my entire party is lvl 17, yet the wyrm is kicking my ass. i even tried turning the difficulty down to normal, but yet i still die.
i know it isnt necessary to slay it to get to the urn, but...
1. what is it weak against? (spells)
2 how can i stop it from "pouncing" on me?
3. what tactics are most effective against it?
4. what lvl SHOULD the party be before attempting to kill it?
thanks.

Spells are not your concern for this battle. Your mage should be relegated to healing only, while your tank keeps the dragon busy up close and two other characters peck away at it's health from a safe distance.
Your tank needs to engage the dragon from the side, preferably next to the dragon's hind legs - NEVER stand in front of the dragon for more than a few seconds, and always move around to its side whenever it turns to face you. I also hope you have Shield Wall and/or Shield Expertise - it will save you a great deal of trouble during the battle.
Be sure that you activate Threaten, and use Taunt on the dragon at regular intervals, so it doesn't fly off or blow fireballs at your other party members. Also, be sure that the others are positioned far away enough that they can't be hit by the dragon's fire breath when he uses that.
Furthermore, you may want to consider using Wade's Superior Drakeskin Armor (if you have it), Juggernaut Armor, warmth balms, and any fire-resistant amulets, belts, or rings on your tank to try and minimalize damage from the dragon's fire.
Beyond that - make sure you have a good stock of health poultices and lyrium potions in case you need an emergency heal, or if your healer is running low on mana.
I hope that helps. If you have any more questions, ask and perhaps I can help.

i wish i had as much control over my party as it sounds like im going to need in order to accomplish the myriad of tactics you expressed above. it all gets chaotic in a battle of this magnatude.
should i shut off tactics completely? (so i can have total control over my comrades) or shall i use specific ones to keep them in the positions they need to stay in?
alas...they seem to do whatever they want to sometimes.
so i should only use one tank? i was using 3 and a mage and it still pwned me.
the big quiet guy (white hair, forgot his name) does have a sword (Tusaris or something of the like) which is a +10 to damage vs.dragons. sounds like he'll be the lynchpin on which my victory is hinged.
gotta get him some fire protection...
i have recently purchased a greater warmth balm recipe. still need to lvl my mage up a bit more to get master herbalist.
usually my main strategy (in all battles) is to cast inferno and death cloud over the enemies, then cast mass paralysis to keep them rooted and ensure they suffer a horrific demise. lol. most of the time, i dont even need my other comrades, even on hard. until these orange named bosses appear anyway.
with dirty wrym able to leap about, this doesnt seem to be the best course of action however.
i guess i'll try and lvl my characters to 20 before i try to really go after it again, focusing on mass healiing and let the tanks do their thing /w taunt and threaten.
hopefully this will be enough to keep that bugger in one spot long enough to actually injure it.
thank you nonetheless.

The other three party members should hang back and chip away at the dragon with bows/crossbows/staves. Set the healer's tactics so that they heal you whenever your health drops below 50% - hell, if you have another mage with healing capabilities, put them in the party, too (the more, the merrier!).
As for party positions - there's no need to move them past the gong you use to call the dragon. Just set your party to hold position and send your tank in to taunt and hold aggro at that point, and the other three will attack and heal as needed.

The best tank for this fight is Shale. Shale (like Dog) cannot be grabbed and thus doesn't need to panic about takling the dragon head-on, plus you can equip Shale with defensive fire crystals. Warmth balms are handy if Shale is not your tank.
The dragon is immune to fire (so forget inferno) and vulnerable to ice (oddly, considering where it lives), so you'll want Ice spells and small ice crystals for Shale. Frankly, Morrigan with Winter's Grasp, Cone of Cone, Ice Weapons and a Heal with a properly-crystalled Shale can take on the dragon as a two-man (or whatever) team, no problem, plus or minus the odd health/mana pot. Anyone on top of that is just taking it down faster. Wynne's healing or buffs for the tank come in handy. Everyone else (that is, apart from your tank) is probably best just being given a bow with the possible exception of Sten if he has the sword with +damage against dragons. Just try to keep the heat (pun intended) on the tank.
The dragon also levels up with you, so coming back later is a little futile. Although, here's a nifty tip if you are fleeing the scene: there is a blacksmith in Denerim who can use the drakescales you've (hopefully) collected from the smaller dragons while clearing out the temple/mountain to make some nice fire-resistant armour. Comes in nice and handy against dragons.

Make sure the three non-tank party members have their behavior set to RANGED, otherwise I'm not sure but they may switch to melee and run up close (i.e. Sten).
Also, keep an eye on the cooldown of your healer's heal spell. If your tank needs a heal and it's cooling down, have the tank pop a health potion.
Another really helpful spell is Force Field, if your mage has it. You can cast it on your tank and he will not take any damage while it's in effect, but make sure you have him Taunt first before you cast Force Field on him, or the dragon may turn its attention to your other party members.
Good luck!

bummer that that thing actually lvls w/ you.
i think i got some ideas and at least formula for attack now. ice is good, fire resistance= good. healing and ranged w/ one tank using a fire resistant shield.
think i'll make shale the tank because he has fire and ice crystals, and has immunity to knockdown?
the main reason i mentioned leveling more is so i can get the master herbalist skill, thus allowing me to brew gr8er warmth balms.
thanks ppl. wish me luck.

Cone of cold can be your friend in any dragon fight
Totally.ive used it against every dragon, then use earthquake once its down to middle health.then have my rouges switch to archs and just shot away while my tanks Attacks from behind/side(like that other person said above works great).just watch out for the tail and when its ready to swap its wings.

I just beat the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest about an hour ago and slew the dragon again, myself - hopefully the OP managed to do the same, by now.

On normal difficulty:
I've killed with two handed Sten . . . I don't know why people think a shield is required. I go Yusaris all the way.
Morrigan on deck with Cone of Cold and regular heal. I used to need Force Field to protect party members who get caught in the jaws of death . . . but now I just heal through it.
Lelianna as archer is easier, but I've used Zevran in melee with multiple hale runes in his daggers to keep him standing. Duncan's dagger makes it simpler.
My main is the sword n board. He's strictly there to taunt and soak up the Lion's Share of damage.
Maybe two heal pots used on each melee guy plus Morrigan's heal if the pots are on cool down.
Everybody does get a fire resist salve before the fight.
Some good tips on positioning in this thread, but on normal mode honestly I just yell Leeroy nnnnJenkins and go get him.

Also dont be afraid to drop the difficulty down to easy if you need too.

The Dragon fire will still hurt a lot, so a Healer and/or lots of health poultices are a must

Or you could just not kill it, because contrary to what the OP thought in his first post, you can walk past the dragon to get the urn and walk out again without ever fighting it.
But...it's a dragon. A boss fight. You can't just walk away from all that experience and loot!

Well...until you level a bit, get the right gear, and are better prepared

Furthermore, the creature remains quite passive. It doesn't seem to bother anyone, and no one save for the Disciples even know it's there. Hell, even as you tread the mountaintop, it doesn't disturb you - unless you hit the gong/blow the horn.
So basically, it comes down to you killing an endangered animal for personal glory, or leaving it to its own devices. Leaving the dragon alone also plays a part in the Epilogue - and if you'd rather the Sacred Ashes not to be exploited by the Chantry, it's better to let the creature be.
Personally, I sort of regret killing the dragon, now - not only for its endangered status, but because the Ashes will undoubtedly be used and abused at some point in the future. So I think it's best to just let a sleeping dog lie - both of them.
