How do I cast a spell? I hit the wizard guy's spell attack and get a bunch of runes.

Healing? Are there healing spells? Potions? My minotaur is regenerating health at the speed of baked sludge.

click a rune combination then click cast button on the right side. For example, the very first rune button+cast should give you a fire spell if you have at least 2pts in Fire magic.

Not healing spells, but is alchemy that can make healing potions. Til you find the tools for that, use the rest function to heal. Make sure to keep your team well fed, especially the minotaur who's not food-efficient.

No healing spells, you get to craft potions at end of second floor.
To cast spell you must have a certain rank at that magic school and you must discover its rune combination. Either look it up from net or you can find scrolls inside the dungeon.
Basic spells need 1 or 2 runes, more powerfull one or enchanments(like enchanting normal arrows with fire) need 3 or more.
Or experiment like i do :)

Edit: Ninjad by a pirate :)

My Mage can spell fire magic at level 6! The unhappy part is when you've got surprised/ambushed by a fast enemy it's a bit hard to focus and use magic .. *throws torch* lol

I killed lots of bugs, an undead and an eagle till now (1.5 hours) and got leveled up. This game is much fun.

I'm not sure if you this has been mentioned, but Vitality is not backwards compatible.

Every time you level up, there's a random roll to increase your Health your class and Vitality. A character with higher Vitality will gain more Health that one with lower Vitality (on average) and adding Vitality later on only helps with subsequent level ups.

What is the point of the grid based movement?

Firstly, the entire game is a nostalgia trip, and grid combat has been used in PnP RPGs for awhile now.

Secondly, it's probably easier to design and program for. At least I recall in the 1990s when the ability to move and look freely was remarkable enough a feature that it was advertized. Though I missed out on the early FPS. I think they had that feature long before RPGs like Wizardry did.

So this weekend I've been playing some Grimrock holy hell on Level 4:Archives I was stumped! I was so annoyed I had played TOR and then when I went back I figured out the puzzle and I saw my first um tentacle creature. :o

 New patch is out

http://www.grimrock....1-1-4-released/
  • "Here is the complete changelog:- vsync is enabled by default
  • - borderless windows are no longer topmost
  • - pressing ESC closes character sheet
  • - fixed unlimited frost arrow exploit
  • - improved display resolution auto-detection at first launch
  • - fixed a couple of typos and broken english
  • - removed check that disables high texture resolution setting when running low on video memory (some graphics drivers seem to report available video memory incorrectly)
  • - quick save/load
  • - volume sliders
  • - to avoid confusion autosave & quicksave slots can’t be renamed anymore
  • - adjusted gui layout and camera fov so that user interface elements do not overlap with important screen areas on non-widescreen displays
  • - invert horizontal mouse option
  • - camera bobbing option (only available by editing the config file manually)
  • - configurable tooltip delay (only available by editing the config file manually)
  • - frame rate limiter (set to 120fps but can be changed by editing the config file)
  • - custom character portraits
  • - bug fix: very long map marker notes without spaces in them causes the automap to crash
  • - bug fix: editing a map marker that is on the same exact spot as a marker on the other map page edits them both at the same time
  • - bug fix: map labels are sometimes drawn partially underneath map symbols
  • - bug fix: topmost menu item doesn’t work reliably in high resolutions such as 2560×1440
  • - bug fix: wall text translations are not dismissed when right-clicking
  • - bug fix: inanimate objects can be backstabbed
  • - bug fix: projectiles go through doors in some very rare cases
  • - bug fix: saving the game crashes if all save game slots are full and the autosave slot is deleted or unused
  • - bug fix: Fighter’s Challenge doesn’t open if there’s an item in front of the door (only applies to new games, existing save games still have this bug)
  • - bug fix: saving the game just after the end fight creates a corrupted save that can lead to crashes and the end sequence not getting triggered correctly
  • - bug fix: auto pickup doesn’t pick up the correct amount of ammo in some rare circumstances
  • - bug fix: standing on stairs and turning with the mouse, followed by a turn using q/e keys is buggy
  • - bug fix: when a monster is damaged, experience point text sometimes (very rarely) flash in a square where a monster has been killed
  • - bug fix: trying to load a save game that has just been deleted manually from the file system (e.g. in Windows explorer) crashes the game"
