I don't see how people can stay ignorant to their surroundings and what's going on in the world/universe. I think some people would be shocked as to what they would find.

LOL It's true that most folks don't pay much attention to the natural world around them anymore, leading to, for example,  large fractions of college graduates being unable to explain why the seasons happen. But, erm, extra planets or sneaky stars slipping into our solar system are the sorts of things carefully monitored by professional astronomers. There are things we don't know about about rogue planets in our (relative) vicinity... but they're small and distant and would never be visible with the naked eye (or iphone camera). Physics is a wonderful thing. :P

But, I'll take off my astronomer hat now and agree with Cullen that the Maker has created a nicely ordered and understandable world. What is the blood magic?? ;)

I find that kinda thing fascinating. Truth is, there is so much we don't know. Too much, really. What ticks me off is that there are so many opportunists and con artists that make it difficult to question and get at any real truth. That make the ones that do question look silly. Which is unfair to all of us.

But the ideas that intrigue me the most are the ones I beat up the most. Test and retest looking for weak spots in the arguments. If they survive the mental barrage...I consider them more carefully. lol. I am not an easy mistress.

As Cullen will tell you! Hopefully. With my mage PC. hee, hee. I have a question. How long during DA2 production b4 they told us abt the PC?

I need to know something abt the PC. Truth is, we don;t really know that it's an Inquisitor. I'm pretty sure it is, but pretty sure doesn't count. Things can change.

How long did it take last time to get basic info on the PC. And how they played into the game world? Their position in it?

DA2 was finished and on the shelves in little over a year, so we found out the basic details fairly quickly (or so i'm told).

I'm presuming that our new PC will be an Inquisitor too, but I'm hoping that we'll start off as just a normal person who gets thrown into the role of Inquisitor, rather than having to start the game with the title already handed to us. That's the only thing that concerned me about the survey leak, because in the German version it said:

"It is up to you how you lead the Inquisition. But you'll have to take lead from the beginning"

If the survey leak is legit, then it makes me wonder if we'll have to watch a bunch of cinematic opening cutscenes of our protagonist going about his/her duties before finally taking control of our character the minute he/she is thrown into the role of Inquisitor, rather than having a playable prologue in which we get to experience his/her life/situation (whatever that may be) prior to sh!t hitting the fan.

Maybe the whole first story beat is setting you up to be the Inquisitor, so something around the length of DA:O's origins that then sets you up to go out into the world and inquisit. I wonder if the emphasis on "from the beginning" is supposed to telegraph that your main goal for the whole game will be leading the Inquisition, as opposed to erm, rising to power at the end of the game or becoming Champion only halfway through the game.

In DAO we were pretty much a nobody that was thrown into becoming a warden by circumstance. DA2--a nobody thrown into becoming Champ by circumstance. I can't imagine starting the game as an Inquisitor. More being thrown into the sitch by circumstance.

But wat's funny is who the heck are we to take on such a mantle. Esp if it's at the beginning. I don't see any of the orgs just trusting some moron off the street to renew and lead such an order. To look into such things. Even if shyte is hitting the fan. maybe esp if shyte is hitting the fan.

The PC could be anybody, a spy. A loon. And the orgs would just trust them? No. that's makes no sense.

I guess we'll start the game just put into that position. With sum bit background on how we got there...

Or we just start our own secret club and BS our way thru. "Yes, Templar, I have the authority to question you." We flash our fake Inquisitor badge, then quickly put it away. Harrumph, and all that.

I really can't figure how they're approaching this. Especially without it seeming illogical, or high handed. idk

Unless it's a case of mistaken identity?

Like, maybe our protagonist happens to be at the "peace gathering" for whatever reason (perhaps our reason for being there is something we can choose via dialogue with a temporary companion), then suddenly the magical blast happens and in the confusion we get mistaken for someone of importance. Thus thrusting us into the title of "Inquisitor".

First off I want to note that I loled IRL at that Templar bit :P. If I were going to guess I would say that we become a Inquisitor rather than THE Inquisitor and then after that beggining mission something decimates the whole of the Inquisition leaving you to pick up the pieces and sort of duck tape it back together opening up the possibility for you to shape it however you want and essentially eliminate your ties to the Chantry if there are any to begin with.

With the leadership gone or out of direct contact you sort of pull a Revan where even though you're not officially leading the mission, you're not the highest ranking member (Bastila) you sort of become the de-facto commander due to your being the strongest in the party.

edit: in regards to the mistaken identity idea :
Perhaps...I could see that. Destiny thrust upon you. It does like to have its way with you.

Although, I still like the secret club thing BS'ing our way thru. That's how we'll get Cullen in our party. "Cullen, you are to come assist us w/this task...uh, by order of the...uh, Divine. Yeah, that's it."

