After a long and glorious battle, the Reapers were defeated. Shepard and his crew met back up on the Normandy; exhausted, wounded, and grieving companions lost. There's a moment when they're all gathered in the same room at once, and somebody has broken out some booze. Shepard looks around at what is left of his crew, imagining the missing faces as if they were standing right there; laughing and drinking with everybody else.

As if to try and understand his commander's perspective, James Vega walks up beside him and observes the festivities.

"We did it." Shepard murmurs, still struggling to clasp his mind around the reality of their triumph.

"Yeah, we did." James goes to pat Shepard on the back. Shepard's spine shatters.

But if he does, it should be so epic, so glorious, and so awesome that every Krogan on Tuchanka will look up, wrinkle their brows in disgust, thrown down their weapons and lament, "Dammit. We'll never top that."

ive red a lot of people saying that they would like shepard dying with an ultimate heroic act...like a kamikaze fly against the.... "reaper controller"? if i remember well... Sovereign says that they are all independent from each other... a nation... so, how could there be even a reaper controller? .... just thinking out loud

anyways.. i dont want my shep dies... he has to survive! at all cost! at least with LI.... i didint have any relations in ME2 just because of that! ........

Getting run over by a random car while walking down the street after beating the reapers.

in more serious terms: Going down with the big guns blazing. I can just imagine him deciding to fly the Normandy right into the middle of the fleet and wipe them out through self-destruction.
Just see the scene: The earth falls, the united fleet is on the run and in tatters, as they flee from the reapers to the relay they realise that the only way to stop them is to blow up the gate with the reapers near it (as we know, when a relay goes boom, it destroys EVERYTHING within a large radius). The plan to blow it up goes wrong, the reapers stand between Shepard and the gate and are preparing to wipe out the rest of the galaxy when shepard decides to destroy it by crashing the normandy into it, leading up to a direct run straight through the middle of the reaper fleet, as a burning normady drives headfirst into the gate, and blows it and itself up, taking the reapers with it.

Or, well, something like that, written by someone more talented than me.
