Aaaaaaaand que all the Cullen hate on the confessions Tumblr LOL.
Look at it this way: I'd rather use a character that was both hated and loved than one which nobody cared about either way.

Strong opinions mean that the character is interesting.
It's why Anders and the Arishok are among my favorite characters. Though Anders is probably unique in being able to inspire love and hate at the same time, at least for me.

I think a character that provokes any reaction is a good thing, if it provokes mixed reactions then that's even better. So, pretty much what DG just said lol.
Agree. That's one of the reasons Cullen's such an interesting character. I love how, even in the latest Cullen flame thread, some folks saw him as an unhinged monster in DA2 whereas others didn't see him as damaged at all. LOL Of course, part of that is limited screen time and not exploring all the optionals with him... but still. He's definitely a character's that has struck a nerve.

Bwahahaha! I suppose it does take some courage.
Nevertheless, I think I may faint from all the exposure to Ser Gaider's glory! Wow!!! (trying not to grovel, trying not to grovel)

A lot of the hate I've seen seems to stem from the annoyance of his fan base (aka us) Not that we're annoying, but there's just those people that just like to run against the grain. "Large fan base? I hate him *grumble grumble grumble*"

I'm actually there with you, Sable, altho I feel like I should dodge a shoe when I say it... DA:O Cullen kinda annoyed me during my initial playthroughs with his running away, bless his awkward little heart. It was DA2 where I really... saw him.Sable Rhapsody wrote...

I'm kind of in the opposite camp, actually. Not when it comes to liking Cullen's character or wanting to see him better developed, but I really did not like DA:O Cullen. Weird dynamics of personal preference--he just really rubbed me the wrong way. I grew to like him in DA2, actually.
But, regardless, it's a sentiment I can appreciate.

LOL That could be. It was actually kinda nice to be reminded of the big brother crazy threads around here,
Anders, et al. That we're not the only passionate fanbase. Of course... it seems like Cullen is just the new whipping boy since there's a better chance of him being in DA3 than say, a mostly dead dude like Anders. Or sorta dead dude like, *sob* Nate.

I thought he was sweet in DA:O, plus it was funny watching him run away. But he became of real interest to me after his torture, and again upon discovering that he was the Knight Captain of the Kirkwall circle and watching his attitude change as the years went by.
Sadly, I still hadn't finished an Amell playthrough at the time, so the connection to the crazy dude in the cage was unfortunately lost on me at the time. He was so cute and awkward... but he ... just... wouldn't... stay ... put. Dammit, Cullen!

Agreed. His bashful-ness was a total "D'aww" moment for me. I guess what sinched it for me was his larger role in DA 2, and the significant change in his demeanor by the end of the game (finally standing up to Meredith).

I agree with you. I thought it was sweet. I laughed so hard when he ran away though..even tried following him just to see what he was doing, lol.
when he blew up at my warden afte his torture I wasn't that upset about it, I understood why he was reacting the way he was. If I had been him (and not in that cage) I probably would have killed anyone who walked into the room.
When he became knight captain of Kirkwall, I did a double take and it took me a few moments to realize it really was him.
