Hey, has anyone here read Asunder yet? I just got done with it last night. I imagine Evangeline's attitude to be similar to what Cullen's would be re: templars and Chantry.
I haven't picked that one up yet. I have "Stolen Throne" and "The Calling". I've read "Stolen Throne" but am still working my way through "The Calling". I want Asunder though. I want to know more about the Templars. I almost always side with them but grant the mages mercy. Except in DAO's Broken Circle quest. I couldn't justify killing the mages outright, when I could kick Uldred's 4$$!

I quite enjoyed Asunder and recommend it when you get to it. Can't say much else without giving anything away, but it takes place immediately following DA2.

Otherwise, I'm about halfway thru the Calling right now, but haven't read Stolen Throne. I've heard many say they think Asunder is the best...

LOL Aveline has a crush on Cullen? My gawd the poor boy would be terrified of her!
She's too manly for him lol. I think she's just interested in the story Varric is writing.

Oh, I just thought of something. If Cullen is included the way we all hope he is in DA3...what I fear will happen is what happened with FFX-2. I didn't play that game, and it had already been a year or more since it was first released by the time I bought it, and all I know is that game looked like it was only released because of the fans wanting a happy mushy lovey dovey ending compared to the ending of FFX, which I thought was very good and realistic. And from what I've read and looked into it, it just looks horrendous x_X. So, I hope while they include him as a companion, they don't make it too easy predictable or something where there's always good things and not a lot of bad serious things happening. I don't know if that makes sense--a happy ending--I do like, but realistic endings I like better.

LOL I rather liked Aveline and could totally see her have a a hero-worship sort of thing with the dear Knight-Captain. Especially given her partiality to templars already.VampOrchid wrote...

Ick...and just imagine him and her together....makes my skin crawl lol. But yes, I can see her whole hero worshipping him for sure.

Meenie, I hope your little one gets better soon. My kid is 14 and he's still bad at being sick. Of course males never outgrow being babies when they feel bad! All this Cullen talk made me go ahead and start a new game in DA:O. I bow to the modder who made it possible for this:

But there will be mods! You know there will. For PC gamers, someone will mod Cullen to look better. This is why I'm not gonna reserve it until I see who the companions are and what they look like.<_< I usually play everything on PS3 but I will become a PC gamer if I must. :bandit:As long as the story doesn't suck toes and they have GE voicing our beloved templar, I will be happy.

1) His parents died in a mugging while at Denerim market and he had to fend for himself.
2) He was abandoned by his parents.
Option 2 goes further though. He was born to a Tevinter magister who dallied with an elf. Yes he's elf-blooded. The magister had yet to have a child with magic so he thought an elf might assure him a mage heir. But when Cullen was old enough to be tested for magic and wasn't a mage, the magister cast him out.
Now here's where it gets all explody on me:
Cullen was found by another magister who keeps slave for blood and was traveling so he took the boy along as a travel-size source of power but the magister was killed in Denerim or Highever or Amaranthine - take your pick. Thus Cullen was left alone to find his way. Or... after being cast out by his father, he was found by a Qunari. Tevinter and the Qunari have been at war for centuries so a scout or something could have found Cullen. The Qunari do see children as precious and not to be wasted so he took care of Cullen until he could leave him in a human city, figuring if the boy was strong, he'd find a way to live.
The reason I ask for opinions is because Aris wants to help Cullen find out where he's from. The initial reason I had this question was because I wanted Cullen to do something extraordinary as a templar. So then I thought, a magister might reject non-mage offspring but in order to make that important, I've been devising a thing where Cullen is a descendant of a Disciple. Disciples were Andraste's most favored protectors and she bestowed upon them powers that her regular knights did not have. When Cullen's father tested him for magic and discovered he was a born templar, he got rid of him. But killing him outright would have taken his magic away so leaving Cullen at so vulnerable an age, he thought the boy would die and he wouldn't have to worry. The elf thing came into play when I remembered that Andraste marched with elves at her side and perhaps maybe some of them were Disciples.
This is more or less just me brainstorming here. I may not even go with the whole "Cullen-is-a-special-snowflake" route at all. I just wanted some kind of big stakes for my story but I don't want to make Hawke the Special Snowflake. I want to make it seem like she is but it's really him that's got a true gift.
What do you all think?

The magister using him as his personal font of power is an idea I had been toying with as well. I'm intrigued by this idea very much.

I'm interested in #2. I agree there's a lot to expound upon with this one. Cullen being the special snowflake is a more untouched idea as well.

Perhaps the magister that found could have died because he was using Cullen. I have it so that the reason his father didn't keep him around for power was because of Cullen's unique thing where killing him (if your'e a mage) will take one's magic. So his dad couldn't use him. The magister that found didn't know this and neither did Cullen so when the magister tried to use his blood, it weakened him instead? Leaving the mage open to attack from whoever and Cullen fled. If Cullen isn't a Special Snowflake then his father could have still drained him for power. Unless he thought his child was too good for that fate despite not having magic?
It is an intriguing idead, though.
I want Cullen to be the Special Snowflake because I've read so many Hawke-as-super-special fics, I want to vomit. AAANNND she's like "Oh yeah, I can do this that and the other too." with such a blase air that I'm like
This all started when I was drafting an important scene. In which Hawke gets pummeled by raw mana by a bunch of mages during a big battle in the courtyard before the Chantry steps. What they're trying to do is sunder the Veil. Cullen sees this and decides that if he must, he'll die dispelling that sheer volume of magic so he begins the motions fo a Drain and other templars see this and follow suit. Six in all converge on Hawke and when Cullen pulls her mana, the mages who had been casting on her are all shut down and raw energy swirls through Kirkwall, nullifying all mages who were casting at that moment. Most of them permanently. The reason this happened is because of Cullen and his "Specialness". That's how everyone comes to know - even Cullen himself - that he is a Disciple. And the greatest threat to mages ever. But being the voice of reason, he isn't going to go all "Mages bad!" and kill them all. But he CAN do a lot more to quell the mage/templar conflict, something neither mages or templars want.

Did anyone ever find out if Cullen is a first name or last? Or is it simply "Cullen"... like Cher? lol
LOL! The image that presents!
Ok... I'm better now. I think... hehehehe Um... I don't think his name was ever explained. I would believe that if he were abandoned, the one thing he would know is his given name. If he was found and had no one to claim him, the Chantry wouldn't give him a last name, just a first. So I don't know. If they do write Cullen into DA3 and give him a backstory, I hope they don't go "Oh Cullen is his last name," because that would be too much like those "vampires". Do not want.
