Mharen was the mage Emeric was tracking during First Sacrifice in Act 1. She is described as an older, quiet woman and very loyal to the Circle. Emeric was searching for her out of concern for her welfare, not because she was out of bounds.

That quest, I remember in every detail. Like meanie, I'm a big Emeric fan.

Edit: It seems as if the Ferelden Circle is still granting mages occasional travel passes. If you are a mage and get Verric to lie for you during Act of Mercy, he tells Karras that you are Enchanter Hawke from the Ferelden Circle, sent by Irving to assist in recapturing the Starkhaven mages. I always thought that was a little odd. Why would Varric tell two templars that Hawke was a mage? It isn't as if that's the last either of them will see of him, and by year 3, they must have figured out that Hawke is not in Kirkwall on business or his trip would have ended long before. In my fic, I explain it by saying that Iain forgot to put his staff back in it's sleeve. He uses a canvas longbow cover to conceal it while he's walking around Kirkwall. It isn't always easy finding excuses for the templars' obliviousness, but I do try.

I always wondered why certain mages seemed to get visitors but not others. Maybe because Hawke had returned his family name to a noble status and had helped Cullen out a few times, it granted Hawke's family special privileges to see Bethany?

Also, I'd never read that letter about Aveline properly before. So, if he had removed Aveline from her position as Captain of the Guard, then he would've had to take over her job as well as his own as Knight Captain? Eeesh, the poor guy would've had a mental breakdown (again) from all the extra workload.

But anyway, that explains why in the Legacy DLC Aveline mentions the story Varric was writing about the Knight Captain and the Guard Captain. Obviously he was inspired by Cullen's intervention to help Aveline. Which also explains why Aveline was so interested in Varric's story! She probably formed a little crush on the guy after he put his neck on the line to give her and Hawke the heads up. Bless.

As for that other letter about the apostates, I always found it to be kinda harsh. But, it's his job and it must be frustrating to be portrayed as one of the bad guys etc.

That's what I like about Cullen though, he's a nice guy that's had to do a lot of bad things, some of which he actually agrees with and conflicts with my own ideals. He'd make a good companion/LI for that reason. He's shades of grey (not 50 of them though. Bleugh) and we as the player will have to decide whether we think he's worthy or not based on how he acts around a protagonist he likes/loves and the things we know he's done in the past that we may not agree with.

Sooooo THIS! :D I don't know why people think pointing out that Cullen is VERY pro-templar is supposed to make us not like him. Yes, personally, I believe in freedom for all human beings (unless they are criminals, then they have to serve their time, etc. ofc) so I'm against locking someone up because they were born a certain way (again, violent psychopaths excepted... lock those suckers up lol). But I don't necessarily want companions who agree with my worldview hook, line, and sinker. Cullen's belief system is interesting and should be fun to play with, should he become a companion (which I feel is less and less likely, considering the devs' confusion as to why we like him so much... or are they just trolling us???)

Well who wouldn't form such a crush :D Gee I wonder if Donnic knew about that little story lol I can see Donnic glaring at Cullen one evening at the Hanged Man, Cullen catching the guardsman's look of hatred across the bar and wondering what the heck is going on lol

Charade also asks Hawke in a letter if he's sleeping with Aveline. (I dunno if she asks a FemHawke the same thing, never noticed.) Everyone wants a piece of the guard captain it seems xD

OMG I've never seen this. Do you think it's just for m!Hawke??  Awesome.

Would also love a scene like that with Donnic... ahem! Moto!! Now that your thesis is done, you must have LOTS of writing time on your hands...

I definitely remember that letter to Hawke about Aveline in my first (pro mage) playthrough of the game. Aveline was my best bud in that one, so I was really touched that Cullen wrote to inform me of the situation.

