That's s good point. I wonder what level Cullen would be if he joined the party? I mean, he's pretty experienced now over the course of two games. Perhaps him leaving the order for some reason would reset him in some way? Not that it would make much sense, but you never know.

Like any high-ranking soldier, Cullen's experience is largely administrative. He knows how to maximize resources, minimize casualties, and translate the orders of his increasingly deranged superior officer into language his subordinates can understand. He has basic warrior skills and ordinary templar abilities, but unlike Cassandra, he was never a field agent. He went from being a newly-knighted templar to being the Knight-Captain of Kirkwall practically overnight. It is unlikely that he has had as much reason to use and develop his templar talents as, say Emeric or Thrask. With that in mind, it would be highly possible for him to join the part at a low level. He could be a 30th level administrator, but a 6th level templar, if that makes any sense.

In that vein, I wonder how much discomfort he would feel about his lack of practical experience. I could see it being a source of embarrassment for him, something that he conceals as much as possible.

Hmm, interesting. I'd never considered there being a story-based reason for Anders's skill reset, just that it was a hand wavey retcon that no one seemed to bat an eye over. So that's been my reasoning for why Cullen could potentially still be a low level companion despite being boss level in DA2. berelinde, those are all plausible reasons for him (well, both "him"s) being lower level again. To be honest, I doubt they'll even bother explaining it, though, like with Anders...

That certainly seems like a plausible reason for him to still be a low level. They'll probably never give us a decent explanation though lol.

I always sort of imagined that companions were only as strong as the protagonist. They were above average when you meet them but beyond that it takes traveling with the hero/heroine to make them into the awesome sauce that they are.

As for Cullen, I felt like he was above average in his skills, but his field experience was minimal at best, though the way he's been portrayed it seems like he's a bit of a bad ass.

I think he's probably got above average/advanced will and determination, but just has average Templar fighting/strength skills.

The one thing I have noticed about BioWare companions is that they're all "special" in some way or have had some sort of rare experience that makes them exceptional in some way.

True, they're all "special". What fun would it be if we were all super awesome and then "by the way, here's Bob. He's really good at.... um.... well he's an extra sword." Like that expendable crew member Jory in Origins. lol

Anyway... Hooray for electricity! Glad you're back up and running, R2. Image IPB

Yeah but low-ranking companions don't always make sense; I don't think the devs think too hard about that. Merrill comes to you with that whole keeper tree... like she wouldn't already know how to do any of that? And Fenris with his special tree as well... he seems like he knows how to utilize his markings during cutscenes, yet when he's in your party, he has to "learn" those special skills by leveling up. Oh and I guess he's just been swinging blindly at people at getting lucky for however many years he's been on the run because his regular warrior skills are also low lol

It's a universal rule of CRPG that followers are always 250% more bad-donkey before they become recruitable than they will be afterward. Fenris's warrior abilities (he never uses the magical fisting thing outside cutscenes, that I'm aware of), Merrill's Keeper skill tree, Tallis's ginsu chef act, Isabela's concussive bosom (OK, it was her knee, but it still looks like she's knocking the guy out with her knockers). Then they join the party and they're pretty much shooting spitballs at bad guys. I keep hoping that they'll do a banter that lampshades that, but they never do.

Oooo, look at this tweet:

"Are you a 3D artist with character model creation skills? Join the BioWare CGHUB 2012 3D Challenge! http://bit.ly/QX9dEj"

I wonder if they're working on creating the companion models now? Or if they've already done that, but are now working on npcs and various characters?

How cool! Am I reading it correctly that it's a fanart contest? I don't think they're inviting folks to design anything that will be in the game, are they?

Does anyone else imagine the writers pit to be like a witches covenant, where they gather around a sacrificial alter and formulate delicious ways to break our hearts, whilst cackling maniacally and feeding fan-girl tears to their powerful malevolent overlord- Darth Gaider.

... No? Just me then!

I've been looking at the DA3 concept art properly on my computer, since I've only really seen it whilst using the Internet on my phone. Seeing it blown up big on my monitor looks awesome! I think the Frostbite 2 engine is really gonna do the environments justice this time round. I can't wait to get horribly lost in the forest ruins area... preferably with Cullen and the other new companions!

I know. They really are stunning. I can't wait to see this game. Particularly interested in the outside areas...

Also, SO curious about the Grey Warden. I keep wondering if they're just messin' with us by constantly showing Grey Wardens as part of the concept art we've seen to date. Of course, the GW armor is particularly distinctive, so that may just be an easy thing to show that has immediate recognizability.

HEH so here's a hypothetical for the cullenites... What if Cullen became a Grey Warden?? Would that fit his character? How might he change after the Joining?

I think it would give him a sense of purpose after the Templar Order went to sh!t. Maybe he'd even lighten up a bit since his life would be significantly cut shorter due to the taint.

Lost...uh yea...that's a good word for it.

Elf Companion: There you two are! Where did you run off to?

*PC and Cullen trade suspicious looks*

PC: We were uh, lost. Cullen got stuck in a trap and um, we got seperated...

Qunari Companion: Mhmm...Hey Templar, your skirts on backwards Image IPB
