Did you ever play this on C64? MY little brother and me played that one for a vast amount of time over and over.

Seems you felt like I did (though owned many systems) I always had preference for Sega with MS then MD which then switched favorites to Sony with PS1, 2 then 3.

I had a Gameboy. My sister had a Gamegear. My dad had an Atari that I never got into. Played some games on my uncle's computer. Later got a Genesis, SNES, n64, PS, Saturn (yes, lol), PS2. Got into PC gaming more. Got a Gamecube way after it came out. Got a Wii way after it came out.

@Filament

What Gamegear games did you have do you remember? I only owned like a couple games which came with handhald after buying from my friend in school. I always prefered the Lynx to Gamegear myself.

We used to play MK in school we convinced a teacher as part of English class to let us write up on the aspect of gaming and to be honest it was just an excuse to play MK during class on MegaDrive. He fell for it and we did end up playing games for quite few lessons till he caught on and stopped it. Surfice to say we never wrote a single word about gaming or MK in class. :D

I remember Crash Bandicoot quite well though never got into Spyro myself. I don't think I ever completed CB though which is shame. I have to admitI have never heard of Croc that one must have slipped under the radar for me.

I never beat Crash either XD

And Croc was a lesser know franchise, and it was kinda creepy at times cause the graphics and level design.

Hm... I remember Halley Wars and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Maybe some Sonic games too? I don't remember much, except that it was backlit and so much better on long trips in the car at night. Though it took a few million batteries to run.

edit: I particularly remember these things in this video at 3:15 and 6:30. I think 6:30 is the farthest I ever got, hah. That thing creeped me out too.

The Gamegear I guess might sound odd really but I think partial reason never liked it as much as the Lynx is the system always felt too 'bubbly', sort of too rounded and shaped. I'm slightly odd that I like square based feel of the Lynx and at that age it felt more futuristic with more buttons and vents. I know odd thing to have preference about but it's true. Ofcourse turns out these days bubbly systems are all the rage and I was misguided. Still though my preference hasn't changed in that I prefer less round and bubble shaped systems to this day. I remember Dr Robotniks though, was quite fun game.

The golden age for myself would be around Snes/Megadrive and PSone too. Though in a way I have huge fondness for the old text based adventure roleplaying games from Atari, Amiga, Amstrad, Commodore days too. Heroquest from those days I felt like was also an RPG to me as well as the D&D style games on top of the text based adventures. They remind me a great deal of choose you own adventure books and from age of child growing up to adult now I can still happily sit down and read and take part in choose your own adventure books to this day. Part of that is due to those text based adventures where controls were simply typing (N)orth, (S)outh, (E)ast, (W)est to move or (U)p, (D)own, (O)pen, (L)ook and (E)xamine style.

I never owned that one, my couple £ pocket money only allowed me to pick up a single game or two at most each weekend since back then they cost about £1 to £2 each. So although owned around hundred or more for each system back then I never had all of them.

That is one I missed but love the music though.]

I did however own these ones International Karate and Barbarian. I spent truly vast amounts of hours playing these two. The music in Barbarian I can still remember to this day and the lopping off heads is today as epic fun as back then. The main reason these two stick out in memory a great deal is because both were two player and me and my little brother would go against each other time and time again.

My first RPG was probably FF2 (4) on the SNES. Then came FF3 (6), Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Lufia, Lufia 2 and Chrono Trigger. Then FF7, 8 and 9, Xenogears, Lunar and Lunar 2, Azure Dreams, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, Thousand Arms, Wild Arms 2, FF Tactics, Suikoden 1 and 2 and so many others.

I couldn't even begin to list RPGs have played in past 31 years, was hard enough remembering all the systems let alone all the games classed as RPG's on those systems. Though I can comment about your list, such as mentioned earlier BoF is one of my all time favorite series, as is FF. I have played every single title you have listed with 2 exceptions, I never did get around to playing Lufia or Thousend Arms.

Wild Arms was amazingly good story imho for the time and even today I can still remember the music as though was yesterday for each of the first few titles. I am sure you remember this music it is one of my all time favorite themes even today and one of my most inspriing memories of the aspect making me want to play any game in history again. Aswell as the improved quality in the third title music.

Two of my favorite themes and inspiring a desire to play again of all time with the only other title that has same effect from back then being Secret of Mana intro theme. Those three songs any my favorite almost of all time. I really liked Wild Arms 2 music too but the other two were my favorites by far. I lost some of the enthusiam after Wild Arms 4-5 I don't know why but they felt like they wernt the same.

Azure Dreams I have fond memories of, building the town the what felt like an endless trying to reach the top of the tower. Great game. I have played and very much enjoyed all of the ones you have listed cept those two I have yet to play. Xenogears was great fun and Xenosaga always found struggle to complete though because was such hard game imho. Lots of grinding between bosses for myself I just found it hard but very enjoyable.

I played International Karate but never Barbarian, unfortunatly.  Since were on C64 games here, how about Archon:The Light and the Dark, Karateka, Yie Ar Kung Fu and Beach Head ?

Archon was a great 2 player game.   It was like chess, but when you would meet at the same square, you would go to another screen and fight it out !    www.youtube.com/watch

Or the Knight Blazer theme: www.youtube.com/watch

And speaking of music, the Lunar games both had awesome soundtracks. People talk about Leliana's song in Origins, but what about Luna's boat song? www.youtube.com/watch

I have a secret love of Wild West style themed RPG's and Wild Arms are to thank for that. All first three titles in series had amazing soundtracks imho. But my favorite is still the intro song for Wild Arms 1 and 3. For the reason that they everytime hear them make me seriously wish to play them again. Very few titles even today have that same effect. The only exception is by todays titles DAO :This is war. That gives me the same feeling as Wild Arms 1 and 3 did plus SoM intro themes in that it makes my wish to replay a title regardless of how long has passed.

I never actually completed Lunar though have played it, so I unfortuantly don't know all the songs as never heard them all.

For me it started when I was 4 or so. Maybe younger. I would play Mario on the NES with my dad. Then it just went on from there. I got a GBC+Pokemon for my birthday when I was 6, then my sisters and I got an N64 when I was 8 or so and played Goldeneye and Star Fox endlessly with my family. All the while playing Sonic and Zombies Ate My Neighbours on the Genesis, and Crash Bandicoot and Tomba on the Playstation. Also I loved playing The Sims with all the expansions on my PC. From there it went on, and I bought more systems - GBA, DS, GCN, Wii, Xbox360, and 3DS. Been a gamer pretty much since I could pick up a controller.

First ever I can't say I recall that far back it would naturally have been on the Atari as that was my first set of systems however that was around 25+ years ago after playing literally hundreds maybe thousends of games. It would of been I am certain however a text based adventure game of which I class those as RPGs personally. Could of been anything from The Hobbit to Time and Magik or simular title to those but maybe even older title.

Well it's coming up to 6am now almost so I think I'll go get some sleep, but had good times thinking back of games and systems used to own and comparing history with people so far. Will probably be back talk some more tommorrow see what people have wrote for their histories. Hoping this thread inspires others to talk about their own history in gaming and titles played on those systems.

This. No other systems out there can lay claim to as many legendary RPGs as these two. Chrono Trigger alone makes the SNES top dog.

I think Ecco was one of the very early games on the N64. It was getting towards the end of its life cycle I think by the time I got one. The only game I remember playing the hell out of on N64 was Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I did get a lot of angry joy out of the SNES. There were some fantastic games on it. I kind of miss some of those old platformers.

True. I played as the black spy in Spy vs Spy so I always wanted him to win in the Spy vs Spy comic strip in Mad magazine.
