Speaking of Cassandra, I finally watched Dawn of the Seeker last night. How old is Cassandra supposed to be in that film? Also, I was curious about the timeline. It references Kirkwall events (pre-Hawke Kirkwall events I know), but the ending seems to hint that Hawke has happened? So how long are the events in the film itself supposed to span? /stupid questions

I must say, I really loved Cassandra in this. I can't wait to see more of her in DA3.

agree! I actually realły enjoyed it. I thought her storyline and good/bad history with mages was a little cliche, but nevertheless she was a good character... And SO badass. Re: timing, no one has ever said how old she was and when it was set exactly. I think someone told Danny that Cass is less than forty in 9:40 (which had been my guess). The Kirkwall events they mention happened in 9:21, so I had speculated that thè movie events were a few years later. So guessing 9:25ish. I had figured she was 16-20(Templars start their training at 15, Keran had been a recruit for 5 yrs already). Lets say 20ish. Then in the DA2 epilogue in 9:40, she would be 35?

My thought on the book scene at the end is that it has to be much later than the rest of the movie. Whoever wrote that book... Hawke's story doesn't even start til 9:30. But who knows... Maybe folks are still talking about the Perrin takeover in Kirkwall in the 9:30s.

It was Mike Laidlaw who told me she wasn't 40, but I honestly couldn't tell you how old she really is since the ten year spanse of DA2 really threw off many of the characters for me. It could be that the issues in DotS took place concurrently with Act 2 and finished when Alistair was saying that there were problems in Orlais (if you meet him as King). That way by the time we meet Cass in DA3 she could still be a 28-33 yr old. It's weird because Leliana, Isabela and a lot of characters from Origins could be in there forties by now and it's not explicitly talked about so I imagine that the writers think we should just forget about ages for now.

Also, forgot that DG said that this was "years earlier" than DA2, when Cassandra "was new."

And NOT stupid questions, because I think those are still open questions.

Well that unhinged my idea lol...

I agree about the cliche bits, but it was a lot better than I expected. Enjoyable.

Thanks for the timeline info, the abrupt time jumps in DA2 tend to throw me for a loop when I try to place things.

LOL that's what makes it so confusing... I wish they had at least made her hair short in the scene with the book to sorta show it was in the DA2 timeline. ... If it was!:?

LOL charlottecorday, I think it far better to use your brain space for RL events! I worry now that for every DA fact I store away, something important gets overwritten... "Tiny blond child who are you and why are you calling me mommy?" ;)

You know I just saw a post on the forums that gave me an idea of what the backgrounds in DA3 will probably be like. I mean we'll all likely be dropped in the middle of the story, maybe not right in the middle of the story like DA2 but somewhere like Awakenings. So here is the quote.
"just a note...
for anyone who's never done the orlesian warden in DAA before thinking about this to give it a shot. (or to replay one or two as a refresher, if you've done it before and have the time/inclanation to do it again.) you get a good feel for that blank-slate type of background within the DAverse. with multiple races. that way you can compare to classic warden origins, as well as hawke. there are also reference the pc's character background a few times in dialogue (nothing very specific, but it's there), so you can get a sense of that as well.
i don't think it will be quite the same kind of thing they'll be doing with DA3, and the ferelden-orlais dynamic is present where it may or may not be in the next game. but it's something to work with, and for those of us who have trouble divorcing race and origin in our heads, i think it helps."

I mean I'm sure most of us have experienced the Hero of Ferelden import to Awakenings but it's sort of like what it will be in DA3.

Awakening Backgrounds:

1. Hero of Ferelden

2. Orlesian Warden

So in DA3 it could potentially be...

1. Noble

2. Street Rat

3. Avvar

4. Silver Order Knight

Maybe some are even cut off based on how certain choices were made in previous games though I doubt it.

Danny - interesting point they make. I started an orlesian warden once but didn't get past the first couple battles. This reminds me that it's something I'd like to do.

And, I like those ideas for the background... Although dunno what a silver knight is... Given how customizey the devs hints have been, I actually expect/would hope the backgrounds to be even more in depth than that. For ex, within the street rat origin, you could decide if you'd been sent to prison or not, something like that which would have some bearing on the story.

If you played Awakening and was able to get all of the materials for Wade to craft (not for personal items but for the soldiers of Vigils Keep.) than in the epilogue a slide talks about how the non-Grey Wardens were outfitted with bright silverite armor and were thus named the Silver Order and became one of Ferelden's premiere forces...I believe.

