Brienne = Aveline. And I get a definite Meera vibe from Merrill. I even hear Merrill's voice in my head while reading her dialogue. I'm fine with it, though. All we need now is Hodor. Everyone needs a big dumb giant in their party.
You think that's something, read the codex entry for the original Aveline, Knight of Orlais.
As for Hodor, we all know he was inspired by Master Blaster.

Spoilers for song of ice and fire!
Beric Dondarrion after being revived is the aspect of justice in the books, giving the hound and other outlaws he has caught a fair trial but around the time of storm of swords he gave his life to revive a woman who was killed and instead of Justice, she becomes Lady Stoneheart, the aspect of Vengeance.
I thought of it while walking back to campus, that Justice was turned into Vengeance in both series when one of the characters tried to do a good thing.

@the OP - this thread SERIOUSLY needs an ASOIAF spoiler warning in the first post.

Though I'd say early Tevinter Kirkwall is more of an Astapor (first Slaver city in Valyria that Dany buys the unsullied from then frees the slaves with).

Sympathy is lost because the first post only contains spoilers to anyone who hasn't watched the first season of the tv show and a thread discussing plot similarities should be assumed to have spoilers, but if it makes you feel any better I was spoiled when ******** was *********** at his ************* to ******** *********** by ********** and when ******** ********** in the ********** and ********** was ************ by *********** most vigorously also Ned Stark diesGotholhorakh wrote...

The book series has been out for years. The time for spoilers is long long passed. Just because you are new to the series via the tv series doesn't mean the rest of us have to walk on eggshells on every internet forum known to man.
Adding a smiley so this isn't taken as being mean!

I have a strong suspicion Martin is going to change things for the TV series so he can redeem the mess he made of the books. So maybee Robb will live there.
Uh, no. First of all, Martin has no ultimate control over the series' content. Secondly, nothing needs fixed. HBO's series did well because it stuck to Martin's material. If they forget that lesson...
Before this gets locked: We have discussions of both the books (spoilers through the end of ADWD) and the TV series (spoilers through the end of season one) in the Off Topic forum.
The devs said that ASoIaF inspired Origins, and DA2 was inspired by TV shows like Battlestar Galactica. Pretty sure that's one reason I prefer the former.

Martin himself has gone on record as saying the book series got derailed by his own overzealousness. You are right that he has creative control. but apparently it is unfathomable to you that he may use that control to correct the ef ups he admits he made.
Furthermore, you fail to consider the HBO audience. They did not start watching the TV series for it's brilliance, they started watching because Sean Bean was the "main character". Now that he is dead, mainstream viewers can't wait to see Robb defeat the Lannisters and Sansa gut Joffery. When that doesn't happen . . . the series will tank as HBO viewers realize this is not what they signed on for.
I've confirmed this by browsing forums NOT devoted to fantasy/Sci-fi, but instead general forums. I also have discussions with friendss, family, and other TV viewers who like "HBO Shows" such as Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Big Love, etc. They all were incensed that Ned was killed off until I said, "Did you really think they could afford to keep paying his salary? He was the bait in the old 'bait n switch' routine to get you watching." All of them have replied that I made sense, that the show was good, and they couldn't wait to see the Lannisters get justice. These are the types of everyday people who will quit the show if Martin stays true to the books.
I suspect too much time interacting with fantasy fans has isolated you from the larger audience.
Lastly, budgets. Rome was too expensive despite it's success. You really think HBO is going to foot the bill for Martin's extravagent dragons and giants and what not? No way. Gonna have to make some changes.
In closing - I still believe the TV series will deviate from the novels substantially. You can spit tea all over yourself in your smug certainty that you are right. I am not as certain as you, but I think I'm way more realistic in factoring in Martin's displeasure, the general public's viewing preferences, and business.

Huh. I hadn't really given it much thought until stumbling on this thread. The similarities (at least with Origins) are uncanny.
Not that it entirely matters to me, though. Origins has enough originality not to be a complete copy and enough quality to be immensely enjoyable, even with the similarities.FFFFFFFFFF. And here I had the retarded assumption I'd go safely through this thread without encountering too many mindblowing spoilers. Crud.CrimsonZephyr wrote...
The Red Wedding upset me more, especially because Robb would have been such a badass had he lived to become an adult. **** you, Roose.
Curse you, Martin, and your killing pretty much all characters I like. Curse you. QQ
That's Martin's MO

That's taking his comments hugely out of context. He said "the tale grew with the telling" and that he had problems with POV characters being far flung from each other. That is hardly being "derailed." He's describing his challenges in writing a massive epic. Your spin entirely that that equates to "admitting ef ups." The series is just fine. If you don't like it, I'm sure you know you can do something else with your time.Hanz54321 wrote...

And I'm not saying that HBO will not change the series significantly. If they do, they'll lose the engine driving the show's popularity- the core fans who love the series for what it is, not because it's some Camelot/ Spartacus knockup. Where they deviated from the books in season one were, IMO, some of the weakest scenes- notably the sexposition. I fully expected them to flak it up in season one. The fact that they didn't was a pleasant surprise. Going forward... we'll see.In closing - I still believe the TV series will deviate from the novels substantially. After several re-writes . . .
Repeating your first post in your second post doesn't add anything to the discussion.
I undestand my language led you to belive I disliked the book series. However, I feel obliged to clarify that my personal opinion of the SoI&F series in no way impacts my prediction of what HBO will do with it. I have yet to even reveal what my opinion is.
I base my prediction on the masses, human behaviour, market forces, what the author has said, etc.

There was another TV show they cited as inspiration for DA2, as well, but I can't remember which. Maybe Buffy or one of those. I'll never know what inspires such devotion to Joss Whedon.
