Still, I’d prefer to focus on the positive. There’s a lot of love, and like you said sometimes characters get followings that are rather startling. You expect romance characters to have devotees, but others? Cullen, for instance. I get it to a degree (I rather like his character arc so far, myself), I just don’t tend to think of Cullen actually having enough actual presence in DAO and DA2 to generate the attention he has— but it’s obviously sparked some imaginations. Nathaniel seems to have a bit of a cult following as well— which, considering he was in a rather short expansion and was never a romance, is also a bit surprising.

From recent tumblr post by David Gaider (in response to an ask).

LOL, we like them because they're interesting! I guess that's where the interest stems from, because we know so very little about them but they've had a colourful enough past/story so far to spark our imagination.

Still, I'm glad DG likes Cullen's story arc so far too.

It sucks that people react so negatively to the female characters on their initial reveal, based solely on appearance, but unfortunately that rings true with RL women as well.

Golly, I've been lurking too long again.
I've been on Dragon Age confessions tumblr and holy cow there are a lot of people who hate Cullen and his fans. I've noticed there's more people complaining about Cullen than there are people who like him. It's ridiculous how many people criticize other DA fans for their choices in an RPG.

Someone on YouTube was criticizing this political/entertainment channel I watch (The Young Turks, if you're interested), complaining that many of the male anchors were "normal" looking while all the women were young and hot. (To their credit, all the women are also very intelligent). I replied and said because if "normal" women were hired they would get ripped to shred in YouTube comments, called "fat," "ugly," "w-h-o-r-e," etc. The last thing people would do is listen to what they have to say. (Just as this person wasn't even listening to what these attractive women had to say but was only judging them based on looks.)

Do you guys ever get the feeling from DG's comments that Cullen is pretty much absolutely not going to be a companion? :(

Just a feeling I've been getting lately.

That + not being able to play as an elf + recent comments about our "head canons" not matching the devs' actual canon, specifically suggesting that DA2 LI could return without Hawke and there's nothing we can do about it....

It's all making me feel very sad about DA3 :(

There is just a lot of hate in general on the internet. I used to not stray outside my BL/yaoi anime forum, which was filled with lovely women who never said a cruel word to one another lol then I ventured outside that fandom. I found tumblr and gaming forums like this one and YouTube and other places. People are vicious and nasty and really shocking at times. Trust me, it is not just us Cullen fans. Before I came to this thread, I was shocked by the vitriolic filth that got spewed towards Fenris and HIS fans.

Cullen thread has just been talked about in the BSN a lot lately, so it gets most of the hate nowadays. People who hate Cullen actually talk about him more than WE do, which is partly why (I think) the devs mention him so much lately. We barely bring him up outside this thread....

Yeah, that sounds about right. With the way things are at the moment women are damned if we do and damned if we don't... worst still is that other women are quite happy to join in and slate said female characters/actors/etc based on their looks, when we should be bloody looking out for each other.

As for Cullen being a companion/LI, I'm in two minds. Sometimes I feel like it's a sure thing, but other times I feel like it's probably not going to happen. At the moment i'm swinging towards the idea that he won't be, but my mind changes constantly.

Cullen can't not be a companion, so many people want him as one D: Bioware mostly listens to their fans, like making Garrus from ME a LI. But then again, lots of people complain about him too, so maybe they feel they'll end up losing fans because so many whine and b*tch about him.

And about the "human restricted" PC, that actually pisses me off a bit. I mean, elves and mages are both looked down upon and it's hard for others to see potential in them. Hawke was a human from a noble family who became filthy-freaking-rich in the second act, even if he/she was a mage. Someone like that is easy to see potential in, which bored me.

But if you're an elf or a mage in DA:O then you know, people don't really see you as anything special, and you're essentially saving a country filled with people that hate you. Goes to show that underdogs can rise up to be heroes too-- it's just my opinion though

Take comfort in that.

