Over two games I have continualy asked myself who are the Reapers where did they come from and have had my hopes for an answer dashed by Bioware (not complaining, I enjoy the mystery).  Now I have never read any of the books or the graphic novels so I do not know if my questions havebeen answered ther, but probably not.  In the absence of answeres I have ammused myself makign up various theories on their origins.  Which I will share with you now and will enjoy your feedback regardless of your view.

Theory 1: Evolution
When the universe was created millions of single celled organism were scattered through out the galaxy, over time these organisms found each other and attached themselves eventually becommign sentient.  Over time they learned how to manipulate metals and various alloys and created for themselves "bodies" to inhabit.  Spanning millions of years they built the mass relays and the citadel.  Eventually biological creatures arose and threatened these inorganic beings, so they destroyed them all.  After the wars they realised they could harness organic matter to futher evolve their own species, hence the continued eradication of organics through the millennia.

Theory 2: Typical AI vs Man scenario
The first advanced civilization created the "Reapers" and the mass relays and the citadel.  Much like the Geth, the "Reapers" rose up and destroyed their creators, and once again figured out they could harness organic matter to evolve.  They took credit for creating the Citadel and the Mass relays because they helped build it and have since used it to further their own evolution.

Theory 3: Reapers revolt and enslave their creators.
Much like my second theory the "Reapers" are created by the first advanced civilization, they rise up and kill mo  tof their creators but leave some behind to safe guard the Citadel and give them the name Keepers.

Theory 4: My personal favorite
50 million years ago the race that created and built the mass relay system and the Citadel realized that their race was dying.  To preserve their lives they created harware the was built and designed to hold all of their consciences, to not  corner themselves in just a single systrem they created as well a vast number of warlike ships designed to let them traverse the universe.  For the time they flourished as a benevolent race befor erealizing that they could not conitnue on this way.  They discovered that they coudl prolonge themselves using organic matter and began to systematically purge their territory in search of all organic life thus beggining the genicidal cycle that has lasted millions of years.

These theories mostly adhere to game canon, sometimes vearing off to let my imagination run wild.  Please feel free to give us your own theories and talk about mine.

Theory 5: Obligatory humans made the reapers (my least favorite)
We are not the first evolution of humans to dominate this galaxy, millions upon millions of years ago, humanity was at it apex, and created the most technologically advanced machines the galaxy has ever and will eversee. One day, these machines decided that humanity was too arrogant togo on and commenced to irradicate their creators. In these machines, humans recreated their own arrogance, and since these "Reapers" deem themselves the hieght of evolution, they periodically purge the galaxy of organic life, deeming one species worthy of salvation through destruction.

Theory 6: Species becomes stagnate improves themselves mechanicaly.

Many, many years ago an ancient species ruled the galaxy.  Having been aroundfor millions of years, their species finally stopped evolving.  Being an arrogant race that created FTL travel, mass relays and the citadel they decided to take on the job of mother nature and evolve themselves.  They created tech and DNA manipulation that furthered their species, over time their species changed enough that they became a hybrid between the organic and inorganic.  Millions of years passed this way until they could no longer function in their current form, and decided to
evolve once more on their own...   They began creating massive organic machines to hold their collective consciences, each world responsible for their own platform.  The process complete they shed their mortal
forms, however in the rush to achieve perfect evolution and immortality they forgot one major thing, power.  Without a source of power and a way to create more of themselves, they found they had to rely on organic creatures to continue their existance.  So they wait out in dark space, only to awaken periodically to resupply and reproduce.  A sad existance indeed and the price of immortality.

I believe the reapers have been around for around a billion years, I could be way off but that is my gut feeling. Now their origins are  a bit more of a mystery, obviously we know part of the process of how they are created but that doesn't explain why they were created in the first place. Also it is implied by Sovereign that the citadel and mass relays were created by the reapers but the words he uses are "legacy of my kind". It is very possible that when Sovereign refers to "my kind" instead of other reapers he may be referring to the race that he was created from. I believe Sovereign was most likely a first generation reaper and it may have actualy been that race that created the citadel and the mass relays as well as the reapers. Now maybe they meant for the reapers to be warships and the reapers rebelled or something or that race wanted to ascend itself, I am not sure.

My personal theory is close to your number 3. Except WE were their creators, long, long ago. We fought them, and they annihilated us. Before they wiped us out, we sent beacons with our genetic dna in it to preserve us in a form of stasis at a level hidden from the Reapers.

Remember how there was evidence that the Protheans meddled with our evolution? They did. They revived us....the species long ago who created the Reapers.

The Reapers aren't dumb. To the absolute contrary. They suspect something is special with humanity. I think it raised some instantaneous and complex mathematical evaluations with them.

I think we created them, and I believe they may be getting suspicious from their own equations and data processing.

I hope not,  I don't want humanity to end up being the orignal creators of the reapers,  this kind of stuff has happened before in sci-fi

You're right, if someone else did it before I wouldn't want it to be like that.

Ugh,would be too Halo-ish, some type of human or human like species makes them, then find them again?

Ah yes, "Reapers". The immortal race of sentient starships, allegedly waiting in dark space. We have dismissed that claim.

Back to thread: We'll never know who the Reapers are until ME3. End of Line.

lol that happens with alot of different posters to me.  I picture them being their avatar I guess.  Then again some avatars seem to match a person's posting style.  Sometimes posters with the renegade shepard avatar act renegadish.

Yeah, not all posters. I can't read your posts on a Collector voice since... well... nevermind.

Especially the ones with TIM. Not to drop names or anything, but I still think of TIM when I read posts by the person who now has Barrus as their pic.

Personally I would prefer it if we didn't actually find out 'how' the Reapers became what they are. Most of their mystery and alienist comes from the fact that absolutely no one knows of their origins. They are unknown, unknowable and that alone terrifies many. People fear the unknown and that is exactly what the Reapers are.

Also, boo to the whole 'humans did all this/or humans are way more awesome then anyone else' because really, that is such a dead horse it isn't funny. I face-palmed at that part in Halo.

I don't want to know. I think we'll find out in ME3 but imo it'd be better if we didn't. Of course, I say that not having played ME3: For all I know what they've come up with blow us away. But it'll likely be a created-overthrows-the-creator origin story and if that's the case I'd rather not know at all. The mystery makes them seem more dangerous. The unknown is frightening.

I think I'd like to bring this back up. I have seen several theories over the last week or so, some of which are similar, others are vastly different. With so many people having different ideas, it's a good time to bring thsi back and stick and "obligatory" theory that alot of peopel seem to favor....

Theory 5: Obligatory humans made the reapers (my least favorite)

I believe that the Reapers were built by an organic race, who also build the Citadel and the Mass Relays. The Reapers probably wiped them out in a scenario similar to the Geth / Quarians other than that I'm not sure, there just isn't enough evidence for me to say more.
