Can move around the map during combat which can be used strategically and there are some interesting puzzles and traps as well.

I had used some traps on some snails to make them fall through the fall and I stupidly walked into and fell on top of them that was awesome. Got my first achievement Image IPB

I've been messing around with class/race builds. This game allows a lot of customization. Where you can really even make characters fit into roles that they wouldn't normally be able to. I've been having alot of fun my Minotaur mage.

Lol, I've caught this ilness a time or two. I'll be watching this forum for impressions of the game. I always like to see indie devs succeed.

Slim, for the next couple of weeks your gonna my Grimrock playtime skyrocket while I die over and over in hard mode/oldschool mode.

I think you might like it too. I know you said you like twitch based game and Grimrock isn't turn based and holy hell I died like 7 times trying to fight three undead skeletons in a room that said "Enter thy grave" really fun.

I'm dying a -lot-, but it's fun. Got to a guy with a halberd, had my first party wipe. Turns out that halberd guy hits kind of hard.

Off to try again!

Human fighter   -  Hey guys there is another writing on this wall. hım mm. It says "Enter thy grave"
Minotaur fighter -  PFFFT "Enter thy grave" my @ss. Lets get in and chop their heads. My collection need MOAR SKULLZ!
Istectoid mage  -  I dont have enough energy, maybe its better to rest first?
Human thief       - No need to wait, lets go in and get shinies !
Human fighter   - Yeah lets go, what can possibly go wrong?

Party goes in, trap triggered. Skeleton guards come 1 by 1 form each wall.1 missstep and you have cornered yourselves with three skeletons. Party dies after painful combat.

I passed that trap only after 4 reloads and some lucky critical strike series.

Ya I got caught by surprise in that room, I made it out first attempt but  it was more luck than skill (didn't get cornered early and got a few crit hits in)

But hey it brings the old school moto back in full force "Save Early and Save Often".

THIS IS A VERY GOOD GAME, SO FAR. INSANELY ATMOSPHERIC, AND THE GRID COMBAT WORKS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU'D THINK IT WOULD.

Here's a tip I've just learned prowling the Grimrock forums I thought would be very useful for people to know. STR increases all damage, both Melee and Ranged. Further, Ranged attacks always hit and require no Accuracy.

In a Nutshell this means that a High Dex does nothing to improve your Ranged attacks. Its only useful for Melee accuracy and Evasion. Don't be fooled by the Dex bonuses given by the Missile Weapon skill.

Anyway Dev posting here confirming the Dex thing. I'm rethinking my party right now based on the info. This almost makes a Minotaur archer sound sexy now. (But don't have multiple minotaurs with the Head Hunter Trait. Works best when they dont have to share.)

İm using this setup

Human fighter with sword&board                                                        Human thief Daggers&evasion
Minotaur fighter with spear/halberd&throwing                                   İnsectoid Mage staff&torch

Dont know evasion helping me that much but after 4 lvls enemies seems only hitting my fighter on front(who has some heavy armor and a good shield for nice mitigation)

BTW anyone found any bow? I found many arrows(poison, cold etc) but no lcuk with bows. Its a good thing no one in my party is using bows thb :)

I'm tempted. Though the only similar game I have played before is Wizardry 8 and in some reason I have not finished it.

Is there any suggestion to some newbies like me in order to enjoy it and stay alive? However, I think I will wait for a while until the Linux version is out.

Anyone freaked up by earthquakes?

When it first happened it scared me really good :) Tought i did something wrong or there is a time limit for floors and i passed it.
Then i figured maybe a timed secret passage opened and roamed all map like crazy.

Now im used to it :) Happened 3 times last night.

I was at first I looked all around to see if some hole opened with spiders crawling through or something.

Does anyone know if the quakes trigger anything or is it for the atmosphere?

I think it atmospheric maybe related to that dreams.
I wandered all floor again but found nothing, maybe it causes a very minor change but according to my masterfully drawn maps there was no new sections.(or i suck at cartography :)

When I got there I found it atmospheric as it implied there was more danger than just monsters and pit drops (which actually come in handy sometimes for extra EXP and weapons/Armour finds).

Then I ran into the spiders.......... I hate spiders.....

Always jump into pits :) There is at least some skulls or herbs in them and many secrets, especially at 4th-5th floor.
And i do hate spiders with a passion in this game, found a note yesterday warning about spiders and while i was reading it one of that bloody beggars jumped on me from behind. :pinched:
They are quick and poison hurts bad. BTW sometimes poison dispels itself but usually i need a potion/blue crystal to heal it, smells like bug :)

@skelter192
Im going to share my maps as soon as i scan them. I hope it will be helpfull to my fellow prisoner friends :)

Meh the new version of Avernum just came out on Steam. Now I have two old school RPGs that involve throwing four prisoners into someplace dark. (completely forgot how they had similar premises.)

I started with:
Human Mage: Arianus Arsaces
Human Thief: Julia Severus
Minotaur Fighter: Caracalla
Lizard Fighter: Antiochos Pontos

But I hanged in Level 1, 5th door. Don't know where to 'Loose' the damn rock. What should I do?

There is a secret switch at a near wall.which is at corner of a brick . That kind of walls are different from other walls due to that switch.
Get used to that kind of secret switches, there are more oncoming.

Edit: BTW just killed my first ogre :) Those brutes are deadly 2 hitting my heavy tank and they can take a lot of punishment. Also they like to headbutt you from a far :)

Edit 2: Lost my sanity in Maze of Madness...

Seems difficult. When I find the switch, should I left-click it or stone it?