Then half way, or 3/4 of the game later he finds out we were lying the whole time.

And dannyboy--that seems most probable. that's what happened w/the Warden.

Well, that's kinda where the BSing would come in, because you've been thrust into this position where it's a case of mistaken identity, but you end up playing along, carrying on the fascade for whatever reason (maybe if we have the option of being a thief/con-artist as a background then your character would play along in order to avoid arrest or whatever), or perhaps you're playing as a Mage extremist who decides to use this case of mistaken identity as leverage to help swing things in the Mage rebellion's favour etc (your reasons for keeping up the initial fascade being different, depending on your background and the way in which choose to play etc).

That's pretty much the only thing I can think of as to why a complete unknown would be thrown into the position of Inquisitor. Especially as the leak (if legit) states that the Inquisition isn't formed until after the magical blast decimates the Chantry leadership. Perhaps our protagonist stumbles upon/steals an item/important document from the body of the "important person" and that's how we get mistaken as the new Inquisitor? Or maybe the dying man/woman gives us said item as he/she lays dying in the rubble during the blast and tells us to take it to whoevers in charge and that's how the mistaken identity occurs?

I can imagine DA3 taking a leaf out of ME1's book by letting us set our background in the CC and then the game starting after the magical blast, in which we're already part of the Inquisition. During which we would do a couple of little quests for the head Inquisitor (which would serve as our tutorial), then something bad would happen that would cause us to have to take over as the head Inquisitor or something (kinda like how Shep took over from Anderson etc).

It could be like how Hawke didn't become Champion until Act 3, too. Maybe we don't become Head Inquisitor for quite some time....

I hadn't thought of that!

Like, perhaps for the most part we're the Inquisitor's right hand man, so we'd have to do all the crappy difficult tasks and take charge whilst the head Inquisitor deals with other stuff, especially if he/she is too old to do all the leg work.

although that would contradict the line you quoted from the German survey leak:
"It is up to you how you lead the Inquisition. But you'll have to take lead from the beginning"

of course, who knows it's that's even correct.

Good point.

If it's legit and assuming we start off as a nobody, then the only two ideas I can think of that doesn't seem too far fetched is the whole case of mistaken identity thing. OR the protagonist saving the Divine/super important persons life thus making us the leader of the Inquisition.

Or maybe we aren't a member of the Inquisition at all. I'm still hanging on to that hope.

Lol, there is that.

If we are then I'll certainly be interested to see how they handle that. Which reminds me of a tweet Mark Darrah made a few weeks ago that intrigued me:

"#DA3 will not force you to be proTemplar. Inquisition and the Templars are not the same. Though they are related. #inAWay"

I don't know if that's him confirming things or just trolling.

We have also been reassured that we will not be forced to work for the Chantry, nor will we be required to play Andrastian characters, or to profess belief in the Maker except as inconsequential idioms like "Maker's breath" after being startled, which would make it tough to play *any* kind of religious persona (except voluntarily, of course).

Keep in mind that other titles from that survey were "Inquisitor" and "Exarch". An exarch is a governor, pretty much, and it has been hinted strongly that we could be getting a castle. Maybe they included some stuff from the planned expansion, since Hawke could have been viscount. Or maybe it's something else entirely.

It isn't unheard of to name games after the ultimate opponent, either. If they called the game Dragon Age: Rein of Terror, would people expect the game to feature an evil protagonist? Maybe we'll be fighting the Inquisition, not participating in it.

Even if the survey was legit, we don't know the date of it. If it came out back in March 2011 when they were first starting to bat around ideas for the next game, a lot could have changed since then.

I found an interview with Greg Ellis at the Cars 2 premier on YT but I assume everyone's seen it so didn't post it...

FYI I just felt I should share with everyone that I got a job 8DDDDDDDD We are negotiating salary right now 8D

I don't want to be (or start out as, at least) the head or governor of anything. That means we could have to start out as some grizzled old-timer. Which isn't my cup of tea... though I know for some it might be refreshing to play a 30+ PC.

^ Also wanted to add the caveat that I myself am 32 so I am not suggesting that 30+ is "grizzled" and old LOL

If we did become the governor of anything, I doubt we'd start that way.

BioWare (and most RPGs) tend toward a "hero's journey" kind of story that follows the protagonist through his or her rise to greatness. The Bhaalspawn started in Candlekeep and went on to defeat Sarevok (and later Irenicus and the disciple of the dead God of Murder). The Warden began as a humble princeling/gutter rat/elf/knife-ear/apprentice mage/pup and went on to become the Hero of Ferelden. Hawke began as a farmer and went on to become Champion of Kirkwall.

Whatever our protagonist becomes, he or she will not start at the top.