I would think that the backgrounds will be shown and then when you mouse over or select one they extend and give us a paragraph or two about the background and how your life has been up to this point.

I think the background will have several layers. So you'd start out picking your class, then your specialisation, then you'd pick your history, then maybe family history. For example:

Rogue
Dual wielder
Street rat: Spent your life on the streets, stealing and swindling nobles to get by. You've lived a life of petty crime, forever watching your back, you trust no one.
Family History: Orphaned when you were 7 years old, after your prostitute mother was murdered by her jealous alcoholic lover. Your father died before you were born.

Aww man, this would be as depressing as it gets (kind of like Earthborn/Sole Survivor in ME)- but I can see this happening.

I would like to see something in between, though. It seemed like in DA:O, you were either born really high up, a mage, or down. And I want a *good* reason why my PC is leaving/left her family (if s/he had one), friends, LIFE, etc., other than being in the right circumtance at the right time. For example, I think they did a good job explaining this is DA2- running away from darkspawn seems more believable than "oh look, you're in luck, Duncan has just arrived and he happens to be a Grey Warden!" Granted, the circumtances will be different come DA3, so... it'll be interesting how they incorporate backgrounds/etc. Hopefully it'll actually impact things a lot more than ME's.

But yeah, Danny boy, I agree we'll get thrown in the midst of something big- I'd just like to know *why* this particular character is the future hero.

It's also just getting to me that Cullen will be... getting up there in age. How old would he be when DA3 takes place? Just hitting 30? D: I hope no older- though he does seem to get better with age XD

Yeah, it's these extra layers I was hoping for. I don't know that it needs to be more than a couple of choices, maybe even only two per background, which would give you the same eight as origins. Wait, am I counting that right? human noble, human mage, dwarf noble, dwarf commoner, dalish elf, city elf, dalish mage -- ok seven? origins, plus the rogue/warrior choice for five of them? why does this number seem wrong? is my math bad so early in the morning...?  Anyway, so I guess you could even differentiate specialization choices (rogue/warrior/mage), weapon c hoice (dual wield, ranged, NOA), family history (orphan, youngest of eighteen, etc), personal history (street rat, noble, avvar, fancy dancy knight). Some choices could preclude some of these, but I think it would be cool to have a bit of a tree of choices.

Cullen was supposed to be 24 in 9:30, so depending on when the game starts, presumably 9:40 or after, he'll be around mid thirties.

Hopefully regardless of our background/class the game will tell us how we came to be part of the Inquisition (or whatever we are), perhaps if you have a dodgy background then you have the choice to pick from being forced into said organisation as a "serve the penalty or rot in prison/get hung", or you joined of your own free will to get yourself out of the gutter.

That would be cool... To be honest, it would be nice to have the option to be kinda dodgy and get recruited anyway, instead of obviously being the best of the best (puffs up chest!) like in the GW story. I mean, granted, in a few cases you were potentially escaping imprisonment/death sentence, but you were still wrongly accused ( valiant sob!).

Agreed. I like the idea of being a real sh!te, but are given the chance to better yourself whether you like it or not. Then of course, you'd get the option to truly redeem yourself for you past crimes by becoming a "good" person, or carry on being a bastard, murder knifing, shagging, stealing and generally being a complete ****.

You know, I only learned about the murder knife this year! I had always heard folks call the knife you use on Anders the murder knife, but it took forever til I realized some folks meant something very particular about that phrase and so I looked it up. LOL I guess I never did a d!ckish playthrough with DA:O, so I had no idea!

edit: and YES, this kind of redemption story would be great! Sorta like Duncan and his GW recruitment, but still... it worked because it's a good character angle.

I know this is a bit off topic, but honestly, what do you guys think of this:

(Obviously smaller)

Also- a bit off track, but if we ARE able to recruit Cullen, I'd like to see the surviving Hawke sibling (if any) make an appearance maybe with their cousin (I forgot her name), and see everybody's reaction.

LOL I like it! You know... you're right! There wasn't really curly hair in the other games. Except Cullen, I guess... LOL

And, I would love any sort of cameo like that. Personally, I'm much less interested in the Hawke siblings than many other cameos, but I am certainly very curious to see Cullen react to old "friends." Particularly Hawke!  We saw them interact a bit in DA2, but it seems like a companion would be able to say something much more personal than just "thanks for saving [Keran | the templar rebellion | Kirkwall]".

I wonder what Hawke and Cullen would say to each other if they run into one another in DA3? I imagine it would a different exchange of words depending on whether your Hawke is pro-Mage or pro-Templar.