In origins I appreciated his concern for my mage. Obviously I was still figuring out the rules of the circle when I met him, but I really sympathized with the fact that his job put him in an uncomfortable position. Even so, he'd follow through because it was the right thing to do. I mean, after fighting that demon during my harrowing, I certainly wouldn't want it running around loose if I'd failed. The fact that he was completely open about the situation and talks to your mage about it so soon after it happened took a lot of guts. He certainly never gave me the impression of someone who was abusing his authority. In fact, as a player who didn't make him run away, I was happy to have ended on "You can come and talk to me any time you like." Like, cool, I just made a friend.
When I returned for the broken circle quest, I just wanted to help him. I wanted to do for him what I thought he'd have done for my character if the situations had been reversed (and also not having been driven mad by demons and blood mages).

When I encountered him in DA2, I didn't recognize him until I got back to the gallows after Wilmod. At that time I was just excited to see that he hadn't gone crazy and killed a bunch of mages before running off at the end of my origins game. Even though I was pretty entrenched in my mage playthrough, I made every attempt to check up on him when I was in the gallows and was pleasantly surprised to see his character growth over the course of the game. His standing up against Meredith at the end just validated my faith in his character, you know? Kinda the opposite of what happened with Orsino ...

Well, this turned out to be a little longer than intended, but here's hoping for some even more awesome Cullen in the next installment.

Oh yeah, I do don't I :bandit:

But how would I write a fic with Cullen in it and not throw in some sort of pairing.

I was re-reading my own fic the other day and noticed that Cullen was in it... this was written before I came to this thread. Isabela talking about how yummy the knight-captain is... even then I couldn't resist xD

Lol The very first thing I tried to write was a scene between Hawke and Isabela, with Anders and Fenris pairings, and I had Isabela comment on the Knight-Captain as well... LOL Great minds!

I think that's what did it for me. He stood out as an NPC initially because he was good-looking and he had a great VA. Then at the end of the game, when he stands up to Meredith... and at the VERY end when lets Hawke go (mage ending)... possibly one of my favorite scenes in the game.

I was hooked. He's just such a great character.

I need some (presumably mild) curses that the knight-captain would use.

Lol, all those bloody Cullen threads popping up everywhere, surely if people don't want to hear anymore about him then they should stop posting threads complaining about it? I don't understand their logic at all.

:D

On the other hand, I can totally get why people think it's strange if they've only seen his more agressive mandatory scenes. If they perceive it only as Hawke seems strongest and Meredith went crazy, I better change sides ... well I think they're missing a bit of the picture. Some people really enjoy a straightforward story though. They'll still enjoy bioware games without appreciating all the layers and different viewpoints. I still think they may be the ones more likely to complain loudly if they don't like something, though :P That said, if they have explored thoroughly and they still feel that he's super meanie, evil, oppressor-pants, well they can just put one of those twirly mustache banners in their sigs. Everyone Wins!

We need to collect the URLs of the old threads and just post all of these next time one pops up. They even all have the almost identical name.

What's the big deal about Cullen?
Why do fangirls like Cullen?
Why is Cullen so popular?

...egad.

Some of the things he actually says are:

Sweet blood of Andraste.
Maker's breath

Some others he might say:

Andraste’s flaming sword / Andraste’s sword
"For the love of Andraste/the Maker!"
Andraste’s tears
By the Maker
Maker watch over you
Thank the Maker
Maker, yes!/no!
Maker give me strength
Maker preserve us
Flames (Aveline actually says that)

(yes, I have a file... also a forum post)

Well, Maker's Breath is pretty mild. Andraste's Blade, Andraste's Flaming Sword, blood of Andraste ... it's hard to figure what they're equivalent to. Holy Andraste? Holy Maker?

[edit]  See R2s awesome list above, lol.

True, you do learn more about him through searching out every option. Like the little done pro-templar ending, where he can spare the surrendering mages. And then... he still does things that surprise me... like getting super aggro again about  mages with a Hawke that tells him in Best Served Cold to kill all the mages.
