just a little hypothetical post about what our favourite Gunnery Chief!
My thoughts of what went on after horizonup to Shepard meeting with her in 3, are at best long shots but here goes. (might include some time from mass effect 1 to 2.)
I think its possible that she knows our newest member James Vega as this was found on her wiki:

So you think James is cute, eh? Yeah, well, when you said I should "go for him" — not gonna happen, kiddo. See, we have rules about "fraternization". You don't do The Deed with your fellow troops, especially if they're under you in rank. There's all sorts of problems that can happen when two people in the same unit get together.
Let's say your unit is in a tight spot. Some bug-eyed aliens are going to overrun the galaxy. They eat babies, smell bad, and don't have elbows. Nasty. You're told to guard the rear. To let everyone else escape, someone is ordered "hold this spot until we're gone." Someone has to be left behind. You think it's going to be someone you're sleeping with?
I've served with these guys for eight months now. Yeah, some of them make me feel tingly (and yeah, James was kinda scruffy-cute). I hope I never have to decide who lives and who dies. But if I have to, my decision can't be muddled up by magic-sparkly-hearts-and-stars feelings.
Anyways, I'm gonna knock off here. I've got dog watch in a few hours. Want to get a shower and a meal before then. Talk to you tomorrow.

Now i do realise that there is likely more than one james in the galaxy and that this was written about a man leaving the bioware office that day, but whats to say that they cannot implement him into the story line??
Also on James Vega's t-shirt i believe it says SF-03. SF? special forces maybe? it also has a slightly altered alliance insignia so possibly a branch of the alliance?
If James from the email is the same as Vega then what is the relationship between him and ashley now (me3) or even while shepard was prematurely kicking the bucket? If it was going on while shepard was dead did anything change after Horizon?
Another thought that crosses my mind (there's lots lol) is when talking on Horizon Ashley starts a sentence that ends rather abruptly " I thought you were dead. I almost..how could you put me through that"
- What did we put her through?
- What did she almost do?
Then i thought that it may have been she almost gave up the alliance or told them about herself and shepard but then i went down the same train of thought as with her suicide.
