I'm starting up another game, and I'm looking for advice about who to take with me. I didn't take Aerie last time (mostly because I've always found multi-class characters frustrating), but I do kind of like her so I'm planning on taking her along this time. I plan on taking Imoen for sure, so that will already give me another mage, but do I need another cleric as well? I usually play clerics myself, so I don't know if Aerie is a good enough cleric to last the entire game.
Thanks for any advice!

Aerie can do it as is, especially if you have a small party. I have been known to change her to a single class Cleric using Shadow Keeper. She rocks if you keep her out of melee.

Level 1 NPCs is the way to go. It enables you to choose the class of all 17 main NPCs.Thus you can have Aerie as a very useful single-class Sorceror or whatever.
This mod does not enable choice of race or alignment, you will ShadowKeeper for that.

Even if you play near vanilla, a PC cleric and Aerie will work. And if Jaheira or Cernd is in the party, it's even easier.

Do the math. If you need 6 casts of Chaotic Commands and Death Ward before every major battle, she may be a bit short on spells. If all you need is a little healing, she should be able to cope. Note that Aerie's true strength lies not in simply in her healing spell slots though, but in her combinations. High speed healing, Spell Triggers with 3 x Holy Smite, Invulnerability + insta-kill effects (whether against undead like Kangaxx / Bodhi using the IMoD or against some other unlucky fool using Harm)...

I like Aerie with a small party, that way she levels fast and you can focus your attention on how to use and combine her spells best. As H_T said, the class combination is more than just a cleric plus a mage. Be creative.
Years ago, I did a run with just an F/T PC and Aerie, thus covering all four base classes. We took Imoen along later as well. That run was great fun, the F/T could handle all the small fodder you run into, while Aerie was there to provide some buffs and unleash destruction in the harder battles.

Huh, people actually *like* Aerie? I was always under the impression that she was one of those characters nearly everyone hated.
That said, she was always one of my most useful party members, being a sort of "one-stop magic shop." Although she's not as good a cleric as Viconia.

Never understood why people like Viconia so much, other than her romance. Evil clerics suck with the lack of a truly evil campaign.

Two reasons: Vicky has a very good storyline, and she flips undead to your side two levels higher than a good cleric kills them off. There are several battles where that can be very useful.

I've never found any use for that. Better to blow up 50 shadow fiends and be done with it rather than toying with them. Also, Unholy Blight is totally useless compared to Holy Smite.

I think Aerie is useful if you want to augment a full-time Cleric/Druid and Mage combination.
So, if I take Jaheira and Nalia, then Aerie provides augmentation to both disciplines. If you plan to pick Immy back up, then you are heavy on spellcasters but that might work if that was your intent - otherwise you might have to send one of them packing.
A mosquito bite will kill her but if she stayes back from the fray she can be a great combat mutliplier.
Ishad Nha's point about Level 1 NPCs is of note also. You can customize her stats to fit your needs and change her class to vanilla Mage or Specialist or to some form of Cleric/Druid.

A mosquito bite will kill her if you don't have her cast protective spells. Remember, any caster is more powerful than a non-caster (with the possible exception of pure druids, because I don't like or understand them).

I once did a playthrough with a F/M/T and Aerie... she was a weapon of mass destruction.

I stand corrected.
And, in her defense, I have used her with Jaheira, Nalia, and Anomen and she was definately a 'combat multiplier' as we military types say!

What's nice about Nalia and Aerie is how they outgrow their naivety and become pretty badass in ToB and beyond.

I got Aerie pretty early and she hasn't left since (though this is my first playthrough). I'm a Cleric 9 dualed to Mage so at the moment we're pretty similar in spellcasting capabilities, and it gives us a lot of flexibility (and a lot of clicking across when picking a spell). With Nalia (may drop her when I get Imoen back) for more arcane and Jaheira providing Druid spells (lots and lots of insects... mmm) things appear to be going pretty well, though Minsc still seems to be doing most of the killing.
Incidentally, there is a belt you can get which sets your Con to 18 and is great for her. It's a one use a day item, annoyingly, but lasts 8 hours, so it may as well be persistant tbh. Still, it bumps her health up by about 20 pts.
