There's that old lady quarian you speak to right before the trial? When the trial starts, she raises her hands to speak to the audience. At this point, at this exact point, every time, the game crashes. Not just the game, actually. The computer. I have to restart my computer.

Mysteriously, I have found that switching to window mode means the game will only crash when Shepard is called to speak (once again, it will always crash, without failure, at that exact moment).

Either way I obviously cannot continue the game and am annoyed by this, since this playtrough took a long time and I am almost done. I would love to get a good, solid answer for this problematic situation. It would help me greatly.

This game is a digital steam download, unmodified except for all of the official DLC's. It works smoothly and perfectly and always did, mostly, until this point. This case is bizzare.

Thanks heads on, and good night

Without a good specs list including all machine specs, and a list of your drivers anything suggested will be a guess.

But off the top of my head....as in guessing......

1) Corrupted save.
2) Corrupted game files.
3) Video card overheating, due to fan issue or something.
4) Driver issue, such as using one later than 258. to run on an invidea card.
5) PSU dieing.
6) Graphics card dieing.

Am currently trying to re download the game from steam, hopefully it'll do. I mean, I made all the standard checks. File integrity, defrag, nothing was wrong. It's weird. And it's probably not a general hardware issue since other games work well.

I have seen where a single save will get corrupted, and if you use it, then you will have varying issues through the game, but a new save may play just fine, as well as an old one. One way to check would be to load up an old save and see if it works.

And just because other games work, doesn't mean they are stressing the system the same, and thus are NOT always an indication of an ok system. Plus some of the newer drivers, especially on the nvidea cards HATE ME2, so it could also be a driver issue. The reason I put out overheating was because when you changed to windowed mode you went a tad bit longer, thus it could be a card/gpu/cpu heating issue. But since it is only at a single point, I would suspect a corrupted game/save. If you did the steam verify install and it was ok, then I would suspect a corrupted save, which may have happened recently or way back when you first started.

I see. Re downloading and re installing the game did not work.
Now that you mention it, though, I did upgrade my computer recently with a new nvidia type card. Are you saying this could be the source of the problem?

Very possibly. I wouldn't say probably, but possibly. It should be a relatively simple matter for you to download older drivers from Nvidia's archive and test. It would be mighty bad luck if that helps ME2 (though good diagnostically) but other games you might play perform worse.

No graphics card makers make perfect stable drivers, however I have found (my luck?) that ATI's work better for me. I prefer Nvidia hardware (performance wise) but moved to ATI (had been with 3Dfx for years and then Nvidia since the 6600GT) after the 8800GT Super+. First ATI card was the Radeon HD 4850 and then the 5770, never had a problem with 'em and didn't need to upgrade my power supply first time. Speaking of which, power supply issues (e.g. not enough juice on the 12v 'rail') are often the root cause of higher end graphics card problems making problems elsewhere. Anyone else remember/get "NV4_disp.dll" problems?

...Do you think a solution exists that wouldn't require me to either buy a new computer or screw with all of my other programs...? It would be a shame if there doesn't. This is my favorite game, but... it's not worth that much. It's just sad. You think Mass Effect 3 will work, when the time comes?

Almost certainly.

But don't let what i said put you off. Changing driver versions (as long as it's only version change and you aren't moving manufacturer/hardware) is easy as they usually come as basic .exe programs or setup files. Like I said, it would be bad luck and is a good test anyway. Anything happens you don't like, just rollback. Always remember, try one thing at a time so that when you fix it, you know what did it!

I recently upgraded my Nvidia drivers (twice!) and got a crash on my second playthrough of Tali's LM, but not on the 3rd go-through. Not sure if it was due to the drivers or not, but it hasn't turned up since, thank goodness.