As Gaider once said to me in here: "I'd be more inclined to use a character that generates both negative and positive reactions, than one that evokes no emotion or reaction at all."

(Or something like that, I forget his exact words lol).

That's true, I just find it so odd that there's so much disapproval and hate over a game that you can make your own choices in and play how you want to. I've seen complaints about damn near everything in Dragon Age, with things as harmless as origin stories and NPCs. People must not have any better way to spend their time other than picking at every little thing they don't like.

Also, why has the Cullen thread been talked about? Did something happen here?

Uh, lol. We're kinda hard to ignore. We've sorta been on a crusade to draw some attention to Cullen, the original idea was that perhaps it would help us stand a tiny chance of getting him as a companion/LI... however we kinda created a monster in the process.

Then Cullen will most likely be a companion in DA3  Still, anything could happen. They might make a LI that's even more irresistible than Cullen, or completely morph him and his personality, there's even a slight chance DA3 will end up as complete crap. Oh well, I'm sure they're going to pull through and satisfy the majority of DA fans

Oh, LOL I should probably pay attention more

Still, what I think a lot of people don't understand is that DA is an RPG, you can CHOOSE to avoid something (most things, anyway), if they don't like it, they can just avoid it. Dear glob.

I totally agree  but in my honest opinion I'd rather not have Cullen as a romance option if they butchered his character achieving it. But I'm certain that won't happen, I've got faith in the devs :B

The thing that makes me think that he won't be a companion in any capacity, is that DG once said that the fans had pretty much head canoned his personality/story/history so much that it would be impossible for them to come up with anything other than what the fans have already decided for him. (Those weren't his precise words, but I can't find the thread he wrote it in).

Now, I don't know if he was refering to the fact that Cullen's fanbase has pretty much covered every possibility that could ever happen to the boy, so there would be no possible way to come up with something new/unexpected that no one has thought up yet. OR if he meant that the fans are so adamant that Cullen's personality and story should play out a certain way, that he feels they'd have to roll with it or risk an almighty sh!t storm.

Either way, I think that our over excitement about his character could be the very thing that ruins our chances. Perhaps we filled in his blank canvas so much that there's no room for maneuver, thus discouraging Gaider's enthusiasm to work on him in a companion/LI role.

I do agree with your dire predictions, but on the other hand, Mr. DG did also say (as you pointed out earlier) that he finds controversial characters like Cullen more interesting to work with than characters whom no one really cares about, one way or the other.

I'm now being swung the other way. I have a feeling Cullen is a companion, and was meant to be one for a long time, since DA3 began development. But his cult following just blew up and shocked the devs. Maybe now they are concerned that they will be seen as pandering to us by non-fans and as not pleasing the fans themselves enough. If, for example, Cullen is not a LI, or if he hasn't developed in the ways we're imagining (learning from his mistakes, etc.).

Reading the confessions tumblr and some people say some really disturbing things about Alistair lol

I stopped reading the DA confessions Tumblr in the end, most of the time it's full of ****** and vinegar.

I'd like to think that he'd been in the pipelines for a companion/LI position since DA2, simply because although he only had a small role in terms of screen time, he still played quite an important part in the fate of things. That being said, I don't wanna get my hopes up because I don't want it to ruin my DA3 experience.

I just wish I knew either way so that I'd be over the disappointment by the time the game is released if he isn't.

This pretty much sums up my feeling. It's been such a rollercoaster of expectation that I just want to know so I can figure out my next fandom step. LOL We joke about what will happen with our little community here if he's not a companion, but... what will happen?

My consistent minimum expectation is that he will be in the game in some capacity, given all the Greg Ellis stuff. For a while now I've been convinced it's just as an NPC, which is still cool ... and means we could still have a thread to discuss. So I suppose for me that's win-win.

I've had an irrational surge of hope recently that he would be a bigger part of the game... and I sorta wish it would go away again. LOL
