He became a blood mage and bound demons into Corypheus's tomb, sacrificed his morals to keep Leandra safe (either help the wardens or never see her again was the ultimatum).
And he didn't want magic to be passed onto his children because he, like so many in Thedas, sees magic as a curse.
And illness killed him years later.

So it was forced on him? I didn't know that. Ya I suppose depending on how faithful he was that would be a big mountain too cross. Thank you for your answer it's all clear now.

I think he saw it as both a gift and a curse. Or if not a curse, just a burden. Magic is really only a curse in Thedas because of the perception of magic, something the Mages' Collective has been addressing.
My magic will serve that which is best in me, not that which is most base. --- Malcolm Hawke
If he saw it as just a curse, I doubt he would've said that.

Malcolm Hawke didn't want his children to be mages because of the life they would have to lead - either continually hunted or manipulated by others in order to keep themselves, those they loved safe. That is what makes magic a curse. However, he taught his children to live by the true Andrastrian principles, rather than those of the Chantry. Say no to deals with demons and to using blood magic and allow it to serve the best human emotions rather than the worst. Then it becomes a gift of the Maker. The Templar Carver obviously recognised a real sense of integrity in Malcolm, which is why he helped him to escape.
Unless you do take the Blood Mage specialty, in which case you are betraying his teaching, it is noticeable that the Hawke children are the only mages of any power in DA2 who do not restort to blood magic or become abominations - in Bethany's case in particular she must have been just as desperate as Orsino if her sibling supported the Templars, yet she still resists temptation and is appalled by the fact that he (Orsino) succumbs. I have enormous respect for Bethany.

Larius tells you that he blackmailed Malcom to re-seal the prison.Hayes1987 wrote...
