I could never understand the hype on Witcher either. That game was pure dog poop. Five minutes of that and I was asleep.

Can't agree with that. The first Witcher had an incredible atmosphere and ambience. A living world like no other. Well maybe except early Gothics. Also great graphics, considering the time it was released and engine it was built on (improved Aurora from NWN). And superb artistic direction. Great, gritty dialogue and a rich story. Beautifull, memorable area design. Great alchemy system. Oh, I would almost forget: choices that actually matter and have consequences! Unlike in... well.. pretty much all other cRPGs. The "clicky" combat system was a bit meh, but didn't bother me much and watching Geralt unleash deadly combos one after another and dozens of different finishing moves, depending also on equipped weapons, was a joy.

Part two has lost a bit of it's RPG character... it's more "streamlined" and much more arcade in playstyle. But again it offers an engrossing atmoshpere, an even stronger, if shorter, story. Superb graphics and artistic direction. And an overall more "cinematic" experience. Overall it's a very fun, deeply story driven action RPG. The gameplay is much more fluid, flows better then in part 1. Though I sometimes miss the slow, serene scenery of Act IV of the Witcher 1... or the deeply atmospheric village of Act 1 with it's dark secrets.

1.Dragon Age(Yea I really liked the second one, sue me)
2.Mass Effect
3.The Witcher
4.KOTOR(Although I still think the second one is better than the first with all the improvements like Influence, Prestige classes etc.)
5.Diablo

I would have put TES on the list too but I don't like the old school DOS ones(Arena and Daggerfall) They're a bit too primitive for my tastes. And with DOS games, if I didn't grow up with them then I have no interest in them.

In keeping with the extremely loose definition of "series" as used by the industry these days, which feels that it's perfectly all right to tack a "3" to a title that changes not only the story and characters of a game but also its most fundamental gameplay designs, I'm going to go with the following series':

1. The Infinity Engine games. (BG 1&2 + expansions, IWD 1 &2 + expansions, Torment)
2. Bethesda's stuff (Elder Scrolls games + Fallouts) (this group might stretch the definition of "series" even by industry standards, but too bad)
3. Ultima
4. The Gold Box series (PoR, CotAB, SotSB, PoD + CoK, DNoK, DQoK + GttSF, TotSF)
5. The Witcher.

Honorable mentions to Quest for Glory ... RPG adventure hybrid, but looking back they fit the modern definition of "RPG" to an absolute tee. stats and stat-based puzzles. story driven game play. romance. They even had the "visceral, action based combat". Those games were what Bioware's games are now... only smaller and nowhere near as melodramatic (for the most part). 'bout two decades ahead of their time, in retrospect.

+ Jennifer Hale, even (Katrina).

Heh... learn something new every day.  Didn't know that.

TBH, I never much got into the whole VO thing, even back then when it was new to the gaming industry.  Only VO talent I really remember from that series was Johnathan Rhys-Davies as the QFG4 narrator.  And Ferrari from QFG5.  Ferrari was fun.  I will admit that Hale does do wonderful work, though.

In no particular order..

1- Final Fantasy series minus 12 & 13 (11 and 14 ar mmo so I don't count them)
2-Dragon Age
3-Enchanted arms
4-Hero's of Might and Magic
5-Star Ocean

Mass Effect & Fallout don't make my list. Simply because, those games have too much shooting, for my tastes.

Zelda

I've seen many people posting Zelda in this thread.

I'm a total Zelda fan, but guys, really, Zelda is NOT an RPG!

So yeah, Zelda isn't an RPG. Just to make that clear.

I was gonna say the same thing too, but i let it ride.

Zelda games are rpg, ME2 is not an rpg.

LOL since when is Asassin's Creed a RPG?

Oh, my God. Undies around ankles and finger in nose. Just how embarrassing; and so much controversy as well.
oops!

Yes it is. Not the deepest system but it's still based on some statistics(TPS/RPG Lite I would say)

Diablo has a much richer character development system. Heck, scratch that. Some strategies, like UFO and possibly even Starcraft/Warcraft have more robust character development mechanics.

And Zelda does not. Zelda is not an rpg.

Uh-hu.

Full series ?

That would be:

1. Baldurs Gate
2. Knights of the Old Republic
3. -
4. -
5. -

I liked Icewind Dale 2, but a bug stopped my playing it, and I never played IWD1. I own IWD1, but I just couldnt get myself to play another AD&D game after already having played D&D 3.5.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was good, but Neverwinter Nights 1 was not.

Dragon Age 2 killed the possible Dragon Age entry.

The Elder Scrolls (TES) are nice for the newest graphic demo ... and thats it. I'm not exactly a fan of it. I just like being able to test the limits of my graphics and other hardware once in a while with an otherwise rather shallow RPG.

The Witcher was nice, at least storywise (god the combat was stupid), but in the end I got massively *** off by the company because they wanted all my private data for the patch. So yeah, since then I havent touched The Witcher again and I havent contemplated to buy The Witcher 2 either. I just dont give a damn. Still The Witcher is the first game when 3D actually looked as good as Baldurs Gate's 2D.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is awesome, at least with the Unofficial Patch. However, Redemption is a completely different game.

Played Wizardry 8 once and I have to say - not my kind of game. I really dont like the primitive rulesystem (second worst after TES) and having a big fight every 3 meters isnt my idea of having fun.

I once tried Might and Magic ... but not for long.

Never tried Fallout much ... certainly didnt bothered about Fallout 3 because its a completely different game than F1+F2 anyway and its mostly another Oblivion. I already had Oblivion. Also, I dont fancy this end of time scenario much, anyway. I rather have my elves.

I liked PS:T, but thats not a series ...

I completely hate Gothic.

I dont consider Diablo 2 much of a RPG and never tried Diablo 1 anyway. I only shortly tested the Demo of Divinity before ditching it again. I simply dont see the point of Diablo-style games.

I dont consider Mass Effect a RPG and I havent ever played it; just watching the YouTube videos already told me enough about it.
