I just read some of that thread, one particular post sums up my thoughts on Cullen perfectly:
"The thing that makes me so interested in Cullen is that he seems fundamentally incapable of prioritising his own happiness over what he sees as the greater good. Even if his perception of duty and the greater good are somewhat skewed, there's a nobility there that makes me want to reach out to him."
THIS is exactly what drew my attention to Cullen in the first place. We've not had a companion in either Dragon Age game that has put aside their own happiness to such an extent that you can physically see them suffering for it as a result, he is completely unselfish to the point where I think he feels like he doesn't deserve to be happy or have something to call his own. He's punishing himself for having wants and desires that he doesn't feel worthy of.
I get pretty annoyed when people presume we like him because he has that "creepy possessive stalker" vibe... Trust me, I have no interest in men like that, having dated one or two and been stalked for several years when I was younger.
